It’s that time of year again, when we are getting all of the feels as we prepare to part ways with our Annual Inspirations catalog on September 1 and make way for a new Holiday Expressions idea book. We are so excited for the launch of the brand new catalog, filled to the brim with amazing new tools and products, and at the same time, we’re getting a little misty-eyed over having to say goodbye to others.

Creating Scrapbook Pages with Unity and Variety

Unity and variety are two of the most fundamental principles of design. When used correctly, these two principles complement each other and result in artwork that looks just right, complete, and pleasing.

Unity happens when the parts of a scrapbook page or layout (or any kind of art) work together to be seen as a whole. It’s difficult to specify exactly how to achieve it because unity is an impression of the person that is making the observation. It is a feeling that is conveyed to the viewer of the art. And because we’re unique, each of us with our own perspective, it comes down to who you are making your art for.

With all that said, there are a couple of tips that have proven time and time again to result in artwork that looks unified to pretty much everyone.

Unity and Variety #ctmh #closetomyheart #unity #variety #harmony #artprinciples #designprinciples #ctmhdocumented #bashful #ctmhcentralpark #thincuts #stichedhearts

The first tip will sound fairly obvious: greater unity can be achieved by reducing diversity! In this instance, we specifically mean reducing how much diversity you employ in each of the main elements of design (shape, color, lines, texture, space, value, and form). In our example above, you can see that we kept to just a handful of colors and basic shapes, most of them created by straight lines. Because the various elements of the page share many attributes, there is less diversity and greater unity.

Our second tip to building unity in scrapbooking is the use of repetition. Looking at our example again, what repetition do you see? Let us know what you find in the comments below. (Hint: there is so much more than just the square shapes! 🙂 )

This leads us to the second principle of design we are discussing today. To create pages that are visually interesting and exciting, you have to have variety in your art.

Variety occurs when you use differences and change on your pages to increase visual interest.

The scrapbook page we are sharing with you today is made up of 12 3″ x 3″ squares. This works well in this instance because of the variety in the patterns, colors, and photos. The elements need to be alike enough so we can see that they belong together and at the same time different enough to be interesting (harmony).

The principles of art are tried and true methods for organizing the elements of your art. When all of the pieces work together, the result is harmonious! Make an effort to strike a good balance between unity and variety on your scrapbook pages so that your albums will be brimming with enjoyable works of art! Keep following us on the blog to learn more!

Journaling in Cricut Design Space™

Did you know that you can use fonts in Cricut Design Space™ for more than just a title on your scrapbook page? In this next installment of our Design Space tutorials, we are going to show you how to use Design Space to create large journaling spaces for your scrapbook pages. Not only can the words of your story be the main feature on your page, it can also be made using your Cricut® machine and your favorite Design Space font.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling #centralpark #ctmhcentralparkAs you can see in this scrapbook page, you can type a large amount of text in Design Space for your journaling. With the Align and Slice tools, you can then easily cut that text out of cardstock and add it to your page.

To replicate our font you will need to use the Cricut® Artistry collection. You will also need a Cricut® machine that is Design Space compatible (any of the Explore models or the new Maker) to link your collections to your account. (If you do not know how to do this, click here.)

The steps below show you how to work in Design Space from a desktop or laptop computer. If you use the app on a mobile device, the buttons and tools will be located in slightly different places on your screen, but the same features are available on any device.

1. Sign in to Cricut Design Space™ at design.cricut.com.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

Log in with your Cricut ID and password, and then select the green New Project button in the top right corner.

2. Insert and resize a basic square shape.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

To make the base for your journaling, you will first insert a square by clicking on Shapes on the left side of your screen. Then add a square to your canvas. Next, resize this square to an 8.5″ x 11.5″ rectangle. Don’t forget to click the lock icon to unlock the size and change the width to 8.5 and the height to 11.5.

3. Color the rectangle.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

This is an easy, optional, step just to help you better see the text as you are journaling and then using the Slice tool later on. Since we wanted to use Bashful cardstock on this project, we went ahead and adjusted the color of the rectangle from dark gray to light pink. Click on the colored circle next to the scissors icon in the Layers panel to adjust the color of the shape.

4. Insert a line of text.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

To start your journaling, click Text and then search for the Artistry font in the search box. Once you’ve selected it, type your first line of text.

5. Resize the text.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

You’ll notice when you type your first line of journaling that the text is too large for your rectangle base. Resize the text to a height of 0.45″. You can do this by changing the height in the size box to 0.45. Make sure to leave the lock icon locked this time so that the width is automatically resized in Design Space.

6. Insert additional lines.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

Continue adding lines of text for your journaling. To do this quickly, simply duplicate a line of text. This way you don’t have to go back in and resize the font. Click the previous line, select Duplicate in the top right corner, and then type a new line of text.

7. Arrange lines of text.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

After you have completed your journaling, it’s time to arrange the lines on the base rectangle. For this page, we decided to arrange the majority of the text from the top down, leaving a space to add a photo and embellishments before the last two lines of text at the bottom. To help with spacing, you can insert other Basic Shapes, like we did here. You can insert and resize a square to give you an idea of where your photo will go or a circle to represent an embellishment piece. Don’t worry about perfectly spacing each line of text. Design Space has a helpful tool that we will use in the next step.

8. Use the Align tool to evenly space the lines of text.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

Once you have your lines loosely arranged how you like on the rectangle, select the rectangle and move it to the side. Then click and drag your mouse over all the top lines of text to highlight all of them at once. Select Align and then select Distribute Vertically. This will evenly space your lines, and the in the Align tool again, select Center Horizontally. This will center the text. You can also center horizontally the last two lines on the bottom. Because there are only two lines, the option to distribute vertically won’t be available.

9. Use the Slice tool to slice your journaling into the base rectangle.

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

To slice the journaling into your rectangle, you have to work line by line. Place the rectangle behind your text. Then select the top line, hit the shift button on your keyboard, and select the rectangle. This will allow the Slice tool to become available in the bottom right corner. Just select Slice and your text will be cut into the rectangle. After slicing, you’ll have two extra lines of text. Delete both extra lines by selecting the red X. To see the remaining lines of text, select Arrange and then Move to Back. Continue this process for each line of text.

10. Cut your project and assemble your page!

Journaling with Cricut #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricutcollection #artistry #cricutartistrycollection #cricutartistry #journaling #cricutjournaling

When you’re ready, click the green Make It button in the top right corner and follow the prompts. Your Cricut® machine will do the rest of the work for you and cut this journaling centerpiece for your scrapbook page!

We hope you love this creative option for adding journaling to your layouts using Design Space. Often the journaling is something we add once our scrapbook page is complete, but with Design Space, you can turn your journaling into a main feature of the page. There are so many options for filling your page with text when you use Design Space!

Tools Every Stamper Should Have

Stamping Tools #ctmh #closetomyheart #MyAcrylix® #stamping #acrylicstamp #MyAcrylix #stampset #acrylicblock #inkpad #stamppad #ExclusiveInks™ #spritzcleaner #stampscrubber

Stamping runs through our veins here at Close To My Heart and we just can’t get enough of it! For those who are new to stamping or maybe just new to our product line, we wanted to share some of the basics that will make stamping with Close To My Heart your new favorite!

My Acrylix® Stamp Sets

The very first thing that you need is a good quality stamp. There’s no getting around this one. You want stamp sets that will stand the test of time in both structure and design. (Some have had to learn the hard way, not all clear stamp sets are created equal. 🙂 )

Stamping Tools #ctmh #closetomyheart #MyAcrylix® #stamping #acrylicstamp #MyAcrylix #stampset #acrylicblock #inkpad #stamppad #ExclusiveInks™ #spritzcleaner #stampscrubber

At Close To My Heart we put a lot of thought and effort into making the best stamps for our customers. The process begins about nine months to a year before a stamp set is even available for purchase. From trend and customer preference research all the way through the final label placed on the packaging, there isn’t a detail left unturned.

All of our My Acrylix® stamps are made of a liquid photo polymer resin. (What does that mean?) They are a clear, rubbery, very high quality material that creates clean and crisp prints time and time again. They are also flexible! Because they come packaged on a carrier sheet and are not permanently mounted on a block, you can manipulate them to fit inside shapes and banners, or simply to achieve a slightly different look than the original. (Some people will go as far as cutting their polymer stamps in order to rearrange words and sentiments!)

My Acrylix® Blocks

We mentioned earlier that our stamps are not permanently mounted on blocks, and if you watched the video above you can see what a world of difference that makes.

Once you have your stamp sets, you will need blocks to use them. Our My Acrylix® blocks are your best bet!

Stamping Tools #ctmh #closetomyheart #MyAcrylix® #stamping #acrylicstamp #MyAcrylix #stampset #acrylicblock #inkpad #stamppad #ExclusiveInks™ #spritzcleaner #stampscrubber

All of our My Acrylix® blocks have a small white horizontal line on them to help with stamp alignment, which is especially helpful to keep words and borders straight. Their crystal clear acrylic design not only lets you see where you are stamping but it is also hard and sturdy, making them very durable and difficult to break. With rounded edges providing a safe and comfortable grip, be prepared for hours of stamping fun!

Design Principles: Rhythm & Movement

Many of us scrapbook with storytelling as our primary goal. Preserving stories is the main factor we keep in mind as we design pages, layouts, and albums. The story is what guides our photo placement and the order of events. Sometimes, we even go as far as labeling parts of our pages to help the viewer follow a specific path through our stories.

Today we’re going to discuss two design principles that will help your artwork do some of the storytelling for you. These two principles work together to organize different elements within your artwork in order to create a natural visual flow.

Rhythm is something that catches the viewer’s eye and continues to move it through the artwork. It is created through slight differences in a pattern and repetition of elements, and, just like in music, it can vary in pace depending on how heavy your patterns are and how often they repeat. Movement is the path that your eye takes through the art.

Can you spot the rhythm causing elements in our example scrapbook page above? There are several, so let’s talk through a few of them. First, take a look at those colorful pennant banners. There are two, both made up of equal-sized triangles and the same color scheme. As a pair, these two banners catch our eye and move our attention from the top left of the page to the center. Even each banner has its own rhythm because of the repetitive triangle shape.

A second place we find rhythm in this piece is in the cluster of squares and rectangles made up of the two small photos, the white rectangle behind the lower banner, and the small journaling card.

They are all similar enough in shape and size to consider them a repetitive pattern. This rhythm generates a sense of movement in the lower middle section of the page.

A third, subtle, way we created movement in our example is through the repetitive use of blue sequins.

We started out at the top left, moved to the middle, then across to the bottom right. Another place we see rhythm and movement in this one page is with the color yellow. From the banners, to the photos, and the paint washes, there are small accents of yellow carrying our attention from one place to the next.

These are just a few of the many ways rhythm is creating movement in this example piece. Now that you know what to look for, can you spot any more?

Most of you reading this blog naturally look at things from left to right, top to bottom. It’s how we’ve been trained to read the world around us. To keep with this natural rhythm we’ve all been subconsciously taught, keep it in mind as you create your artwork so that the finished product will look and feel pleasing to you and your audience. In the following two-page layout we use lines, shapes, color, and space to create rhythm and movement from one page to the other, following a left to right, top to bottom flow.

In the left page, where we will always know to begin, we are first drawn to the title for several reasons. One of which is because it is framed with yellow lines and accents.

From this highlighted title, the yellow rhythm continues to the surfboard in the 4 x 6 photo and then from one cluster of embellishments to the next until we reach the end (or right side) of the second page. Also creating rhythm and visually moving us along from left to right are the blue lines, blue photo mats, and blue arrow.

Creating rhythm and movement in artwork will take practice and patience to master. The first step in the process is to know that it is there. Make note of it in other people’s art and learn from it. Take what you see (and like) and incorporate it into your artwork as best you can. With practice it will eventually become second nature and you will be visually guiding others through your artwork and your stories intentionally and with purpose.
