As we celebrate National Scrapbooking Month, why not combine the vacation vibes of the Postcard Perfect paper packet with the endless possibilities available with our Cricut® collections and Cricut Design Space™? Using the variety of banners in the Artistry Cricut® collection, you can cut personalized text using the Slice tool. This gives you unlimited flexibility to create titles for your scrapbook pages that perfectly capture what you love about your photos and memories.
We made this scrapbook page by slicing text in a banner image from the Artistry Cricut® collection. This allowed us to create a unique title to match the sunny, happy moment captured in this family vacation photo. Today we are going to give you step-by-step instructions to create a banner title just like the one you see here using a banner, font, and the Slice tool in Design Space™.
Before getting started, make sure you own the Artistry and You Are Here Cricut® collections to use the same banner and font that we did in this project. You will also need a Cricut® machine that is Design Space™ compatible (any of the Explore models or the new Maker) to link your collections to your account. (If you do not know how to do this, click here.)
The steps below show how to work in Design Space™ from a desktop or laptop computer. If you use the app on a mobile device, the buttons and tools will be located in slightly different places on your screen, but the same features are available on any device.
1. Sign in to Cricut Design Space™ at design.cricut.com.
Log in with your Cricut ID and password, and then select the green New Project button in the top right corner.
2. Insert the banner image.
To add the banner from the Artistry collection to your canvas, click Images on the left side of your screen. Then, search for image #M418562 in the search box at the top. This is the exact banner you need to recreate our example. Just select it and click Insert Images in the bottom right corner to add it to your canvas.
3. Resize and ungroup the banner image.
After inserting the banner, adjust the size to make it slightly larger for the scrapbook page. Change the height, only, to 3.5″. Design Space™ automatically resizes the width to the correct proportions as long as the lock icon above the size is locked. Then, ungroup the banner by selecting the image and clicking UnGroup in the Layers panel in the top right. This will leave one solid banner and one outline banner.
4. Duplicate the solid banner.
To create this banner title, you will need three separate pieces: one solid image for the bottom, a second solid image to slice the title, and the third outline image. To create a second solid banner, duplicate the image by selecting it and then clicking Duplicate in the Layers panel.
5. Insert first line of text, “LET THE,” and resize.
To slice the title, you have to work with each line of text individually. To add the first line, click on the Text icon on the left side of your screen. Then click Fonts in the Text Edit bar and search in the search box for “You Are Here.” Select the font, type your text, and then resize the font height in the Text Edit bar to 0.5″.
6. Move and rotate the text over the banner.
Move the text over the banner and rotate the text by clicking the arrow on the top right corner of the image.
7. Check text placement before slicing.
Before slicing your first line of text in the banner, you can check the placement of the text by moving the banner outline image over the solid one with the text. Select the banner outline, and then click Arrange in the Tools panel. Select Move To Front to make sure the outline will move over the top of the solid piece, rather than behind it. If your text needs to be adjusted, move or rotate as needed, and then check placement again.
8. Use Slice to cut text into the banner.
To cut the text into the banner, click and drag your mouse over the banner and text to highlight both images. This will allow the Slice option to become available in the bottom right corner. Then, click Slice.
9. Delete extra text.
When you slice text into an image, you’ll have two lines of text remaining, one that you used to slice and then a duplicate line of text that was sliced out of the solid banner. Both lines of text can be deleted by selecting the text and clicking the red x.
10. Repeat with second line of text, “SUNSHINE IN.”
Repeat the same process to slice the second line of text for “SUNSHINE IN” on the banner to complete your title. Keep in mind, if you feel like the text is too tight on the banner, you can adjust the height to make it slightly smaller.
11. Cut your project!
For our page, we used our Lagoon and Lemon cardstock. Keep in mind our cardstock is two-toned. One side has the full strength color, and the other side is a lighter hue. Use the light side of Lagoon for the banner with text and the dark side of Lagoon for the banner outline. If you like, you can also assign colors to your project pieces before cutting the project. This makes it easy to see what cardstock to use as you cut. When you’re ready, click the green Make It button in the top right corner and follow the prompts. Then, insert your cardstock, and you’ll have all the pieces you need to create this project on your own!
You can use this same process to create your own titles from banners found in the Artistry collection. With so many options, you can customize your titles to match any scrapbooking project!
