We are so excited to share this shaker birthday card with you! Not only does it use the new Round Balloon Thin Cuts, but, if you look closely, you can see that we shook things up with how we created the window!

Unlike the shaker cards we’ve shown you on this blog, so far, all of the shaker cards pictured in our new Core Products Catalog have the window mechanism built from behind a large framing project piece, rather than on top of it!

Let us show you what we mean!

If you recall, in May we shared how to recreate the shaker window on the Tutti Frutti: Here’s the Scoop scrapbook page. On that page, and up until then, we built a shaker window on top of a base and then attached it to the project.

A New Approach to Shaker Cards, Step-by-Step #cards #cardmaking #shakerwindows #shakerwindow #shaker #interactivecrafting #process #stepbystep #ctmh #closetomyheart #dimension #sequins #confetti #instructional
A New Approach to Shaker Cards, Step-by-Step #cards #cardmaking #shakerwindows #shakerwindow #shaker #interactivecrafting #process #stepbystep #ctmh #closetomyheart #dimension #sequins #confetti #instructional

On this birthday card, we are still building the shaker element separately and then attaching it to the art. However, the top “frame” that attaches to the acetate window is a larger piece of the final project, which helps to seamlessly integrate the shaker element into the artwork.

A New Approach to Shaker Cards, Step-by-Step #cards #cardmaking #shakerwindows #shakerwindow #shaker #interactivecrafting #process #stepbystep #ctmh #closetomyheart #dimension #sequins #confetti #instructional

Another thing that we did differently with this card was to create the window’s shape using a die that is not specifically designed as a “shaker window” Thin Cuts. The round balloon, as you can see in this very same card, is part of a standalone Thin Cuts set that can be used to create paper balloon shaped accents and does not have to be used for creating windows. (How fun that it can be, though!!)

Let’s take a closer look at this card and assemble the front shaker part of it, together!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Round Balloon Thin Cuts
Small Circle Shaker Window Thin Cuts (optional)
Small Circle Shaker Window Foam + Acetate
Clear Loose Gems
Pink Mini Hearts
2½” x 2½” Light Ballerina Cardstock (optional)
3″ x 4″ Light Seabrook Cardstock
Adhesive Runner

A New Approach to Shaker Cards, Step-by-Step #cards #cardmaking #shakerwindows #shakerwindow #shaker #interactivecrafting #process #stepbystep #ctmh #closetomyheart #dimension #sequins #confetti #instructional

Assembling a shaker window from behind:

1. From the Seabrook cardstock, die cut the balloon and keep the resulting negative space portion to use on your card. (Keep the balloon, too, for another project!😉)

Tip: When you are cutting the balloon, remember which side of the cardstock you want facing up, toward the front. One side of the cardstock is the true Seabrook color, and the other side is a lighter tone of the color. On our card, we wanted to use the lighter side as the front and kept that in mind as we positioned our die.

2. From the Ballerina cardstock, die cut a 2″ circle. (The circle in our Small Circle Shaker Window Thin Cuts is 2″.)

Tip: We also wanted to use the lighter side of the Ballerina cardstock. Because a circle is a symmetrical shape no matter how you turn it, it didn’t really matter which way we cut it.

A New Approach to Shaker Cards, Step-by-Step #cards #cardmaking #shakerwindows #shakerwindow #shaker #interactivecrafting #process #stepbystep #ctmh #closetomyheart #dimension #sequins #confetti #instructional

3. Flip the prepared Seabrook cardstock over and attach the circle acetate. Only use adhesive along the edges of the cut-out balloon shape on the cardstock.

4. Carefully pull the circle foam tape off the backing sheet it comes on and attach it to the perimeter of the acetate.

5. Add gems and hearts, or your choice of filling, to the center of the frame. Do not add too much, so there is enough room for movement once the shaker is complete.

6. Expose the adhesive on the top of the circle foam tape and attach the cardstock circle.

7. Attach the shaker window to your project!

A New Approach to Shaker Cards, Step-by-Step #cards #cardmaking #shakerwindows #shakerwindow #shaker #interactivecrafting #process #stepbystep #ctmh #closetomyheart #dimension #sequins #confetti #instructional

As you can see on this project, the back of our window is light Ballerina and the cardstock that it was attached to is light Flamingo. We did this intentionally to make the window more visually interesting, especially since a few of the mini heart colors are on the darker side. With the lighter center, you can see all the pieces and nothing gets lost in the background.

If you do want your shaker window’s background to match the piece you are attaching it to on your project, you can simply skip the step of cutting out the backing circle and  attach another part of your project to the shaker instead. This may be a little bit trickier, depending on what your project is. If it gets too complicated, just cut out a circle in the same patterned paper or cardstock color as the piece your shaker will be attached to on your project and use that to back your window before attaching it. No one will know!

This cute card is just one of the many shaker window cards pictured in our Core Products Catalog using this new approach for the window! We’ve collected them all for you below, along with their recipes, so you can continue to get inspired and shake things up!

As soon as this collection was available, we knew we had to “party” with it, and that means getting crafty and creating scrapbook pages and cards! We designed both a scrapbooking workshop and a cardmaking workshop featuring these beautiful paper designs paired with a variety of coordinating products from the new Core Products Catalog, including unique, stand-alone stamp sets and Thin Cuts dies.

With the Celebrating You cardmaking workshop, you can create 12 interactive cards, four each of three designs, using the You Deserve It All Stamp + Thin Cuts paired with the Pull Tab Thin Cuts.

(Once you build the mechanism yourself the first time, chances are you won’t need this guide for the next one—it really is that intuitive!)

As if that Cardmaking workshop wasn’t fun enough, the party keeps going with the Celebrating You scrapbooking workshop. With this workshop, you can create three coordinating 12″ x 12″ two-page layouts and one single-page layout using the new Background Elements stamp set and Square Patterns Thin Cuts, which are used to add a wide variety of geometric patterns and effects to these layouts.

Birthday Memory Keeping with Pocket Scrapbooking

Birthday Memory Keeping with Pocket Scrapbooking #pocketscrapbooking #memorykeeping #birthday #cakeday #crafting #ctmh #scrapbooking #picturemylife #video

Whenever you’re celebrating something special, there are always a multitude of stories and memories to capture. Today, we’ll be showing off a quick and easy approach to birthday memory keeping that shows a unique way to include more memories into just a couple of pages using pocket scrapbooking!

Birthday Memory Keeping with Pocket Scrapbooking #pocketscrapbooking #memorykeeping #birthday #cakeday #crafting #ctmh #scrapbooking #picturemylife #video

If you’re not familiar with pocket scrapbooking, it’s a memory keeping technique that focuses on bringing a variety of small elements together into a cohesive collage. With a traditional scrapbooking page, it can be difficult to find a way to include all the photos and journaling sections that belong to the story you’re telling without the page becoming busy or overcrowded. With pocket scrapbooking, however, this problem can be eliminated as the collage effect allows for a large quantity of photos, journaling, and artistic elements.

One of our favorite things to include in pocket scrapbooking layouts are Picture My Life Cards. These 3″ x 4″ and 4″ x 6″ cards are created along with the exclusive paper collections available in our catalogs. (Check out our current paper collections in the March–April catalog here!) Because the cards are designed in conjunction with these collections using colors from our exclusive color palette, it’s a breeze to mix them with other products from the collection to create coordinated and polished artwork.

Birthday Memory Keeping with Pocket Scrapbooking #pocketscrapbooking #memorykeeping #birthday #cakeday #crafting #ctmh #scrapbooking #picturemylife #video

When crafting with Picture My Life Cards, you can save time, paper, and fuss, all while creating something truly unique to you. To demonstrate how easy it can be to create a pocket scrapbooking layout of your own, we’ve put together an instructional video featuring one of our Home Office employees and veteran crafter, Kristina Livingstone. In this video, you can learn and craft along with Kristina as she creates a fun 2-page pocket scrapbooking layout! Enjoy!

As memory keepers, we adore any chance we get to explore new techniques and methods to preserve our best-loved stories, and the pocket scrapbooking technique is one of our favorites! What stories would you tell using this method? Let us know in the comments below!

This little triangle is especially versatile because you can mix and match the different stripe patterns with each other, or stamp either stripe pattern on a solid stamped triangle to create a variety of colorful pennants for a banner.

Papercrafting Party Time!

When March rolls around, it’s party time at Close To My Heart! Not only is it our Founder and CEO Jeanette Lynton’s birthday month, it’s also a time to celebrate all the things you love about crafting! Today, we’ll be taking you on a step-by-step journey through the process of creating an adorable celebratory card and a handful of festive badge decorations to help you get into party mode!

If the artwork we’re showing off today looks familiar, that’s because it is featured on the cover of our new March–April catalog, which we just released! This artwork is geared toward a birthday celebration, but you can easily switch out sentiments and embellishments to suit a variety of occasions. We’ll be looking at two party crafting essentials: cards and décor!

Papercrafting Party Time!#ctmh #closetomyheart #party #celebration #crafting #papercrafting #cardmaking #decor #DIY

When creating a birthday card, a standout design is key for creating a fun and memorable card! For this Happy Birthday Cake card, we used papers and coordinating colors from the new Cake Day collection.

A prominent feature of this design is the diagonal slit through the center of the card. This slit is only 1/8″ wide, but it makes a big impression! To achieve this look, you’ll want to first apply any detailing to the top piece of paper, like we’ve done with the stamped details and colorful splatters shown here. Then, you cut the piece diagonally from the top-left to the bottom-right corner.

Papercrafting Party Time!#ctmh #closetomyheart #party #celebration #crafting #papercrafting #cardmaking #decor #DIY

Once the cut has been made, take each piece of paper, and along the cut line you just made, slice off half the width of the slit. Because we created this card with a 1/8″ slit, we cut off 1/16″ from each individual piece after the initial diagonal cut has been made. If the thought of cutting a 1/16″ strip makes you break into a sweat, consider recreating this look using a wider slit in the middle.

The thing that makes the slit work is choosing a fun paper to peek through it! For our card, we used Wild Berry Glitter paper and cut it to not only peep through the slit but also to provide a nice border around the top piece.

After selecting our papers, we created an embellishment cluster to place at the center of the card, comprised of a Cricut®-cut circle, a few stickers from the Cake Day sticker selection, some Gold Embellishing Thread, and a “Happy Birthday” sentiment and balloon die-cuts from the Cake Day—Cardmaking Stamp + Thin Cuts set.

Papercrafting Party Time!#ctmh #closetomyheart #party #celebration #crafting #papercrafting #cardmaking #decor #DIY

Finishing up with a few Primary Sprinkles and Bitty Sparkles, this vibrant birthday card is sure to be an unforgettable part of any birthday celebration!

For the décor part of our art feature today, we’ll be going through the creation process for a selection of party badges that are sure to be a hit anywhere! For these badges, we’ve provided a downloadable Cricut Design Space™ file, which uses some basic element shapes to construct a few of these badges.

Papercrafting Party Time!#ctmh #closetomyheart #party #celebration #crafting #papercrafting #cardmaking #decor #DIY

These badges feature patterned papers from the Cake Day paper collection as well as some of the coordinating cardstock colors. You can easily customize these badges by choosing a paper collection or cardstock colors that fit the theme of whatever you are celebrating. Cardstock is a great option for this kind of project because of how versatile it makes the final piece—and now is a great time to stock up on cardstock because our exclusive cardstock is on sale all month long during our Cardstock Carnival! Talk about reasons to celebrate!

You’ll need to attach a scoring tool to your machine to achieve the final, pleated look for the badge bases. Once you’ve cut all the pieces, gently remove them from your Cricut® mat to avoid tearing, and fold accordion-style along the scored lines. Create the badge shape by compressing the piece, holding the center section, and gathering the accordion fold into a circle shape. Secure the center of the circle and both ends with adhesive.

Once you’ve secured the ends and center of your badge base, you can attach any other embellishment pieces, like the dovetailed ribbon pieces on the “Party” and “Cake Time”, sentiments or stickers. You can even stack smaller pleated badge pieces on larger ones, like you see on the “Cake Time” and Wild Berry bow badges. Because these badges require relatively few process steps, it’s easy to cut and construct several at once, making them a project that not only is fun and simple to create, but is sure to wow wherever it’s used!

Papercrafting Party Time!#ctmh #closetomyheart #party #celebration #crafting #papercrafting #cardmaking #decor #DIY

Don’t have a Cricut® machine? No problem! These badges can also be made by hand by using a hand-held scoring tool. (In fact, four of the seven badges shown below were created using this method!)

To create badges by hand, cut a piece of paper with a width of half the desired diameter of your finished badges (e.g. For a 2″ finished badge, trim paper to a width of 1″). Once you’ve cut your paper to the desired width, you can either use a scoring attachment with a paper cutter, or you can use a papercrafting tool and a ruler to create your own score lines by hand. We’ve created our score lines 1/4″ apart, but you can use different measurements for larger or smaller pleats.

From there, you simply fold your paper accordion-style along the scored lines, compress the piece, holding the center section, gather the accordion fold into a circle shape, and secure the center of the circle and both ends with adhesive. Once you’ve constructed your badge, add a few embellishments, and you’re left with a beautiful, handmade decor piece!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this artwork showcase featuring some of our newest items from the new March–April catalog. Click here to view the catalog and all the exciting new products available through March and April. Happy March, and happy crafting!

From Stacy Julian: World Storytelling Day Giveaway!

Storytelling #ctmh #closetomyheart #worldstorytellingday #storyteller #stacyjulian #connectedstory #extendedstory #giveaway #free #scrapbooking
Since today is St. Patrick’s Day 🍀I want to remind us all—Irish or not—how very LUCKY we are to be able to document and preserve stories.

Our daily lives have been turned upside down in so many ways right now and we’re all growing accustomed to that uncomfortable feeling of uncertainty. One of the very best things we can do is actually turn to our love of documenting to both capture what’s happening around us for the future and to remember and revive happy moments from our past. Both of these actions have been proven to be sources of strength and calm in times of crisis.

The kind of storytelling that is most helpful is the kind that illustrates connections to our past and reminds us how much doesn’t change. This storytelling is easier than you might suspect—especially with the concept of extended and connected stories available in the Storyteller how-to book.

Extended stories use layers of Memory Protectors™ and lots of photos mixed in with spots of journaling that share both the expected and the unexpected details. When those details point to another person, place or related thing then a connection is created.

Here, let me show you …

Storytelling #ctmh #closetomyheart #worldstorytellingday #storyteller #stacyjulian #connectedstory #extendedstory #giveaway #free #scrapbooking

When I was working in my studio on this extended story for Addie’s birthday, she came into the room, looked at the 5″ x7″ photo on the first page and said, “My teeth! They were so big.” I replied, “Guess what? I, too, had big teeth when I was your age!” And right then I got an idea. Why not find a photo of me at age 9 and add it to this layout? This, my friends, is a connection. Addie is no longer just a cute girl celebrating a birthday, she is a cute girl who feels connected to her mother because her mother also passed through the big teeth phase of childhood.

Connections also pull details from photos that the casual observer might miss. Using the photo of Addie and her friends, just before they jumped into the pool, I was able to discern that girls between the ages of 8 and 10 clearly prefer to wear their goggles when jumping (and being photographed!). This example may be a bit silly, but there will always be “little known fact” details about life, culture, location, or any activity available to you that can be highlighted in your journaling and that will draw simple, but interesting connections from your story.

Storytelling #ctmh #closetomyheart #worldstorytellingday #storyteller #stacyjulian #connectedstory #extendedstory #giveaway #free #scrapbooking

One of the primary reasons I love this approach to storytelling is ALL of these fun pockets. I get to include more photos and capture a more comprehensive representation of (in this case) a birthday party!

Storytelling #ctmh #closetomyheart #worldstorytellingday #storyteller #stacyjulian #connectedstory #extendedstory #giveaway #free #scrapbooking

Look, here, at the second 4″ x 3″ pocket from the top. Another connection! When you share bits of your own memories from the past, as you document events in the present, you will always improve your story and your storytelling skills. Of course, the Story FYI stamps are designed to help you add these “did you know” details.

So, let’s review. An extended story is simply one that uses layers of memory protectors to include more photos and more story. A connected story is an extended story that includes journaled details from another person, place or time. These connections enrich your story and make it more fun for you and your audience.

Watch this full story experience with Addie and keep on telling those stories. They matter and the perspective you gain as a storyteller will bless you with a wonderful sense of confidence and calm, even when life gets crazy!

Storytelling #ctmh #closetomyheart #worldstorytellingday #storyteller #stacyjulian #connectedstory #extendedstory #giveaway #free #scrapbooking

Story Tip: I love the personality of handwritten journaling, but sometimes it makes more sense to use your computer. You can include both styles in an extended story! Whenever you hear yourself say, “I don’t know what to write!” Make a list. Your brain is exceptionally good at listing out details—there’s not much “writing” involved, and you can list things in random order. A list of 9 things for a 9th birthday is totally doable!

Giveaway: Would you like the opportunity to win a free Celebrate Today Paper Packet + Sticker Sheet, Memory Protectors™ Combo Pack, and a My Acrylix® Story FYI stamp set? Make sure you are subscribed to this blog and leave a comment below sharing what you love most about extended and connected stories. This Friday, March 20th, is World Storytelling Day. At noon (MST) on Friday, five lucky winners will be chosen and later notified via email. Let’s all tell our stories, especially those that we are currently living. Best of luck friends! <3

Love,
Stacy

For my birthday, I want to celebrate you, the wonderful people in my life. One way I plan on doing this is through the special that we just launched on March 1st, These Are My People. One of my favorite products in this special is the These Are My People Cut Above® kit. (All of the pages that you are seeing today are from this kit, complete with pictures of our wonderful Close To My Heart Consultants! <3 )

The beautiful collection of products available through the These Are My People campaign, especially the workshops and the Cut Above® kit, are truly an embodiment of the Close To My Heart mission.

A fifth winner will also be picked for a grand prize. This lucky person will receive the album, pen, and Cut Above kit, as well as a $50 (USD) credit to Persnickety Prints, and a Sticky Boy and Sticky Girl stamp (because they are some of my favorite people, too!)!

25 Journaling & Photo Prompts for Recurring Life Events

25 Prompts to Document Recurring Life Events #ctmh #closetomyheart #birthdayscrapbook #vacationscrapbook #holidayscrapbook #Christmasscrapbook #scrapbooking #memorykeeping #journalingprompts #photoprompts #journaling #photography

Are you in one of those families that go to Disney World once year? (lucky! 🙂 ) Do you spend most Christmas mornings at home in your pajamas? What about a birthday? We all have one every year. Holidays, birthdays, vacations, parties—the good times just keep coming, and so do the stories and photos that accompany them.

Earlier this month we shared a post about New Ways to Document the Holidays. We thought it would be worthwhile to follow that up with some additional ideas and prompts for other recurring life events so that we don’t always take the same photos and document the same stories year after year.

The following ideas can be used to take photos while you’re in the moment or as a place to start your journaling while you’re documenting the memory. If you’re new to scrapbooking or you’re just in a memory keeping rut, the following prompts can help get you going.
