At Close To My Heart, it’s no secret that we love LOVE! Love is one of the most amazing things on earth, and as we’re only about a month away from Valentine’s Day 2023, we want to take some time to share a few ideas about how you can celebrate the love in your life this year!

Whether you’re celebrating new love, old love, love for family members, friends, or any other relationship, there’s no better way to commemorate it than with handmade crafts from the heart. With that in mind, we want to introduce you to our love-themed collection, Now & Forever!

This collection is a callback to vintage floral patterns and is perfect for any design you can dream. The patterned paper is an adorable flurry of soft pinks and floral themes, with a dash of French-inspired flair, and a sticker sheet that kicks things up a notch with metallic gold accents.

Another stand-out feature of this collection is the accompanying assortment of embroidered floral and butterfly embellishments, which are a great way to dress up your cards and scrapbook pages!

Last but not least is the Now & Forever Stamp + Thin Cuts set, which includes an exclusive selection of stamps, floral and butterfly dies, and a very special heart doily die, complete with delicate lace edging! To see the power of Now & Forever in action, we’re going to take a peek at the cards and scrapbook pages featured in the Now & Forever workshop kits!

Our first stop on our Now & Forever journey is to take a look at the pages included in the scrapbooking workshop kit. First on the list is this 12″ x 12″ “Cutie Pie” layout. This layout was designed with room for eight total photos, making it a wonderful way to tell a story!

With predominant themes of red, pink, and white, and splashes of Seabrook, this layout is a gorgeous backdrop for fond memories and journaling. One of our favorite parts of this layout is the selection of patterns and their flow across the page. The ledger pattern on the left page is balanced by the floral pattern on the right page, bridged by the red patterned paper that spans the center of the layout. Although not entirely symmetrical, these patterns flow nicely when grouped together this way—just another benefit of using coordinated papers in a Close To My Heart paper packet!

Our second piece on the hot seat today is this single “Timeless” page. Right away, our eyes are drawn through the page from the “Timeless” title in the upper left-hand corner down through the lower right-hand corner, which sports a delicate lace-edged heart doily.

This unique feature is created by using the die in the Now & Forever Stamp + Thin Cuts set.The rest of the accents and detailing in this page were created using stickers, zip strips, and the Now & Forever Embroidered Embellishments, and we love how it came together!

One of our favorite parts of the Now & Forever suite is the metallic gold detailing present on many of our stickers. These are on full display in this “Laugh Often…” layout. While this layout has a lot going on in terms of patterns, additional excitement is generated by the presence of multiple gold-accented stickers at various points around the pages.

This layout also includes another heart doily die-cut, this time repurposed as a journaling piece! Between the innovative journaling piece and the selection of sparkly stickers, this layout is a wonderful example of the impact a few well-placed embellishments can have!

Before we move on to our array of cards, we want to show off one last scrapbook layout, which brings together many of the stand-out elements discussed in the previous pages. The “Our Story” layout utilizes a beautiful blend of patterns from the paper pack, a couple of our embroidered embellishments, another heart doily journaling piece, and a large golden sticker serving as the title piece.

All of these elements taken together create a gorgeous backdrop for the photos and journaling shared in this layout, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to showcase them! At the top of each cardmaking workshop guide, you will find the technique featured in the workshop’s artwork. For example, the In Full Bloom cardmaking workshop features second- and third-generation stamping.

As you dive into the guides a bit further, you will find that the featured techniques are spelled out in clear and simple terms to make the crafting experience as user friendly as possible, for even the newest of crafters!

Today, we’re pulling the technique right out of the In Full Bloom cardmaking workshop guide and sharing it, here!

So, what is “generational stamping?” For starters, it is a simple technique to master, and one that can easily elevate your artwork when you use it creatively. (Yay! 😄)

A first-generation image is achieved with basic stamping. You ink the stamp and then stamp it on your project. A second-generation image is what you get when you stamp that same image again, using the same stamp but without re-inking it in between uses. A third-generation image, as you have probably figured out, is the resulting image of when you stamp a third time with that same stamp, without re-inking. Every generational image is a lighter version of the previous version because you are stamping with less ink each time.

If you want to use a second or third generation image on a project but not a first, then simply stamp the first image on a scratch piece of paper and then stamp on your project.

The butterfly in the card above was stamped using this generational stamping technique and then colored in with a marker, using a little less color with every later generation.

Thinking Beyond the Lines with Unique Thin Cuts!

One of the quickest and simplest ways to dress up your artwork is to add a unique Thin Cuts die-cut (or a few) to the mix! Our Thin Cuts metal dies are easy to use and produce gorgeous die-cuts time and time again. Let’s look at some of the more unique Thin Cuts from our July–August catalog and explore the various ways to use them to maximize creativity!

First up, we have our Isabella–Cardmaking Stamp + Thin Cuts set. This Thin Cuts set includes five metal dies and features the large “Love” and “You” and banner dies.

These dies make an impression all on their own, but when you pair them with the intricate patterns in the accompanying Isabella—Cardmaking stamps, it takes them to a whole new level! Combining these stamps and the larger dies results in dimension that literally bursts off the page. When you create with these dies and stamps, you can either stamp on the die-cut after it’s been cut out of the paper, or you can stamp on paper and then use the Thin Cuts to cut your image. It’s completely up to you!

Next, let’s take a look at the Isabella—Scrapbooking Stamp + Thin Cuts set. A few of the floral stamps and dies in this set have been specifically designed to layer over each other for greater dimension within these images. This results in more metal dies, but with our magnetic carrier sheets, you’ll never have to worry about losing a piece.

With these duplicated stamp images and die-cut outlines, you can easily combine them for a more dimensional image, larger image clusters, or you can use them separately for even more floral fun! To get the most out of these stamps and Thin Cuts, we recommend attaching them with 3-D foam tape.

The last die we’re looking at is the Butterfly Background Thin Cuts. This fun, stand-alone die yields an intricate image with a variety of delicate stitched butterflies and floral cut-outs. Because this die includes so many small or delicate pieces, you may find that you have a few left over at the end of your project, but don’t throw them out! You can always save the smaller pieces as accents to use in other projects whenever you’re looking for a unique embellishment.

One of our favorite ways to use this die is to cut several layers in various colors, patterns, or textures and allow them to peek through the cut-out portions, while leaving the larger stitched butterflies at the forefront. This die even allows for the butterflies to have lifted wings, bringing your artwork to life!

Bask in the Fun of Masks!

You already love creating artwork to preserve memories, but what about using artwork to make memories? We’ll show you one of our favorite ways to do just that: handcrafted masks!

Kids will love donning these masks for costume parties, impromptu plays, and games of dress-up. And why should they be the only ones? The masks make us want to waltz to the orchestra music at a masquerade ball, too! They’d be perfect for a last-second costume, as you can choose papers that coordinate with your favorite outfit to craft a mask that will unify the whole ensemble! Whether for special occasions or everyday moments, these masks will add some flair to your fun!

Ready to find out how to replicate these masks? You can create a mask of any color with your favorite paper or cardstock. Then make it unique—pull out your stash of accessories and decorate to your heart’s desire. The possibilities are infinite! If you’d like, you can start by replicating one of the masks pictured above. Let’s take a closer look at the cat mask first:

Are you wondering how our artist got the white designs to show up, even on the Black cardstock? The answer: our chalk marker! It may take a few coats, but this ink will decorate even your darkest papers. What a cool tool, eh? Just “chalk” it up to our passion for exciting products!

And did you notice the darling curls at the end of the cat’s whiskers and the butterfly’s antennae? You can thank the wonderful quilling tool for that! For those less familiar with the technique, the quilling tool is a stylus with a small slot at the top. Slip a strip of paper into the slot and the tool will grip it as you twist the paper around the quilling tool. Twirl it as tightly as you like, and enjoy the resulting curls!

Doesn’t the butterfly mask look like it’s ready to take flight? The credit for that goes to the three-dimensional effect our artist used on this mask. To create this look, she first cut two identical shapes from the Pomegranate ombre B&T Duos™ paper featured in Sangria. Next, she decorated the top layer with the chalk marker and bitty sparkles. (That was the fun part!) She finished by attaching the embellished layer to the bottom one with some 3-D foam tape. Beautifully simple, right?

So bring back the make-believe days filled with princesses and pirates, and give those days to the next generation of dreamers by creating paper masks like these for your children and grandchildren. And don’t forget to take pictures—you’ll want to scrapbook those later! 🙂
