Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary day, we give you a fairy tale that looks like a free scrapbook pattern!

Free Scrapbook Pattern #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHMoreMagical #MoreMagical #freepattern #freescrapbookpattern #scrapbooking #free #download #scrapbooklayout #magical #adventure #dreamscometrue

This timeless pattern made its original debut years ago with our You Rock collection. Without the need of any pixie dust, the instructions have been revamped so they can be used with any papers and for any occasion!

We created a truly enchanting spread by pairing this pattern with the More Magical paper packet, coordinating cardstock, and stamp set. Our current More Magical workshop kit makes 4 coordinating two-page layouts to preserve all of your magical adventures. Download the pattern and cutting diagrams below and use them to make a fifth coordinating layout to add to your album!

As usual, we encourage you to make this, and any, pattern your own by being flexible with its parts. Take a close look at our completed layout for some examples. Instead of using a small photo at the top of 2D, we filled the space with a stamp. Then, we added another 4 x 4 photo to the layout by splitting it down the middle and attaching half of it on each page to complete the row of photos across the top.

And don’t forget about those pocket cards that are part of the paper packet! Use them whole, cut up, or even torn to incorporate additional patterns, sentiments, and accents. Adding a pocket card with a lighter design to a page made up of darker patterns is also an easy way to create space for stamping.

No matter where your happiest place on earth is, take advantage of the bright patterns and motifs available in the More Magical collection and use them to preserve all of your fairy tale adventures. Remember, this collection is only available through the end of the month while supplies last, so make sure to grab yours while you still can!

Creating Pocket Cards in Cricut Design Space™

Are you ready for some new Cricut Design Space™ ideas? Today we’re going to walk you through creating your very own pocket cards for your pocket scrapbooking layouts. Making pocket cards is a great and relatively easy way to add unique shapes or titles to your memory keeping projects using images that can be manipulated in Design Space. Simply follow our steps below to learn how.

IMG_0060

This layout shows three different pocket cards made with the You Are Here Cricut® collection. The variety of shapes from this travel-themed collection pair perfectly with the colors and patterns of the Fresh Air paper.

IMG_0052

These three pocket cards come together quickly when you use tools like Contour and Slice in Design Space. Let’s show you how to make the layered pieces for the title card, “THE Adventure BEGINS,” from one image in Design Space.

Before getting started, make sure you own the You Are Here Cricut® collection so you can use the same title that we did on this pocket card. You will also need a Cricut® machine that is Design Space™ compatible (any of the Explore models or the new Maker) to link your collections to your account. (If you do not know how to do this, click here.)

The steps below show you how to work in Design Space from a desktop or laptop computer. If you use the app on a mobile device, the buttons and tools will be located in slightly different places on your screen, but the same features are available on any device.

1. Sign in to Cricut Design Space™ at design.cricut.com.

Log in with your Cricut ID and password, and then select the green New Project button in the top right corner.

2. Insert and resize a basic square shape.

Step 2

To make the pocket card base, you will first insert a square by clicking on Shapes on the left side of your screen. Next you can easily resize this square to a 4″ x 6″ rectangle. Click the lock to unlock the size and change the width to 6″ and the height to 4″.

3. Insert the title image and resize.

Step 3

To add the title from the You Are Here collection to your canvas, click Images on the left side of your screen. Then search for image #M2763105 in the search box at the top. This is the exact title you need. Select it and click Insert Images in the bottom right corner to add it to your canvas. Then change the width only to 5.25″. Design Space™ automatically resizes the height to the correct proportions as long as the lock icon above the size is locked.

4. Duplicate the rectangle and title.

Step 4

To create this pocket card, you will need several images to slice and contour. To duplicate both the rectangle and the title, select the image and then click Duplicate in the Layers panel. The second rectangle will serve as the base for your pocket card.

5. Without ungrouping, use the Slice tool on one of your title images.

Step 5

To slice the title, select it and then click “Slice” in the bottom right corner. This will help you create one of the layers on your pocket card. After slicing your first title, you’ll have several pieces of text remaining. The screenshot shows you the three different pieces that will be made after you use slice on this first title image.

6. Delete one of the extra titles.

Delete of one of the extra titles by selecting the red X. Make sure you leave the image with the words “THE” and “BEGINS” on your canvas.

7. Contour the remaining sliced title.

Step 7

With the remaining title image from your slice, you will use Contour to hide the word “BEGINS” from the image to leave only the word “Adventure.” Select it and then click Contour in the bottom right corner. Then click on all the pieces you want to hide to get ride of the word “BEGINS.” This will leave only the word “Adventure” that you’ll use in the next step.

8. Use Slice to cut title into one rectangle.

Step 8

To cut the “Adventure” title into one of the rectangles, click and drag your mouse over the banner and text to highlight both images. This will allow the Slice option to become available in the bottom right corner. Click Slice.

9. Delete extra text and contour the title.

Step 9

Both titles from slicing into your rectangle can be deleted by selecting the text and clicking the red X. You won’t need to use them to build your pocket card. To allow parts of the solid cardstock to show beneath title you sliced in this pocket card, use the Contour tool to remove some of the extra cuts. Select the sliced title and click Contour. Then select some of the inside pieces to remove, like the inside cut of the letters “A,” “d,” and “u.” You can also contour part of the curly line at the beginning and the end of the word.

10. Ungroup the duplicate title image and delete extra pieces.

Step 10

To create Juniper layer of this title, select the duplicate title and click Ungroup in the layers panel. Then delete the purple “Adventure BEGINS” image by select the red X.

11. Assign colors to your project pieces.

Step 11a

Assigning colors to your pieces is an optional step, but it can help you see what color of cardstock you need when you cut your project. You can also color each piece and move them around to visually get a sense for how your project pieces will look when they come together, like we did below.

Step 11b

12. Cut your project and assemble your pocket card!

When you’re ready, click the green Make It button in the top right corner and follow the prompts. We used light Toffee cardstock for the pocket card base and Toffee cardstock for the 4″ x 6″ sliced title card. We used Juniper cardstock for the title piece with the solid banner. Finish it off with New England Ivy cardstock for the separate title pieces, “THE” and “BEGINS” and then “Adventure”. After your pieces are cut, it’s easy to assemble the layers for this title on your pocket card. Just remember that the final layer will be your two New England Ivy pieces, and you’ll attach them to your card over the Juniper cardstock.

If you liked the title we made today but it doesn’t match your photos, that’s an easy fix. You can use the tools in Design Space to create other pocket cards in any color scheme. You’d follow the same steps and then simply choose other colors of cardstock when you cut the project. The creative options in Design Space can be used for your 12″ x 12″ scrapbook pages, but they also allow you to design projects for other types of memory keeping like pocket cards. Enjoy!

Mini Summertime Adventure Album

Mini summertime adventure album #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #cricutartbooking #cricutyouarehere #ctmhjack #camping #cabin #vacationCan you believe summer is already coming to a close? Oh how time flies when you’re having fun! Though it may be hard to wave farewell to days lounging by the pool, visiting family, and traveling to beautiful destinations, you can keep those summertime memories alive and well by creating a mini album. Summertime doesn’t have to end!

We created this camping-themed album with two of our exclusive Cricut® collections: Artbooking and You Are Here.

The Artbooking collection includes a variety of tabbed, hole-punched pages designed especially for creating mini albums like this one! To decorate those pages, we turned to the You Are Here collection, which is our newest Cricut® collection. This collection includes designs to help you document your adventures both near and far away from home. Combine these two collections together, and you’ve got everything you need to create any number of mini summertime adventure albums!

You’ll see lots of the Jack paper packet in our mini album. With its tree, woodgrain, and flannel-inspired plaid patterns, these papers are perfect for documenting your outdoor adventures. Just remember, it’s only available until the end of the month while supplies last, so grab yours while you can!

If these pages inspire you to make an album of your own, feel free to refer to the recipe at the bottom of this post to see which products we used, as well as more details about the Cricut® cuts.

Matching Made Easy

As many of you know, we have four color palettes called Whimsy, Adventure, Enchantment, and Basics—and for each of these color palettes, we have a bunch of coordinating products, including themed embellishment packs we call “Complements.”

Just like the name implies, these Complements perfectly complement the other products in a given color palette—which makes creating cohesive artwork a breeze!

Well, with our latest idea book, we’ve come out with four more themed Complements packs for these color palettes. They include stickers, die-cuts with foil, and all sorts of other cute accents, all of which match the color palette.

See how you can combine these new Complements with their coordinating patterned papers below!

You’ve seen how the Complements and papers work in a given color palette, but if you’re adventurous, take it to the next level! Add stamping by using ink colors that coordinate with the palette, and then add even more by using cardstock or ribbons from that palette as well! Check out the “Fundamentals” section of your Annual Inspirations idea book for more inspiration.

Being a Close To My Heart Independent Consultant has a lot of perks: You get to make money doing what you love, plan your work schedule however you’d like, meet women with similar interests, and save big on products with your Consultant discount, just to name a few. But during the month of July, there are three MORE reasons to become a Consultant: Adventure, Whimsy, and Enchantment!

What are we talking about? Our brand new Fundamentals paper collections, which feature 24 double-sided sheets of beautiful patterned paper. And we’ve also created Complements (stickers and die-cuts) that coordinate with each Fundamentals collection that have three themes—everyday moments, baby, and school.

If you join as a Consultant in July, not only will you get to preview these products before everyone else (they’re not available to the public until August 1!), and not only will you get to order them before anyone else, but you will get one paper collection and its coordinating Complements for FREE! You can choose any of these three collections you want!

Did we mention that it only costs $75 USD to join, and you get $50 in Select Product Credit, which means you basically join for $25? Yeah, it’s a great deal and super low risk!

Around the World: Thailand

Thailand

We’ve arrived at the last stop of our global adventure —Thailand! An exquisite country in southern Asia, Thailand has a rich culture that blends elements of Indian, Chinese, and Cambodian cultures. Today’s artistic tradition is sure to brighten your day and light a smile on your face. 😉 Just look at this picture!

"Yi peng sky lantern festival San Sai Thailand" by Takeaway - Own work. Licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0 via Commons.

Breathtaking, right? This lantern festival, called Yi Peng, is part of an ancient religious ceremony that pays homage to Buddha. It’s celebrated primarily in the city of Chiang Mai and is part of a larger religious tradition in Thailand called the Festival of Lights. While others release lotus-shaped offerings filled with candles, incense, and flowers onto bodies of water, the people of Chiang Mai instead release thousands of rice paper lanterns into the night sky while making a wish.

The ceremony and the amazing imagery created by thousands of lanterns in the night sky were so inspirational, we just had to ask one of our artists to create artwork inspired by Yi Peng. We think this card perfectly captures the simplistic beauty of this religious practice and art form.

CTMH Thailand card

Though this card takes a minimalistic approach, the gold sequins and purposeful stamping embody the warmth of the message it carries. Just like the people of Chiang Mai release paper lanterns as tokens of dedication and hope, giving a card to someone in need shows your dedication to that relationship—it says, “I really care about you.” Such a gesture can do so much to ignite hope in someone who is downhearted. It can be a light in an otherwise dark sky. That is the brightening influence you can have by sending your well wishes and beauty into the world.

The next time you create a card, think about these lanterns, and remember—you are striving to make the world beautiful, and that cause, in and of itself, is something to celebrate.

Feeling inspired? We know we sure are! Now that you’ve viewed artistic traditions from four countries around the world, we hope you take some time to reflect on all you’ve learned, and then create amazing artwork from your new pool of ideas. We’ve loved being your personal tour guide, and we hope to see you on another trip soon!

P.S. Folks, this is our last “Around the World” blog post! Be sure to leave a comment to enter to win the travel stamp giveaway! We will announce the winners on the blog Thursday, August 27, so be sure to tune in!

Pushing the Envelope: A Letter to Papercrafters

Dear Papercrafters,

When you hear the word “envelope,” you probably think of the plain, white ones used to hold cards, letters, and bills. Well, we’re writing to tell you that, contrary to popular belief, envelopes are not only purposeful but also artful! Today we’re going to expand the envelope’s repertoire by showing you how to incorporate these playful pouches into your artwork.

Let’s start with scrapbooking. With the help of the Cricut® Artfully Sent Collection, you can create miniature envelopes from brightly colored papers to embellish your pages and layouts. Take a look at the three mini envelopes on this page:

Love You

These adorable envelopes are the perfect way to add a sense of familiarity, friendship, and intrigue to any scrapbook page. And wouldn’t it be a fun place to showcase a child’s nickname, a family saying, or a cute quote? We think so! Leave your envelopes closed, open, or a mix of both for visual variety.

Love You mini envelope

Using a double-sided paper, like one from our Paper Fundamentals line, makes for a cute peek-a-boo pattern on the inside of the envelope.

If you don’t have a Cricut® machine, don’t worry! You can still join the envelope fun by gathering up some of those plain, white purposeful envelopes you have lying around the house and upgrading them to a beautiful photo album.

One of our artists created a mini album with 4 ¼” x 5 ½” White Daisy envelopes, and we think the results are simply genius! It’s stowaway scrapbooking with bits and pieces tucked here and there that make the act of thumbing through the pages almost as adventurous as the memories themselves.

Life Album

The envelope acts as a perfect pocket for holding smaller pictures or little notes about the experience. Attaching paper tabs to the back of these keepsakes makes it easy to lift them from the envelope pockets. Plus, it looks pretty cute, too.

Eiffel Tower

Use the plainness of the envelope to your advantage by showcasing stamps or embellishments on its smooth surface. Our artist used a simple yet meaningful stamp and design on this envelope:

Lighthouse

Have we convinced you to try using envelopes to preserve your favorite memories, yet? Whether you’re cutting mini envelopes on your Cricut® machine or repurposing plain card envelopes, we’re confident that you’ll find a way to take the creative reputation of envelopes from drab to fab.

Best wishes in your quest to push the bounds of envelope creativity!

Sincerely,

Close To My Heart
