Playing with Texture Paste

We’ve been having some fun with texture paste recently, and we wanted to show you how you can too!

Texture Paste #closetomyheart #ctmh #texturepaste #mixedmedia #cardmaking #scrapbooking #papercrafting

With three unique finishes—opaque matte, transparent matte, and transparent gloss—texture paste is a great way to add some three-dimensional flair to any project. Texture paste is extremely versatile and can be used on most surfaces to create, you guessed it, texture! From your gorgeous scrapbook layouts to a beautiful handmade card, texture paste is just what you need to set your crafts apart. We can’t wait to share these awesome ideas with you, so grab your texture paste and get ready for a crafting experience like no other! (Some of the effects are a little harder to see in photos, but we promise, they really pop in person!) 🙂

Texture Paste #closetomyheart #ctmh #texturepaste #mixedmedia #cardmaking #scrapbooking #papercrafting

Texture paste is quick and easy to apply, although you will need to allow ample time for it to dry. There are a few different ways to apply texture paste; one of the quickest and easiest is to use a palette knife or other spreading tool to freehand smear it onto the surface of your paper, or whatever material you plan to use. (Imagine you’re buttering a nice, hot piece of toast!) By using the palette knife, you can easily control the thickness and resulting appearance of the paste.

Tip: If you want a smoother finish, be sure to use a steady hand as you apply the paste. For an impasto effect, you can apply the paste with patting or even gentle slapping motions.

Texture Paste #closetomyheart #ctmh #texturepaste #mixedmedia #cardmaking #scrapbooking #papercrafting

For this card, we spread a semi-thick layer of opaque matte texture paste on the background. We didn’t fuss over it too much, resulting in a layer of varying thickness to add an extra pop!

Another application technique we’ve been having fun with is stencil application. By using stencils, you can incorporate all sorts of fun, textured shapes into your artwork.

Texture Paste #closetomyheart #ctmh #texturepaste #mixedmedia #cardmaking #scrapbooking #papercrafting

For this page, we used the opaque matte paste mixed with a drop of New England Ivy re-inker and a Swiss-dot stencil to create the dotted effect. By spreading texture paste evenly across the stencil, we were left with neat rows of perfect little dots, giving this page a truly unique look! Once the paste dried, we used a Gold Shimmer Brush to add a little sparkle and shine.

Sometimes, a project just screams for colored texture. To achieve the perfect pigment for your paste, we have a few tips, tricks, and techniques we know you’ll love!

Texture Paste #closetomyheart #ctmh #texturepaste #mixedmedia #cardmaking #scrapbooking #papercrafting

If you’re wanting a light, pastel hue, try mixing some watercolor paint into the paste. This method allows you to easily control and adjust the pigment of your texture paste.

Texture Paste #closetomyheart #ctmh #texturepaste #mixedmedia #cardmaking #scrapbooking #papercrafting

For a deeper, richer color, try a re-inker. Simply add a few drops of re-inker to the texture paste sample and mix thoroughly to achieve the desired effect.

Texture Paste #closetomyheart #ctmh #texturepaste #mixedmedia #cardmaking #scrapbooking #papercrafting

Want some sparkle in your texture paste effect? Shimmer brushes are a great way to add a little glitter and subtle glam to your texture paste! Squeeze the shimmer brush gently to get a few drops into the paste and mix well. You can also use glittery embossing powder to make the shine a little more obvious.

Tip: It’s always a good idea to do a small swatch test before using colored texture paste in your project to make sure you’ve achieved the color you were hoping for.

Although the application process is fairly quick, you will need to allow for drying time to ensure that the paste is fully set and dry before you move on to the next steps of your project. One way to speed up this process is by heat setting. Not only does heat setting help the paste to dry and solidify more quickly, it also puffs it up slightly, resulting in a smoother, almost pillowy finish. If you want to explore this option, then by all means, break out your heat tool! If you want to keep the stucco-esque finish, you’ll just need to be patient for a bit 😉 . Although this does require more time to dry, we think it’s 100% worth it!

There is so much that can be done with texture paste. What are you guys creating with these artistic tools and medium? Leave a comment and let us know!

Easy DIY Patriotic Wreath

What better way is there to kick off the summer months than with a beautiful patriotic wreath? Display it on your porch or mantel, hang it on a wall, or place it on a shelf to be admired. It will become that conversation piece in your space that you can proudly say, “Yep, I made that!”

Easy DIY Patriotic Wreath #ctmh #closetomyheart #patrioticwreath #diy #papercrafting #fourthofjuly #americana

Materials you will need:

Once you’ve gathered all of your materials, follow these easy steps and begin assembling your wreath.

Step 1—Cut your paper into the following shapes and sizes:

46 – 4″ x 4″ Sapphire cardstock squares
16 – 3½” x 3½” Candy Apple cardstock squares
12 –  3″ x 3″ White Daisy cardstock squares
3 – 9½” cardstock circles, any color*
1 – 2¼”, 2½”, 2¾”, 3″, 4¼”, 4½”, 4¾”, 5″ White Daisy sunburst*
1 – 5¾” cardstock circle, any color (optional template)*
8 –1¼” gold foil stars (optional embellishment)**
2 – 1½” and 2″ gold foil stars (optional embellishment)**
4 – 1¾” gold foil stars (optional embellishment)**

*These shapes can be cut using this Cricut Design Space™ file. If you own a Cricut® machine but do not have access to Design Space, see the recipe at the end of this post for additional cutting information.

**These shapes can be cut using the Cricut® Flower Market collection, Shift + Background <p> or #MD431D.

Step 2—Build your base.Easy DIY Patriotic Wreath #ctmh #closetomyheart #patrioticwreath #diy #papercrafting #fourthofjuly #americana

Stack and attach all three 9½” cardstock circles on top of one another to create your base. Use the optional smaller 5¾” cardstock circle and, with a pencil, trace a guideline onto your base. If you did not cut this piece, draw a guideline by hand approximately 2″ from the edge.

Step 3—Form your petals.Easy DIY Patriotic Wreath #ctmh #closetomyheart #patrioticwreath #diy #papercrafting #fourthofjuly #americana

Once your paper is all cut, roll each square piece like a cone, leaving it open on the top and closed at the bottom; seal the seam with Liquid Glass or hot glue. Roll up each petal keeping the same color intensity of our two-toned cardstock on the outside of each.

Step 4—Assemble the Outer Wreath.Easy DIY Patriotic Wreath #ctmh #closetomyheart #patrioticwreath #diy #papercrafting #fourthofjuly #americana

Using the penciled circle as your guide, start building your wreath starting with the outside layer. Attach your largest petals onto the base, seam down, leaving about a finger width between each. (Tip: pinch the bottom tip of the cone flat when adding adhesive).

When building your second row, place the petals in the spaces created in the first layer, and so on.

Use the large Sapphire petals for the first two layers, then create one layer using the medium-sized Candy Apple petals, and complete the final third layer using the small White Daisy petals.

(Depending on how tightly you roll your petals and how close you attach them, you may end up using a different number than you originally cut.)

Step 5—Build the Center Wreath. Gather your remaining pieces.

Easy DIY Patriotic Wreath #ctmh #closetomyheart #patrioticwreath #diy #papercrafting #fourthofjuly #americana

First, gently bend the “rays” of each sunburst paper piece up with your fingers. Stack and attach all of these pieces together from largest to smallest, with the largest piece on the bottom. Next, glue the paper baking cup, open end down, to the center of the wreath. The baking cup will act as a stand for the sunburst flower you just created so it won’t get buried in the middle of all the wreath’s petals. Glue the bottom of the sunburst flower to the baking cup.

Easy DIY Patriotic Wreath #ctmh #closetomyheart #patrioticwreath #diy #papercrafting #fourthofjuly #americana

Finally, embellish the center of your wreath with the optional gold foil stars and sequins. For our center, we sandwiched two stars of the same size around a toothpick and then attached the toothpick to the white center by wrapping the bottom of it with a glue dot.

Step 6—Display your completed wreath with pride!

How To Make a Shaker Window Page!

We are loving National Scrapbooking Month so far, and we hope you are, too! To continue the celebration, we’re going to really shake things up today and show you how to make a shaker window the size of a scrapbook page!

The-World-Is-Yours-May-scrabooking-collateral-single-layout

STEP 1.  The very first thing you’re going to do is determine the size of window you’d like on your project. For it to fit a traditional 12″ x 12″ scrapbook page, you’ll need to keep your window no bigger than 11½” x 11½”. Next, decide if you’d like the base of the window (the paper that shows through under the sequins) to be the same as your base page or if you’d rather have a different pattern or color show through. If you’re keeping it the same as the base page, skip the rest of this step and move on to number 2. If you’d like the base to be something different, cut a circle* from the patterned paper or cardstock you’d prefer instead. The size and shape you cut here will determine the size and shape of your window. The window on our page is a 10″ circle, so our base is also 10″

*One of the great things about this big window idea is that you’re not limited to a circle shape. Make a square, a rectangle, a heart, a star—your window can be any shape you can cut out from a 12″ x 12″ Memory Protector™. (See step 2.)

STEP 2.  Carefully trim the edges from a 12″ x 12″ Memory Protector™; this should leave you with two clear plastic sheets. Take one of these pieces and cut another circle (or the shape you chose for your window) from it. Make sure this second shape is the same size as your base piece, if you have one.

IMG_8225

STEP 3.  The last thing you will need to cut to create your large window is an overlay. When you cut your overlay, make sure that it is the same size as your other two pieces so they will all match up later when you stack them to assemble your window. On our page, we created an overlay that frames our shape and also has a world map in the center (making our complete project look like a globe). Your overlay doesn’t have to be this complicated. Decide how much of the inside window you really need or want to see. Also take into consideration where you will be putting other elements of your scrapbook page, like photos and journaling.

FullSizeRender 118

STEP 4.  When you’ve got all your pieces cut, gently rub the base and the clear plastic window in circular motions with an anti-static pouch. This will help reduce static cling and allow the sequins move freely when you shake or turn the completed page.

STEP 5.  Carefully place small pieces of 3-D foam tape around the perimeter of your base piece. Keeping your base flat, add a handful of loose sequins inside the frame you just created.

IMG_1833

STEP 6.  Lay the clear plastic shape on top of the 3-D foam tape and press firmly around the edges.

IMG_1856

If you don’t have a separate base piece and are using your base page as the back of your window, add the 3-D foam tape to the perimeter of the plastic shape instead. Then, fill the center of your framed plastic shape with sequins and lay the base page on top of it to attach. Flip the page over to see your window.

STEP 7.  The last step in assembling this large window is to hide the foam frame by layering the overlay on top of it. (An adhesive runner should do the trick!)

FullSizeRender 121

Now that your window is complete, all that is left to do is to attach it to your project along with all of those extra elements that make a scrapbook page truly yours.

IMG_1821

The page we used as our example today comes from The World Is Yours Scrapbooking Workshop Kit. If you’d like to recreate it, be sure to check out the instructions, HERE.

Back to the Basics with Cricut Design Space™—Working with Text

We are continuing our review of the tools in Cricut Design Space™ on the blog, and today it’s all about text. Design Space makes it so easy to manipulate text for any project. It’s not too hard to learn how to use it, and once you do, you can make projects like this one.

Cricut Design Space Fonts #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricut #ctmhdesignspace #youarehere #cricut #designspace #font #seastheday #scrapbooking #memorykeeping

On the page above, you’ll see that we’ve used some of the tools in Design Space to add and curve text to create a unique title. Not only does the title come from the You Are Here Cricut® collection, but so do all of the smaller shapes decorating this page! The You Are Here collection has travel-themed words and shapes for anything from an international adventure, spa retreat, and camping to a day at the beach, just like you see here. Whether your travels take you near or far, this collection has coordinating titles, shapes, and sentiments to document those memories.

Don’t forget, the steps below show you how to create projects in Design Space from a desktop or laptop computer. If you use the app on a mobile device, the buttons and tools will be located in slightly different places on your screen. Typically the same features are available on any device, but when working with text, the Curve tool isn’t available on a mobile device.

Adding Text

When you want to insert text on the canvas, click on Text in the Design panel. A text box and a completely new section of the Edit bar will appear. This is the Text Edit bar, and the tools available here are, as you can probably tell, specifically designed to use with text. In the Text Edit bar, you can choose your font and the style (regular, bold, italic, etc.). You can also do things here like adjust the size, spacing, and even the curve of the font. Simply type in the text box, and then use the tools to manipulate the letters.

Cricut Design Space Fonts #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricut #ctmhdesignspace #youarehere #cricut #designspace #font #seastheday #scrapbooking #memorykeeping

Under Font, you can search for specific fonts, like the one from You Are Here. Letter Space and Line Space both do exactly what it sounds like. Letter Space allows you to bring individual letters closer together or farther apart. As you adjust the spacing, the higher the number, the farther apart they will be. Line Space changes the space between the lines of text in a paragraph.

There are a couple other options you will want to be familiar with in the Text Edit bar. You can use Alignment to move your text to the right, left, or center of the text box. Under the Advanced tab, you have several choices for ungrouping your text. For example, let’s say you’ve arranged your text for your project, but you want to now adjust the size of just one letter. These advanced tools make that possible. You can select Ungroup to Letters. Each letter can then be manipulated separately. Under Advanced, you can also Ungroup to Lines or Ungroup to Layers.

Curving Text

Our favorite part of the Text Edit bar is Curve. This makes it incredibly easy to curve your text, even into a circle. Select the line of text and then select Curve. Moving the cursor to the right will curve the text downward, and moving the cursor to the left will curve the text upward.

Cricut Design Space Fonts #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricut #ctmhdesignspace #youarehere #cricut #designspace #font #seastheday #scrapbooking #memorykeeping

There are a few things to remember with Curve. You can’t use this tool with multiple lines of text. You can only curve one line. There also will be times you will want to pay attention to the Diameter number. If you want to curve one line of text down and one line of text up, entering the same number for the Diameter will ensure the curve of the text remains the same for both the top and bottom.

Cricut Design Space Fonts #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricut #ctmhdesignspace #youarehere #cricut #designspace #font #seastheday #scrapbooking #memorykeeping

With a project like this, insert a square from Shapes in the Design panel and change the size to 11.375″. To help us curve the text for our page, we inserted a circle from the Shapes section and sized it to 6″ to represent the photo we planned to use. This made it much easier to visualize how to curve the text around the photo.

 Slicing Text

Often when you’re working with text, you might want to cut that text from another shape, like we did on this scrapbook page. This is where the Slice tool comes in handy. We showed how the Slice tool works in our last Design Space post with cards (check it out here in case you missed that one.) Just to remind you, you can find the Slice tool at the bottom of the Layers Panel.

Design Space™ Basics #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhcricut #designspace #cardmaking #cards #diy #ctmhsomuchhappy

Again, for this particular project, use the 6″ circle to help you see where things will go on your page. Once you have your placement down, select both the text and the 11.375″ square, and click Slice in the Layers panel. You’ll now have text sliced from the square for your page! Delete the extra sliced text. You won’t need it. When you cut the project, you’ll have the title sliced into a square you can layer on top of another piece of cardstock or paper.

 Pro Tip!

You might have noticed that on our page the “the” looks different than “SEAS” and “DAY,” and you’re right! It does have a Canary piece of cardstock behind it, but the font is also not the same. You can use the same You Are Here font for the entire text and curve it, or you can do this more advanced trick to get the “the” for your title. This is actually a word we sliced from a different shape in the You Are Here collection.

To do this, you’ll first insert the sentiment. It’s shape #M28C97B2. This shape also says “SEAS the Day,” but it didn’t fit quite right on our page. That’s why we chose to work with the You Are Here font instead. To get the “the,” ungroup the image and delete the background piece. Then insert two squares from the Shapes section. These squares are going to help us slice what we want from this shape.

Feel free to resize the squares into smaller rectangles to make them easier to work with. Place one over the word against the right edge of the “e.” Rotate the second one to match the angle of the “h.” Once “the” is completely covered, weld the two squares together BEFORE you slice. Then select the welded squares and the sentiment and click on the Slice tool.

You’ll now have the word “the” as a separate piece! Don’t worry if it takes you a couple tries to get it. That’s where the Undo button comes in handy. Just click that a few times and try again.

Put It Together (Add, Curve, and Slice Text)

Follow the steps below to put it all together and make the Seas the Day layout!

  1. First, insert a square on the canvas and resize it 11.375″.
  2. Then insert a circle and resize it to 6″. This circle is just to help you place your text where you want it to slice from the square.
  3. Insert the text by first clicking on Text in the Design panel. To find the You Are Here font, click Font and then search for “You Are Here” in the search box. Then click on the font to use it.
  4. In the text box, type your title. You can either do the complete title or you can use the pro tip we explained above. It’s up to you! Typing the complete title is definitely easier. Your page will just look a little different. If you go with the pro tip, you’ll want a text box for “SEAS” and then insert a second, separate text box for “DAY.”
  5. Adjust the size of your text BEFORE you curve it. We used 1″ for our font, but you can feel free to make it whatever size you want.
  6. Now use Curve in the Text Edit bar to curve your text as desired. For those of you using the pro tip, place the sliced “the” at the top of the circle. Then curve “SEAS” and “DAY.” Once all three words are placed how you like them, select them all together and group them. This will make it simpler to slice later on.
  7. Once your text is placed and curved around the circle, you can delete the circle. You don’t need it.
  8. Now it’s time to slice! Select your text and the 11.375″ square and click Slice at the bottom of the Layers panel. Delete the extra sliced text.
  9. Before cutting your project, insert any other additional shapes you want to use on your page. We choose to add shapes like the starfish and hibiscus, but you have many, many options from the You Are Here collection. It’s up to you!
  10. Color your project pieces to make it easy to cut on the right color of paper or cardstock. Then select Make It in the top right corner and cut your project pieces.
  11. Put your page together and embellish with a few sequins and sparkles!

These suggestions for using text in your Design Space projects are just the beginning. As you become more comfortable with these tools, the possibilities only continue to grow. Let us know in the comments if there are any other Design Space questions or topics you’d like to see on the blog.
