Custom Banners in Cricut Design Space™

As we celebrate National Scrapbooking Month, why not combine the vacation vibes of the Postcard Perfect paper packet with the endless possibilities available with our Cricut® collections and Cricut Design Space™? Using the variety of banners in the Artistry Cricut® collection, you can cut personalized text using the Slice tool. This gives you unlimited flexibility to create titles for your scrapbook pages that perfectly capture what you love about your photos and memories.Custom Banners in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhpostcardperfect #postcardperfect #nationalscrapbookingmonth #nsm #ctmhnsm #scrapbooking #scrapbook #cricut #cricutdesignspace #designspace #ctmhdesignspace #ctmhcricut #slicetool #slice #banners #banner #sunshine #summer #vacation #youarehere #ctmhyouarehere #artistry #ctmhartistryWe made this scrapbook page by slicing text in a banner image from the Artistry Cricut® collection. This allowed us to create a unique title to match the sunny, happy moment captured in this family vacation photo. Today we are going to give you step-by-step instructions to create a banner title just like the one you see here using a banner, font, and the Slice tool in Design Space™.Custom Banners in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhpostcardperfect #postcardperfect #nationalscrapbookingmonth #nsm #ctmhnsm #scrapbooking #scrapbook #cricut #cricutdesignspace #designspace #ctmhdesignspace #ctmhcricut #slicetool #slice #banners #banner #sunshine #summer #vacation #youarehere #ctmhyouarehere #artistry #ctmhartistryBefore getting started, make sure you own the Artistry and You Are Here Cricut® collections to use the same banner and font that we did in this project. You will also need a Cricut® machine that is Design Space™ compatible (any of the Explore models or the new Maker) to link your collections to your account. (If you do not know how to do this, click here.)

The steps below show how to work in Design Space™ from a desktop or laptop computer. If you use the app on a mobile device, the buttons and tools will be located in slightly different places on your screen, but the same features are available on any device.

1. Sign in to Cricut Design Space™ at design.cricut.com.

2. Insert the banner image.

Then, search for image #M418562 in the search box at the top. This is the exact banner you need to recreate our example. Just select it and click Insert Images in the bottom right corner to add it to your canvas.

3. Resize and ungroup the banner image.

Change the height, only, to 3.5″. Design Space™ automatically resizes the width to the correct proportions as long as the lock icon above the size is locked. Then, ungroup the banner by selecting the image and clicking UnGroup in the Layers panel in the top right. This will leave one solid banner and one outline banner.

4. Duplicate the solid banner.

To create a second solid banner, duplicate the image by selecting it and then clicking Duplicate in the Layers panel.

5. Insert first line of text, “LET THE,” and resize.

To add the first line, click on the Text icon on the left side of your screen. Then click Fonts in the Text Edit bar and search in the search box for “You Are Here.” Select the font, type your text, and then resize the font height in the Text Edit bar to 0.5″.

6. Move and rotate the text over the banner.

7. Check text placement before slicing.

Select the banner outline, and then click Arrange in the Tools panel. Select Move To Front to make sure the outline will move over the top of the solid piece, rather than behind it. If your text needs to be adjusted, move or rotate as needed, and then check placement again.

8. Use Slice to cut text into the banner.

This will allow the Slice option to become available in the bottom right corner. Then, click Slice.

9. Delete extra text.

Both lines of text can be deleted by selecting the text and clicking the red x.

10. Repeat with second line of text, “SUNSHINE IN.”

Custom Banners in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhpostcardperfect #postcardperfect #nationalscrapbookingmonth #nsm #ctmhnsm #scrapbooking #scrapbook #cricut #cricutdesignspace #designspace #ctmhdesignspace #ctmhcricut #slicetool #slice #banners #banner #sunshine #summer #vacation #youarehere #ctmhyouarehere #artistry #ctmhartistryRepeat the same process to slice the second line of text for “SUNSHINE IN” on the banner to complete your title. Keep in mind, if you feel like the text is too tight on the banner, you can adjust the height to make it slightly smaller.

11. Cut your project!

Custom Banners in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhpostcardperfect #postcardperfect #nationalscrapbookingmonth #nsm #ctmhnsm #scrapbooking #scrapbook #cricut #cricutdesignspace #designspace #ctmhdesignspace #ctmhcricut #slicetool #slice #banners #banner #sunshine #summer #vacation #youarehere #ctmhyouarehere #artistry #ctmhartistryFor our page, we used our Lagoon and Lemon cardstock. Keep in mind our cardstock is two-toned. One side has the full strength color, and the other side is a lighter hue. Use the light side of Lagoon for the banner with text and the dark side of Lagoon for the banner outline. If you like, you can also assign colors to your project pieces before cutting the project. This makes it easy to see what cardstock to use as you cut. When you’re ready, click the green Make It button in the top right corner and follow the prompts. Then, insert your cardstock, and you’ll have all the pieces you need to create this project on your own!

You can use this same process to create your own titles from banners found in the Artistry collection. With so many options, you can customize your titles to match any scrapbooking project! And don’t forget to take advantage of this month’s National Scrapbooking Month special with the Postcard Perfect paper packet and other coordinating products to make a page just like ours.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™

One of the easiest tools to use in Cricut Design Space™ is Contour. We love how this feature allows you to hide portions of an image and remove unwanted cut lines. This gives you even more flexibility and customization with your Close To My Heart Cricut® collections. Shapes that have patterns or cuts inside them can be turned into solid images!

18-0071-blog-page

We created this scrapbook page using one flower image from the Artistry Cricut® Collection. With the Contour feature, we took the striped flower and created a solid flower. By varying the size and colors of both flower shapes, we ended up with the delightful page you see here. Today we are going to walk you through the steps of creating your own contoured flowers in Design Space to make a similar creation!

In order to use the same shapes that we did in this project, you’ll need to own the Cricut® Artistry and Flower Market collections. You will also need to have a Cricut® machine that is Design Space compatible (any of the Explore models or the new Maker) to link your collections to your account. (If you do not know how to do this, click here.)

As you follow the outlined steps below, keep in mind that this shows you how to use features in Design Space from a desktop or laptop computer. If you use the app on a mobile device, the buttons and tools will be located in slightly different places on your screen.

1. Sign in to Cricut Design Space™ at design.cricut.com.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnLog in with your Cricut ID and password, and then select the green New Project button in the top right corner.

2. Insert the flower image.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnTo add this specific flower image from the Artistry collection to your canvas, click Images on the left. Then search for image #M40FD89 in the search box at the top. This will give you the exact flower you need for the project. Just select it and click Insert Images to add it to your canvas.

3. Ungroup the flower image.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnWhen an image like this one has multiple layers, you first need to ungroup the image before contouring. Ungroup the flower by selecting the image and then clicking UnGroup in the Layers panel on the right.

4. Delete the dark purple flower.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnTo create this page, you only need one of the flowers in this image. Now that you’ve ungrouped the image, delete the dark purple flower by clicking the red x at the top left corner of the image.

5. Duplicate the flower.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnYou will use solid and striped flowers on this page. This means you’ll need both the original flower and the one you are going to contour on your canvas. Duplicate the lined flower by selecting Duplicate in the Layers panel.

6. Contour the flower to create a solid image.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnTo contour, select one of the striped flowers and then click Contour in the bottom right corner of the Layers panel. A pop-up box will appear on your screen, just like the screenshot above. In this instance, you’ll select Hide All Contours in the bottom right corner of the pop-up box. This lets you hide all the contours without having to click on each one individually. If you only wanted to contour part of your image, you could select only the portions you wanted to hide. After hiding the contours, you now have a solid flower shape with no interior cuts.

7. Duplicate and resize the flowers.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnDuplicate and resize flowers for your page as desired. To resize the flowers like we did, select the image and change the height under Size. We used flowers at heights of 1.5″, 1.75″, and 2.25″. Leave the size “locked” so that when you change the height, it will automatically resize the width, keeping the shape proportions the same.

8. Assign the flowers colors.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnAssigning colors to your flowers will make it much easier when it’s time to cut the project with your Cricut® machine. Design Space will group all images in the same color together for cutting. You can easily group shapes together under different colors using the Color Sync panel, like you see in the screenshot above.

9. Insert the banner image.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnThis page also uses the Contour feature to make a solid banner for a small sentiment. Insert the small banner by clicking Images and searching for #M416E8C.

10. Ungroup and contour the banner.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnAfter the image is on your canvas, ungroup the banner, just like you did with the flower. Then select the banner and click Contour in the Layers panel. For this image, select only the individual cuts you want to hide, instead of selecting “Hide All Contours.” Click on the X and O portions of the banner and you’ll see them change color, indicating that they will no longer be cut out of the banner shape.

11. Resize and assign colors to the banners.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnThe banner images on our page are a height of 1.5″. Resize the banners just like you did with the flowers, leaving the size lock in place. Enter 1.5 for the height, and the width will automatically resize with the correct proportions. Then assign colors to each banner piece for cutting.

12. Insert the leaves image, then duplicate and resize them.

Contouring Shapes in Cricut Design Space™ #ctmh #closetomyheart #cricut #designspace #design #space #flower #leaves #floral #shapes #cutting #flowermarket #artistry #collection #diy #howto #tutorial #learnAdd finishing touches by including some leaves from the Cricut® Flower Market collection. Add the image by searching for #MD37FB8. Then duplicate and resize the leaf image as desired. We used leaves at heights of 1″ and 1.5″.

13. Add circles for flower centers.

There are two ways to add the small circles to your project. You can search for and add image #M417CAC, ungroup the image, and delete the “EEK!” circle, which will leave you with a solid circle. Resize it to 0.5″, duplicate, and assign a color. The second option is to insert a circle from the Shapes option on the left side of your screen. Select the circle, and a solid circle will be added to your canvas.

14. Cut your project!

When you’re ready, click the green Make It button in the top right corner and follow the prompts. Your Cricut® machine will group cuts together according to the colors you assigned. Just insert your cardstock and you’ll have all the pieces you need to create this project on your own!

Now, you’ve successfully contoured a flower and a banner from only two images in the Cricut® Artistry collection. Using contouring, you can create solid shapes, like we did with the flowers and banner, to create dimension and variety in your projects. There are so many creative ways you can use this feature to adjust the shapes in your Close To My Heart Cricut® collections to get even more options in your crafting! Enjoy!

With Thin Cuts dies on our minds all month long, let’s talk about two of our new comers from the Seasonal Expressions 1 catalog, the Party and Title Banners!

These new die sets are designed to cut the banner shapes you see here as well as score (without cutting!) where the dotted lines are for effortless and accurate folding. Adding a touch of three-dimensional flair to your cards and layouts just got easier!

Use the Party banners to create personalized headings and signs to commemorate any occasion. Take a look at how we incorporated them into these scrapbook pages, one with the straight banner and another with the curved one.

Using our basic banner Thin Cuts, we were able to create the incredibly fun page you see above. It came together quickly and easily, no fussy cutting required!

With Thin Cuts, you can see where to place the die on your photo to make sure you cut the shape exactly how you want it. The die is an outline of the shape it will cut. There’s no wondering if you’re going to accidentally trim someone or something important out of your photo. Place the die on your photo, check to make sure your subject displays how you want it to, and run the die and photo through your die-cutting machine to get a perfectly shaped photo.

This also lets you make sure you choose the right size shape for your photo. Basic shape Thin Cuts come in shapes like hearts, stars, circles, or ovals in four different sizes for a variety of options.

Cherry on Top: Garnish Your Parties with Banners

As April continues to blossom, we continue to celebrate celebrations! Once you finish your invitations and get them in the mail, you can get to work planning party décor as you anxiously await your guests’ arrival.

And what better way to welcome them to the celebration than a lovely banner? A banner is something simple that packs a lot of punch and sets the overall mood for the party. It is a wonderful focal point that adds festivity to any gathering and makes everything more fun!

Today we bring you two banners that have been designed for either a wedding or a bridal shower, but both of them can be easily customized to suit whatever occasion you’re celebrating.

This two-toned banner achieves elegance with ease, making it a great piece of décor for even the classiest events. The artist used a single stamp and some gold embossing powder to create the shimmery cascade of gold that graces the tips of each of these panels. Scattered gold sequins add touches of dimensional texture and contrast. Hang this lovely creation on the table that holds the wedding cake, or on the wall above the pile of gifts. You could even use this banner at an anniversary party! Ah, sweet papercrafted bliss.

This second banner we bring you is all about layers and color. The artist used a variety of cardstock, extra thick twine, and stamps to create a lighthearted piece of décor that’s bursting with fun. You can easily switch out the word “Love” and the “XOXOXO” sentiment for words that suit your celebration, making this banner a chameleon for all occasions. Our favorite thing about this banner? The Glacier extra thick twine tassels that make this banner pop with life!

Try a banner at your next party! For even more party fun, get some ideas on how to package party goodies in papercrafted glamour from this blog post of a few months back. Or, for a Christmas twist on banners, read this post. (Yeah, we know it’s only April, but that doesn’t mean we can’t think about Christmas at least a little bit.)

Happy partying! You’ve got this celebration in the bag. 🙂
