At Close To My Heart, we absolutely love color! A great palette is the foundation for great artwork, and has an unparalleled ability to inspire, energize, and soothe. We recently launched our new Core Products catalog and, with it, eight new colors that were added to our exclusive color palette, including Color of the Year, Wild Berry!

Today we’re going to show you how to create beautiful artwork using this statement color in three different color combinations. To get started, we’ve arranged the Close To My Heart color palette into a color wheel. Choosing colors for your artwork can be easy when you’re working with the right tools—and that includes the best color options!

***Keep in mind that our exclusive colors are made up of much more complex tones, shades, and hues than how they are categorized on the simplified color wheel offered above. As you reference and use this source, know that it is not 100% confining. As you become more familiar with what makes colors work together visually, you’ll find that this color wheel is very flexible.***

The Wild Berry color combinations we’re sharing today are reminiscent of what you would see in our Love of Color how-to book series. Each two-page spread focuses on one exclusive color from our palette shown in three different pieces of artwork, each in a unique color scheme. You’ll never second-guess your color choices again with this inspirational guide!

In this first example, see how Wild Berry beautifully works together with Sapphire, Lagoon, Mint, and Sundance. With Wild Berry as the dominant color, the yellow-orange, blue, and blue-green shades create gorgeous complementary elements, tying the entire piece together.

In these next cards, we combined Wild Berry once again with Lagoon and Mint, and then with Nectarine and Scarlet. Wild Berry acts as an accent color in the standard size card and dominates in the slimline card. We can give you all the color combinations, but in the end it’s up to you to decide how much of each color you want to use and how to balance your artwork. You can use the same color combination to create several pieces of art but they do not have to look or feel the same! (Isn’t color amazing?!)

For our final combination, we paired Wild Berry with Avocado, Black, and Charcoal.

If you look at Wild Berry and Avocado on our color wheel, you’ll notice that these two colors are opposite each other, which means they are complementary! We incorporated the neutral tones of black and charcoal for accents, but this is really a complementary color scheme in disguise!

Color Theory: Double Complementary Color Schemes

Tetradic Colors #ctmh #closetomyheart #colortheory #colourtheory #color #colour #theory #tetradic #double #complementary #doublecomplementary #rectanglecolors #rectangularcolors #colorwheel #colourwheel #wheel #orange #violet #blue #yellow #goldrush #eggplant #canary #sapphireThis is it, the last of our color theory posts! In our final installment of this series, we’re going to highlight tetradic (or double complementary) color schemes and show you how to create them on your own.

In a double complementary scheme, we use a combination of four colors that, as the name implies, is made up of two complementary color pairs. (Remember, two colors are complementary if they are opposite each other on the color wheel.) To make it even easier, this kind of color combination is also known as rectangular colors because when the four colors are connected on the color wheel they form a rectangle.

Tetradic Colors #ctmh #closetomyheart #colortheory #colourtheory #color #colour #theory #tetradic #double #complementary #doublecomplementary #rectanglecolors #rectangularcolors #colorwheel #colourwheel #wheel #orange #violet #blue #yellow #goldrush #eggplant #canary #sapphire

Because the four colors have to form a rectangle to fit this scheme, there are really only so many combinations that you can form. Six, to be exact:

  1. orange, yellow, blue, violet
  2. yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-violet, red-violet
  3. yellow, green, violet, red
  4. yellow-green, blue-green, red-violet, red-orange
  5. green, blue, red, orange
  6. blue-green, blue-violet, red-orange, yellow-orange

Once you’ve chosen one of these combinations, jump on the Close To My Heart color wheel and pick from the exclusive colors that fall into each category.

Another way to approach color choice, like in previous color schemes we’ve discussed, is by starting out with a color you want to use, like Eggplant, and then drawing the rectangle from it to determine what the other three colors could be.

This card uses Close To My Heart exclusive colors that fall within the orange, yellow, blue, and violet combination—Goldrush, Canary, Sapphire, and Eggplant.

The page above makes use of the yellow-green, blue-green, red-violet, and red-orange combination—Sweet Leaf, Crystal Blue, Thistle, and Poppy.

Tetradic colors tend to be quite vibrant and can even be jarring if used in equal amounts. To avoid creating artwork that is hard to look at when using this type of color scheme, choose one dominant color and use the other three to accent. Including neutrals in your designs, like we did with white in both of our examples, is an easy way to subdue the effects of this bold combination.

After reading, reviewing, and applying the color principles that we’ve been discussing these past few months, it’s easy to see that making harmonious color combinations isn’t so hard. Keep that trusty color wheel close by and pick your colors with confidence!

Try This Technique for Mixing Up Your Paper Combinations!

If we’re going to talk about mixing and matching papers, we have to start by talking about our Fundamentals! In a nutshell, each of our color palettes has coordinating Fundamental papers, and these papers feature a variety of single-color paper designs. You can think of them the same way you think of cardstock: You have single-color patterns in each of our exclusive colors that you can use any time you are working with a given color.

We’ve created the Fundamentals so that they can be used as both stand-alone paper packets and be mixed in with themed paper packets, like those in our seasonal idea books. If the thought of trying to mix your Fundamentals with a different paper packet makes you nervous, we’re here to walk you through it, step by step!

Step One: Find the themed paper packet you want to work with. Let’s start with Little Dreamer as an example.Try This Technique for Mixing Up Your Paper Combinations! #ctmh #closetomyheart #paper #scrapbooking #tips #techniques #howtoStep Two: Look up the featured colors in this paper packet. They’re listed in a few places: on the zip strip at the very top of your papers, in the idea book, and on our website when you’re viewing the paper packet in online shopping.

Step Three: Choose which color you want to add more of to your artwork. Then it’s as simple as finding that specific color in the Fundamental paper packets, and using that paper in your artwork!

Not sure which colors are in each Fundamental paper packet? No problem! They are listed in your idea book and online, just like you can see with the Little Dreamer paper packet above!

For example, let’s say you’re working with Little Dreamer. You see that Thistle is one of the featured colors, and you would like to add more of it to your artwork.

Thistle is part of the Whimsy color palette, so you can pull out your Whimsy Fundamental paper packet, find the Thistle designs, and add them to the other papers you’re going to be using.

Can you spot the Thistle Fundamental paper on this layout?

How about now? 🙂

It matches perfectly, right? There’s also Lagoon Fundamental paper here.

Here are some other examples where we’ve mixed Fundamental papers with themed papers:

Now you certainly don’t have to follow these steps to mix and match papers. You can always just grab patterns and colors that look good together (our artists do it all the time!). But if you haven’t tried going free-style before, or if just the thought of it is enough to scare you, following these steps is a good place to start.

Color Coordination Made Easy

Introducing Sea Glass, our first-ever Color of the Year! #ctmh #closetomyheart #seaglass #mint #scrapbooking #cardmaking #crafting #colorinspiration #trendycolor

One thing we are most proud of is the way our color palette makes color coordination effortless. Essential crafting supplies like cardstock and inks are available in all of our exclusive colors, which are the same colors used in patterned papers and many accessories.

This year, we’ve introduced a new color that we’re calling our Color of the Year. Like our other colors, this trendy, minty hue called Sea Glass comes in a stamp pad, mini pigment pad, re-inker, cardstock, and glitter paper. You’ll also see hints of Sea Glass in different patterned papers, embellishments, and other products throughout the year.

Since Sea Glass has been introduced in this stand-alone way, today we want to share some ideas for how you can combine Sea Glass with our other colors.

Introducing Sea Glass, our first-ever Color of the Year! #ctmh #closetomyheart #seaglass #mint #scrapbooking #cardmaking #crafting #colorinspiration #trendycolor

We love Sea Glass paired with yellows. It’s a great color combination for your spring and summer layouts because it’s bright and happy. Add black to the mix for a clean, modern vibe.

Introducing Sea Glass, our first-ever Color of the Year! #ctmh #closetomyheart #seaglass #mint #scrapbooking #cardmaking #crafting #colorinspiration #trendycolor

Sea Glass also looks really sharp with metallics, like on the “Best Day Ever” card shown above. The minty hue and the gold give your artwork some vintage flair. If you want to go a more monochromatic route, pair Sea Glass with greens, like the Emerald cardstock on the “Yay” card.

When it comes down to it though, Sea Glass is such a versatile color that you should just try it out in all different kinds of color combinations to see what you like best—you really can’t go wrong!

Finally, we have some great resources to help you replicate our exclusive colors using some other coloring tools: the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers and our watercolors. Take a look to see what combinations of markers or watercolors you can use to fit in with our palette colors—including Sea Glass!

Freshen up your favorite color combinations by adding minty Sea Glass to the mix, and then finish off your artwork with watercolors and markers that perfectly match!
