Stamping ABC’s

Here we are, in the middle of Stampaganaza 2017, with more stamping tips and tricks for you to carry up your sleeve and share with your friends! Today we’re giving you the ABC’s of working with alphabet stamps. Most of us have at least one font that is our go to, so go grab it and try the following out! (If you’re looking for a new favorite, check out our new Storybook Alphabet—July Stamp of the Month!)
Counting Sheep #closetomyheart #ctmh #layout #countingsheep #sleeping #alphabetstamp #alphabet #scrapbooking
A is for Alignment
For our first trick, we will tell you to stamp your letters one at a time instead of spelling out entire words on a stamping block. A lot of people do this (and we do too, sometimes!) but we find it easier to pull off crisper and cleaner letters when they are stamped individually. If you’re afraid that your letters won’t line up straight, use a ruler and a pencil to lightly draw a line to act as a guide for where you will be stamping. As for spacing between the letters, just eyeball it! Artists are definitely not perfectionists!
Love Card #closetomyheart #ctmh #cardmaking #lovecard #love #alphabetstamp #stampingB is for Background
Never underestimate the power of a strong backdrop! Alphabet stamps make great backgrounds and can send subtle messages through artwork. Align your letters using the tips we’ve already mentioned, but throw them in the back for a fun and easy way to personalize your crafts.
Gift Tag #closetomyheart #ctmh #tag #alphabet #alphabetstamp #stampingC is for Center (Sorry Cookie Monster, maybe next time)
Our final tip is about centering your words in your artwork without having to pull out a ruler. If you are trying to center a word on a piece of paper, like in our Hello tag above, start stamping from the middle letter of the word. We started with the first L in “HELLO” and then worked our way out from there, playfully staggering the letters slightly up and down.

Remember your ABC’s—they can make a world of difference when you stamp! If you’ve got some alphabet tips of your own that you would like to share, please do so in the comments below!

Feeling Cornered by Chronology?

Do you suffer from acute chronological scrapbook syndrome? You’re not alone.

Thousands like you have been printing photos and storing them away in shoeboxes for decades, assuring themselves that one day they’ll feel more motivated to scrapbook everything in the perfect order.

Full of good intentions, but dreading the task of organizing every photo, victims of this syndrome often find their passion tainted by a nagging voice that tells them they must start at the beginning (wherever that is) or not start at all.

It’s time to silence that voice and get back to doing what we love!

It may seem revolutionary, but scrapbooks don’t have to be done in chronological order. Remember that these memories are your stories, so you get to tell them however you wish. The only way you’re doing it “wrong” is if the method you’ve chosen feels like a task rather than a delight.

Free yourself and your creativity by trying these organizational methods of scrapbooking instead:

Life Milestones

Milestones happen at every stage of life. Create an album that showcases a variety of milestones from the lives of each family member. Pick a certain milestone and focus on that, or gather a bunch on one layout. You can include things like graduations, church ceremonies, losing teeth, getting married, the first day of a new job, or learning to walk. This is a fun way to show your family’s progress over time.

Classic Family Memories

Ideas for organizing your scrapbook albums #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapping #scrapbooking #familymemories #familyfun #family #cruiseHave a favorite memory that everyone in the family loves to talk about? Get it on paper. When your family comes over for Sunday dinner and starts to reminisce, write down the extra details they add to your story. Better yet, ask them to write their own version of the family memory. Include everyone’s version of the story as journaling on your layout. Even if you have no idea where the photos of that specific memory are, just start taking the first steps. You’ll find the photos in that notorious shoebox soon enough.

Someone You Love

Pick a person who’s important to you and create an album that’s all about them. The photos can come from any time or event. The important part is simply that they get remembered. This album will become something they will cherish for always.

Color Schemes

This artsy method is more wild and crazy, but definitely a lot of fun—and excellent for a creative boost! Choose photos and papers based on the similarity of their color schemes and then put them all on one page. Find out how fun it can be to see a collection of unrelated memories on one layout!

Random Reminiscing

Reach into that pile of photos and pull out a few. Scrapbook them any way you wish, whether that’s together on one page or each on their own layout. As you finish each layout, simply place them in your album in any order at all. This method is a lot of fun to look through afterward because you’ll always be surprised by which memory pops up next.

Purposeful Prompts

Ideas for organizing your scrapbook albums #ctmh #closetomyheart #readinglayout #scrapping #scrapbooking #readingscrapbook #readingType a list of prompts (e.g. your favorite words, themes, questions you think your posterity will ask about you), trim them into strips, and place them in a jar. Draw a new one every time you sit down to scrapbook. Whatever kind of information that prompt inspires you to document, do it!

It’s the Little Things

In addition to the big events of life, be sure to also emphasize the daily things that make you and your family who you are. Stepping outside of big events will paint a more realistic picture of your life as well as add some variety to your albums.

Likes & Dislikes

Focus on a person’s likes or dislikes, not worrying about their age or location at the time you took the photos. An overarching theme like this really helps to reveal who a person is in just a layout or two.

Favorite Activities

Ideas for organizing your scrapbook albums #scrapping #scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #hikescrapbook

What activity does your family love to do? Find pictures of yourselves doing that activity across any number of years and group them together. Say you like to vacation together; make a layout just for vacations. They don’t even have to be from the same trip—just get the theme put into one place.

How do you feel now? Empowered? Liberated? Excited? The only thing to make this moment sweeter would be for us to remind you that the albums you’ll need to keep your long-awaited layouts safe in are available at a great deal this month. Take advantage of our We’ve Got You Covered! campaign, where you buy one album and get a second at 50%-off, to get your gorgeous, non-chronological layouts archived and on display. You only have a few days left to take advantage of this promotion. Your memories have waited a long time for this; now let them shine!

Make Room for the Whole Story

It is so incredibly easy, nowadays, to take pictures of pretty much every moment in our lives. However, when you want to preserve some of these moments, how often do you find yourself overwhelmed with having to choose which pictures out of the hundreds you actually took deserve the space in your scrapbook?

The good news is that you don’t have to be limited by a 12″ x 12″ page anymore! With a little help from our Pocket Plus™ Memory Protectors™, you can easily add as many as 12 more photos to your story with just one protector. Check out our layouts below for ideas on how to include more of your favorites without compromising the beauty of your pages.2 Page Scrapbooking Layout #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #flowerlayout #scrapbooking #scrapbook #girlscrapbook #flowerpaper #littlegirlLayout with Pocket Plus Memory Protectors #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #pictureperfect #littlegirl #scrapbooking #scrapbook #flowerpaper #pocketplus #memoryprotectorsThe top image of this gorgeous layout shows you the original, while the bottom shows the same layout with the addition of two 6″ wide Pocket Plus Memory Protectors. We were able to add several more photos to this layout and still keep it neat and engaging. Pretty amazing, right?

The trick to using these protectors is to design your pages with the additional photos in mind. When working with the 6″ protectors, plan the coordinating pages in halves. That way, when you lay either of the protectors on top, they create a secondary “page” using half of the art from the original.2 Page Scrapbooking Layout #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #flowerlayout #scrapbooking #scrapbook #girlscrapbook #flowerpaper #littlegirlLayout with Pocket Plus Memory Protectors #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #pictureperfect #littlegirl #scrapbooking #scrapbook #flowerpaper #pocketplus #memoryprotectorsHere’s another beautiful example using our 4″ wide protectors, which only cover up one-third of the original pages. Starting at the gutter, measure 4″ into your page and consider that as the space, from top to bottom, the protector will cover with the additional art.

Don’t forget, these protectors have backsides, too! Since you can flip the protectors back and forth, you have that many more options for photos, journaling, or even pocket cards (AND you have a fun, interactive element for your layout!).

We love taking pictures of the special moments and people in our lives, and when you use our Pocket Plus Memory Protectors, you can share so much more of them and their stories in your scrapbooks!

Do you have any layouts you’re working on that could use a little help from these protectors? We love to hear from you, so tell us all about it!

Do-It-Yourself with the Cricut® Flower Market Collection

Spring is in full bloom and you’re itching for some new décor. Flowers and wreaths…designs that look bright, open, and airy… Instead of picking something up at the store, give your do-it-yourself prowess a try!Framed Monogram Wreath #ctmh #closetomyheart #monogram #wreath #neutral #diy #decor #Cricut #flowermarket #flower #rawwood #distressed #weathered #shabbychic #modernantique #antiquedThe framed monogram wreath we’re displaying today was made using our Cricut® Flower Market collection—ideal for springtime crafts! We set our wreath in a shadow box, but make your arrangement to suit your style and your space. Once you start working with the Flower Market collection, you might just find yourself branching out in your own direction! Instead of a wreath like ours, you might end up with a bouquet, or a smaller floral project. That’s the best part of DIY décor and our Cricut® collections—everything you make is customizable to your needs and liking! Choose how far your creativity will take you and start trimming with flowers that will last all season!

Before getting started, you have to select your colors. We chose neutral hues for our example décor to make it easy to add to any existing scheme. As you’re planning your project, also consider that using light and neutral color palettes can brighten up a room, making it feel more open and less cluttered.Wreath Up Close #ctmh #closetomyheart #wreath #monogrammedwreath #monogramwreath #monogram #neutral #antiqued #modernantique #shabbychic #distressed #distressingtechnique #diyOur wreath petals were made using White Daisy cardstock, our Champagne Exclusive Inks™ stamp pad, and a sponge.

If you’re a fan of the modern shabby chic style, we have a simple paper distressing technique that you have to try! Cut a small triangle out of your round sponge, ink it, and then dab off the excess ink on scrap paper (you want very little ink on your sponge). Now that your sponge is ready to go, rub the edges of the paper you are looking to distress and—ta-da!—you have paper leaves that are “weathered” and very chic!

DIY décor is definitely the way to go this spring and the Cricut® Flower Market collection is just bursting with ideas! Check out our Flower Market videos on YouTube for additional home décor suggestions and inspiration. Give them a try, experiment, and create wonderful things!
