Creating Multiple Windows on a Scrapbook Page + FREE Cricut Design Space™ File!

We are down to the final months of the year, and that means we have some major holidays just around the corner! There is so much to celebrate, and with all of the memories you are bound to make, you’re going to need somewhere to preserve them. Follow along to learn how to recreate this beautiful scrapbook page, featured on the cover of our new October–December catalog, so you can use it for your memory keeping this coming season!

Creating Multiple Windows on a Scrapbook Page + FREE Cricut Design Space™ File! #scrapbooking #windows #shakerwindow #cricut #designspace #peekaboo #ctmh #closetomyheart #christmas #christmasstory #memorykeeping

Cricut Design Space™ File:

To kick things off, click here for the free Design Space file that will cut the circle shapes out of a 12″ x 12″ sheet of patterned paper to create the top layer of the base of the page. Since circles are part of Cricut’s “basic shapes,” you do not need to own any Close To My Heart collections to use the free download!

Materials Needed:

Our main focus today will be on creating and filling the multiple circle window spaces. Here’s what you’ll need:

·  a 12″ x 12″ patterned paper sheet (for the cutout layer)
·  a 12″ x 12″ base page, one that will hold all of the window elements in place (we used a sheet of White Daisy cardstock)
· 3-D foam tape
·  small circle shaker window foam + acetate
·  coordinating shaker window fillers (we used gold star confetti)
·  glitter paper
·  coordinating cardstock
·  additional, coordinating patterned papers

Tip: The glitter paper, cardstock, and patterned papers will be used for the background of the circles, so it’s a great way to use up some of your scraps!

·  coordinating embellishments (die-cuts, acrylic shapes, stickers, etc.)

(If you’d like to duplicate our page, exactly, see the recipe at the end of this post for a complete list of products that you will need.)

Instructions:

1. Pair the Design Space file provided above with the 12″ x 12″ patterned paper and cut the top layer for the base.

2. Place the cutout layer on top of the 12″ x 12″ White Daisy cardstock, or whatever you’re using for the base page, and with a pencil lightly trace all of the circles onto it. Remove the cut layer and now, with the marked up base page, you’re ready to start building the individual windows!

Creating Multiple Windows on a Scrapbook Page + FREE Cricut Design Space™ File! #scrapbooking #windows #shakerwindow #cricut #designspace #peekaboo #ctmh #closetomyheart #christmas #christmasstory #memorykeeping

3. We will start with the “hardest” windows (they’re really not that hard), and those are the shaker windows. We chose to incorporate two shakers on our page, one at the top of the page and one at the bottom. Both bases for these shakers are 2″ circles, one cut from patterned paper and the other from cardstock.

Using the technique we shared a couple of months ago in A New Approach to Shaker Cards, Step-by-Step, we assembled the shaker windows on the back side of the cutout layer (rather than on top of it). On the back side of the cutout patterned paper, you will attach the acetate, then attach the circle foam tape, then add the filling, and finish by attaching the base.

Tip: For more detailed instructions on how to assemble these shakers from the back, visit the post mentioned in the step.

4. On the solid base page, cover the penciled circles that will not be shaker windows with patterned paper, cardstock, or glitter paper. You can cover all of them or leave a few blank. What you cover or don’t cover is what will show through on your final page.

Tips: You do not have to stay inside the lines. In fact, we encourage you to go over a bit, just outside the lines, so the edges of the circles won’t be visible when the top layer is attached later. You are also not confined to using circles to create these background spaces. All that matters is that you cover the spaces that were drawn on the base page in their entirety. As you cut your paper pieces, refer to the image below to know the size of each circle, if necessary.

Creating Multiple Windows on a Scrapbook Page + FREE Cricut Design Space™ File! #scrapbooking #windows #shakerwindow #cricut #designspace #peekaboo #ctmh #closetomyheart #christmas #christmasstory #memorykeeping

5. Add more dimension to the page by embellishing a few of these circle spaces even further using acrylic shapes, die-cuts, stickers, stamped images, etc. You’ll notice that two of the circles on our page are embellished with acrylic stars and heart die-cuts. Unlike the confetti in our shaker windows, these stars and hearts were attached to the prepared base page because there will not be acetate keeping them from falling off the page. Plus, we preferred a more organized look for these spaces 🙂.

6. Once all of your circles are prepared, it’s time to do some additional prep work to attach the two base pieces together! Here’s where you pull out the trusty 3-D foam tape! Depending on where you chose to place your shaker windows and other three-dimensional embellishments is where you will need to add 3-D foam tape to your base page. There are some of us out there that will want to add foam tape all around the perimeter of the page and each of the circles, and possibly a few additional places. If that is you, by all means, go for it! If you’re in the camp of being more frugal with your use of foam tape, then add it where you see that the page will not be supported up by the parts that have already been prepared, including the four corners of the page.

7. With your base page prepared with foam tape, line up the cutout layer with the base, focusing on the edges and corners, and attach!

Tip: Add some regular adhesive to the backs of those shaker windows for a firmer grip in those areas.

And there you have it! It may seem like a lot of steps, but the idea behind this page is simple enough that you will find it comes together easier than you might think!

Creating Multiple Windows on a Scrapbook Page + FREE Cricut Design Space™ File! #scrapbooking #windows #shakerwindow #cricut #designspace #peekaboo #ctmh #closetomyheart #christmas #christmasstory #memorykeeping

Mat a photo and add it to the page, along with a few more embellishments and journaling, and you’ve got a gorgeous page worthy of any scrapbook!

Whether you’re backlogged on memories that need a home or are wanting to get a leg up on what you know is to come in these next few months, this type of scrapbook page is versatile enough that it can be used for a variety of themes, not just Christmas. The circles on this page could be used to make constellations and planets for beautiful pictures that come with a night sky, bubbles for those adorable bath time photos or for underwater pictures from a tropical holiday. This type of effect could form the background for flashier New Year’s Eve photos, Halloween costumes, back to school, or any other theme you can think of!

However you decide to use this page, we hope you enjoy this time of year to the fullest and preserve the beautiful moments you are creating!

Back to School Teacher Gifts!

How is it the middle of August already? Bells will ring, announcing the start of a new school year, and students and teachers, alike, will be back in the thick of it all before we know it!

Our teachers give so much of themselves, year after year. As our children prepare to return to fill their classrooms, let’s add to their supply lists a small gift of appreciation and encouragement!

We’ve got three simple projects for you and your kiddos to work on and bring to your teachers on that momentous first day.

First, we have a fun twist on the traditional school apple.

Did you know that, back in the 1700s, some families would give teachers a basket full of apples as payment for their child’s education? Now-a-days, the gifting of apples (or an apple) shifted from attempted compensation to a kind gesture of appreciation.

We’ve got a delicious variation of this popular gift with these gorgeous paper apples.

You will need three different color/pattern papers for the body of the apples, another paper for the leaf, and another for the tag (if you choose to add a tag). You will also need a pencil (cut down to 6″), adhesive, and twine.

We used a combination of shapes from our Art Philosophy Cricut® collection and free shapes available through Cricut Design Space™ to cut the pieces you see here. (School Apple Cricut Design Space™ file.) If you don’t have a cutting machine, we kept the shapes fairly simple so they could be recreated by hand. We recommend making the apple shape first, on a scratch piece of paper, and then using this as a template to trace and hand trim the six apples needed for the 3-D apple shape.

Once you have all of your shapes cut, fold the apple pieces along the score lines and attach them to each other, as shown above. (For those of you who cut these shapes by hand, there should be two score lines in the middle of each, approx. ⅜” apart.) Before attaching the last two wedges together, closing the circle, glue the pencil inside the “core.”

Embellish the apple with a leaf and a tag and then it’s ready for school!

Dressed up sticky notes is another fun way to show your teachers a little love. You know they will use sticky notes throughout the school year, so why not add a little flair and present them as gift?

To make one of these, you will need a 3″ x 3″ sticky note pad, one sheet of cardstock for the base of the holder, hook and loop dots (aka velcro dots), adhesive, and any type of embellishment you wish to add to the inside or outside of the base.

Use this Design Space file to cut the long, scalloped and scored rectangle cardstock piece you see here. (If you are cutting it by hand, the rectangle is 3¼” x 8½” and has score lines at 2⅛”, 2⅝”, 5⅞”, 6⅜” from the bottom.) Once you’ve cut and scored the cardstock, this project is pretty intuitive. First, attach the note pad to the center of the cardstock. Next, fold the pieces up and around the note pad. Then, embellish the top of the holder however you’d like, and finish by adding a hook and loop pair for the closing.

The last diy gift of appreciation we’re showing you today is actually a gift box for you to make and then fill with small goodies.

To make one of these boxes you will need two sheets of cardstock or pattern paper (that’s if you’d like for the box insert and sleeve to be different colors or designs), adhesive, and embellishments of your choice.

Use this Design Space file to cut the necessary shapes. (If you don’t have a cutting machine and would like to make a gift box, use this link to learn how to make one similar to the one shown here.)

Fold the cut paper along the score lines and attach them with adhesive to create the sleeve and box insert. Decorate the top of the box with additional papers, the teacher’s name, and other embellishments, and then fill it with goodies you know your teacher would like (tissues, lotion, hand sanitizer, a gift card, candies, etc.). That’s it!

Now, let’s show our teachers some love and encouragement this upcoming school year by letting them know, even in small ways, that we see and recognize their hard work and dedication.

In the comments below, we’d love to hear what you’re doing to show your teachers how much you appreciate them. ❤️

A New Months of the Year Stamp Set Series!

Months of the Year Stamp Sets #closetomyheart #ctmh #monthsoftheyear #calendar #perpetualcalendar #diy #scrapbooking #january #february #march #april #monthlystampsets

There’s something to love about each month and season, so we’re rolling out an entire years’ worth of stamping fun with a Months of the Year stamp series! With sentiments, icons, and borders for a variety of crafting projects, the stamp sets in the Months of the Year series provide a way to create beautiful artwork for any time of year. Today, we’re going to show off a few of the ways that the January and February sets can be used, and we have a feeling that once you’ve seen these two, you won’t be able to wait for the rest!

With every new set comes new opportunities to craft calendar pages, layouts, and so much more! Each Months of the Year set comes with a variety of different stamps to aid you as you create seasonally specific artwork all though the year. Throughout 2021, these stamps sets will be released, two at a time, with each of our bi-monthly catalogs, so you can look forward to the release of new sets through the end of the year!

Months of the Year Stamp Sets #closetomyheart #ctmh #monthsoftheyear #calendar #perpetualcalendar #diy #scrapbooking #january #february #march #april #monthlystampsets

Because Close To My Heart serves a global market, we’ve created two stamp sets for each month—one for crafters in the northern hemisphere, and another for artists in the southern hemisphere!

(🤓Fun Fact: Seasons are reversed between the northern and southern hemispheres! When someone in the US might be sledding or skiing, it would be a great time to hit the beach in Australia!)

These stamp sets are not only great to use individually but can also be used to create your own series of artwork along a theme! One of the most challenging parts of memory keeping can trying to decide which stories to tell, and where they should be placed. With a separate set designed for each month of the year, it’s easy to put together monthly scrapbook pages and in no time, you’ll have an entire album telling the story of the past year! This adorable Valentine layout is a wonderful example of how the stamps from the February stamp set can be used as perfect accents for the page design.

In this example, it’s easy to see how well the stamps and the paper we used complement each other, even though they weren’t specifically designed to coordinate with each other. Each Months of the Year set is easy to integrate into your artwork and includes enough variety to mix well with all our paper collections!

In addition to scrapbook layouts, the Months of the Year stamp sets are also a great tool to use when creating calendar pages! As you can see here, we’ve used these stamps to add decoration to full-size calendars and smaller perpetual calendars as well!

The Months of the Year stamp sets will all be available through the end of 2021, so you can order them at a time that works for you, pick and choose your favorites from the series, or get them regularly as they’re released. No matter when or where you use these stamps, we know you’ll love the beautiful designs and gorgeous artwork you can create with them! Did you have a favorite stamp or an idea of how you’d use the Months of the Year stamp sets? Leave a comment below and let us know!

You’ve Got Class: Teacher Edition

School days are well underway, and not just for the kids! Teachers are some of the world’s most wonderful people. They selflessly dedicate themselves to motivate and inspire others, and aim to make learning an effective and exciting experience. To show our love and support for these education superheroes, we’ve taken the You’ve Got Class collection, originally designed to preserve the best of your child’s school years, and came up with a variation of projects to give as gifts and to use around the classroom.

You've Got Class for Teachers #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHYou'veGotClass #bookmarks #teachers #school #backtoschool #gifts #prizes

Memory Keeping Gift:

Every year we give our teachers gifts, either for holidays or at the end of the school year, showing them just how much they mean to us and to our children. Using the materials from the You’ve Got Class workshop kit, create something truly meaningful and unique that you know they will show off around the teachers’ lounge and will want to keep forever.

You've Got Class for Teachers #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHYou'veGotClass #bookmarks #teachers #school #backtoschool #gifts #prizes #truefitfolio #memorykeeping

Design scrapbook pages on the included True Fit Folios, completing the first folio with pictures of your child’s class and teacher. Use photo placeholders on the remaining folios for her to add photos of her future classes from the years to come. The folios then become an ideal place for the teacher to preserve her memories and mementos of each passing school year. Lastly, place your decorated folios inside Memory Protectors™ in an album and present this beautiful memory-keeping gift to your teacher. The teachers in your life will never forget your family or this thoughtful gift!

Some Other Ways to Use This Collection Around the Classroom:

More often than not, schools and classrooms come with supply wish lists at the beginning of each academic year. Sometimes these lists are looking for “prizes” that can be handed out in the course of the year to those who’ve done something to earn them. We came up with a few ideas:

Bookmarks!

(No matter how advanced we are with our technology, books are still part of our curriculum 🙂 )
You've Got Class for Teachers #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHYou'veGotClass #bookmarks #teachers #school #backtoschool #gifts #prizes

Gift tags.

Personalized notebook covers.

You've Got Class for Teachers #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHYou'veGotClass #bookmarks #teachers #school #backtoschool #gifts #prizes

Even if your child’s classroom supply wish list doesn’t have these sort of items on it, educators can use these cute additions as welcome gifts to leave on their student’s desks at the beginning of the year, or as a gift during the holidays, or for a treat at Halloween, or simply just because they love their students (including yours).

Whether commemorating the scholastic achievements of your child or showing appreciation for the teachers who guide them along the way, the You’ve Got Class collection is your key to truly classy papercrafting.

Preserving the Best of Your Child’s School Years

You've Got Class #closetomyheart #CTMH #you'vegotclass #ctmhyou'vegotclass #backtoschool #memorykeeping #organizing #organising #school #schoolpicture #schoolmemento #schoolkeepsake #schoolalbum #backtoschoolSummer adventures are coming to a close as school bells begin to ring, generating much excitement and anticipation for a new academic year. We’ve prepared our children’s wardrobes, collected supplies, and arranged for healthy lunches in hopes of ensuring as much success as can be planned for. Just as we’re about to send these kiddos into the seemingly unknown, we prop them in our porches, getting on a school bus, or standing with their teacher and make them smile for the camera. Click!

And they’re off! School is back in session. Before you know it, you’re knee deep in artwork, certificates of excellence, report cards, and all kinds of treasures that you just don’t know what to do with. You most certainly don’t need to keep everything your child scribbles on, but there are and will be some things that you will cherish and value for a long time, if not forever. This happens year, after year, after year.

Because we are committed to memory keeping, we had to come up with a system that works to preserve these wonderful and prized memories. With some thoughtful consideration, we were able to put together a project that comes together quickly and easily to create a scrapbook album for all of these formative school years. Dear non-scrapbooker reading this post, please hear us out for a sec. before you assume this no longer applies to you. 😉

You've Got Class #closetomyheart #CTMH #you'vegotclass #ctmhyou'vegotclass #backtoschool #memorykeeping #organizing #organising #school #schoolpicture #schoolmemento #schoolkeepsake #schoolalbum #backtoschool

With the materials and instructions included in the You’ve Got Class workshop kit you create an entire album with one page for each school year. What makes this workshop unique to other scrapbooking workshops are our True Fit Folios. True Fit Folios are white cardstock folders that fit perfectly inside 12″ x 12″ Memory Protectors™. The workshop is designed so that each scrapbook page is assembled on a side of one of the folders. After you complete all of your pages, or folder sides, you insert them into the Memory Protectors™ inside an album. With this completed album, you are all set and ready to start adding your keepsakes and mementos inside the pockets, where they will be securely and safely stored for years to come!

You've Got Class #closetomyheart #CTMH #you'vegotclass #ctmhyou'vegotclass #backtoschool #memorykeeping #organizing #organising #school #schoolpicture #schoolmemento #schoolkeepsake #schoolalbum #backtoschool

If you’ve got any kids in your life—children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors—this workshop is for you. Even if these “kids” are old and grown, chances are their school day relics are collecting dust “in a box somewhere.” (Well-preserved memories make a wonderful gift!)

If you’ve been looking for a way to store school memories with easy access, this is it. If scrapbooking is “not your thing,” this is the time to reconsider, even if it’s just this once. You want this album on your shelf, and so do your kids—cross our hearts!

And for those of us who are constantly click, click, clicking with our cameras, there are likely a few additional photos to include on the folio pages. We thought of that, too!

The You’ve Got Class workshop kit includes Flip Flaps™ so that more photos, journaling, or keepsakes can be added anywhere on a page without taking up additional room. Yep—they’re like magic! 🙂

Preserve the best of your child’s school years with the You’ve Got Class collection of products. This special features a paper collection, exclusive stamp set, and workshop kit specifically designed to commemorate the passage of these school years. But act quickly, these products are only available through September 30 while supplies last! (And they are moving fast!)
