3 Ways to Create a Vision Board

Last March, we published a blog post with tips for how to create a vision board if you’ve never done it before. When it comes to how to get inspired, you can never have too many ideas, so we’ve put together a few more inspirational vision board ideas to get those wheels turning! 🙂

3 amazing vision board ideas! #closetomyheart #ctmh #visionboard #visionboardideas #diyvisionboard #crafting #paper

Probably the most obvious idea is to start with a basic cork bulletin board. What’s nice about this route is that you can move your vision board wherever you want whenever you want. All you need are straight pins or thumb tacks to attach photos, cards, and other bits of inspiration to your board.

3 amazing vision board ideas! #closetomyheart #ctmh #visionboard #visionboardideas #diyvisionboard #crafting #paper

For a more “outside-the-boxframe” approach, try creating a vision board without the board! 🙂 With some washi tape and a little ingenuity, you can create a vision “board” almost anywhere! We love this option because you can just keep adding to your vision board over time—walls are a huge canvas! Plus, since everything is just held up with washi tape, you can take them down and rearrange them whenever you please.

3 amazing vision board ideas! #closetomyheart #ctmh #visionboard #visionboardideas #diyvisionboard #crafting #paper

Our final idea for today is a nice mix of our two previous ideas: Use a magnetic board. Magnet boards come in all shapes and sizes, but they give you a space to work in that is a bit more defined than your wall. And when working with magnets, it’s super easy to rearrange your board as you see fit, and you don’t put any holes in your artwork and photos.

Which vision board speaks to you? Tell us in the comments below!

Pushing the Envelope: A Letter to Papercrafters

Dear Papercrafters,

When you hear the word “envelope,” you probably think of the plain, white ones used to hold cards, letters, and bills. Well, we’re writing to tell you that, contrary to popular belief, envelopes are not only purposeful but also artful! Today we’re going to expand the envelope’s repertoire by showing you how to incorporate these playful pouches into your artwork.

Let’s start with scrapbooking. With the help of the Cricut® Artfully Sent Collection, you can create miniature envelopes from brightly colored papers to embellish your pages and layouts. Take a look at the three mini envelopes on this page:

Love You

These adorable envelopes are the perfect way to add a sense of familiarity, friendship, and intrigue to any scrapbook page. And wouldn’t it be a fun place to showcase a child’s nickname, a family saying, or a cute quote? We think so! Leave your envelopes closed, open, or a mix of both for visual variety.

Love You mini envelope

Using a double-sided paper, like one from our Paper Fundamentals line, makes for a cute peek-a-boo pattern on the inside of the envelope.

If you don’t have a Cricut® machine, don’t worry! You can still join the envelope fun by gathering up some of those plain, white purposeful envelopes you have lying around the house and upgrading them to a beautiful photo album.

One of our artists created a mini album with 4 ¼” x 5 ½” White Daisy envelopes, and we think the results are simply genius! It’s stowaway scrapbooking with bits and pieces tucked here and there that make the act of thumbing through the pages almost as adventurous as the memories themselves.

Life Album

The envelope acts as a perfect pocket for holding smaller pictures or little notes about the experience. Attaching paper tabs to the back of these keepsakes makes it easy to lift them from the envelope pockets. Plus, it looks pretty cute, too.

Eiffel Tower

Use the plainness of the envelope to your advantage by showcasing stamps or embellishments on its smooth surface. Our artist used a simple yet meaningful stamp and design on this envelope:

Lighthouse

Have we convinced you to try using envelopes to preserve your favorite memories, yet? Whether you’re cutting mini envelopes on your Cricut® machine or repurposing plain card envelopes, we’re confident that you’ll find a way to take the creative reputation of envelopes from drab to fab.

Best wishes in your quest to push the bounds of envelope creativity!

Sincerely,

Close To My Heart

Everyday Inspiration

Sometimes it feels like you’ve maxed out your creativity. You might find yourself staring at your supplies with nothing but crickets chirping in your head. Or maybe you find yourself busily crafting away before realizing that you’ve made yet another variation of the same design.

When a case of “the blahs” strikes, it’s time to take a step back and observe the world around you. There is inspiration everywhere! Here are two ideas you can incorporate into your scrapbooking to freshen it up.

First, take time to smell the roses. No, really! Step into your backyard, walk to your local park, or take a drive up the canyon. Look at the simple yet beautiful objects around you—the veins in a leaf, the shine of an acorn, the shading of a flower petal. Find something that inspires you and take a picture of it, or better yet, arrange several items together. Our studio artists recently took a field trip to inspire themselves in just this way, and they photographed this beauty:

Everyday Inspiration

True to their poetic selves, our artists noticed just how beautifully each of these simple items enhanced the colors, shapes, and textures of the others. Once back at the studio, one artist created this scrapbook page from her photo inspiration:

What a Beautiful Day page

The greens, blues, browns, and reds from the photograph inspired the color scheme of the page. The vivid tones of the Brushed Complements flowers mimic the red cherry, and the leaf shading mirrors the multi-colored leaves in the photograph. The artist also took inspiration from the textures in the photograph: the organic, recycled look of the kraft cardstock resembles the bark.

Here’s a second idea for getting more inspiration: listen to your favorite song or playlist, then take the lyrics that suit your fancy most and incorporate them into your design. Here’s a page inspired by Colbie Caillat’s song, “Try.”

You page

In scrapbooking, there are only so many words you can put onto one page, but lyrics really pack a punch. They capture the emotions of a memorable day or the emotions you feel toward a loved one. You might also interpret the meaning of a song and then express your interpretation in your design through colors, shapes, or patterns. The possibilities are endless!

Now you have the remedy for your creative slump. Plug in those headphones, take a stroll, and get inspired!

Vision Boards: Organizing Your Creative Dreams

For even more vision board ideas, check out our recent Vision Boards 3 Ways blog post!

Typically when we decide it’s time to organize our lives, we think about things like paper stashes, overflowing closets, garages, or the plastic containers stacked precariously in the kitchen. But are all of these things really life? Sure, they play roles in our life, but they’re hopefully not what drives us to get up in the morning.

In the spirit of this month’s call to organization, we decided to tackle a project that’s a little more elusive than cupboards and drawers: organizing your creative intentions through a vision board!

So, what’s a vision board? It’s a place to display images, words, or objects that represent what you want to be and do with your life in one beautiful, central location. Our hope is that this fun project will help you design your vision for your art and your life, all while keeping your thoughts and actions organized enough to accomplish it.

Unknown

Your vision board can become your light at the end of the tunnel during creative blocks. It will keep you motivated to continue heading toward your personal creative oasis!

Now let’s dive into what you’ll need to do to create your vision board! As with all art projects on this blog, we encourage you to use this example as a jumping off point to inspire you in your own creative pursuits. With this project in particular it is especially important for you to take your own, individual spin.

  • Start by spending some time seriously considering what you want this vision board to accomplish. What do you need to remember most in your life? Find a few words or phrases that speak to where you are in life right now. Once you’ve decided what these are, use stamps, Cricut® cuts, Picture My Life™ cards, or simply your own handwriting to express them.
  • Include lists of your creative dreams and goals. Whether that includes a list of techniques you want to learn, albums you want to finish, places you want to visit, or dreams you have for your family, writing it down and reading it every day will help you make the choices necessary to bring it from your imagination into reality.
  • Always stay on the lookout for bits and pieces of your life to add to your vision board. Surrounding yourself with bits and pieces of what you love in this world will be your sunlight on cloudy days. One simple way to do this is through your regular crafting routine. Keep your eyes open for scraps of embellishments such as ribbon, washi tape, or Complements. Cut a little more Shimmer Trim than you ended up needing for your layout? Save it and recycle it for your vision board!
  • Remember that this board is an organization tool. When your to-do list looks as cute as this, you won’t be able to resist taking care of everything on it. Even weekly schedules take on a new light when you dress them up. It’s also a great place to include other items you need to attend to, such as invitations to weddings that you’re planning on making cards or gifts for.
  • Make sure the things you include on your vision board are what you’re naturally drawn to, not what you think you should be drawn to. Remember this process needs to be fun! Let your creativity get playful and choose things out of the ordinary. Dare to do things like stamp and emboss a photo or include random scraps of doodling. The most important thing is not to overthink it; just follow your creative heart!

There you have it: the beginner’s guide to streamlining your creative life. Although our craft rooms may never stay organized, at least our creative visions can stay on track. 😉

We’d love to see how your vision boards turn out! Share your photos of your new creations, or even of boards you’ve created already, on the Close To My Heart Facebook page.

Now go create your vision!

Close To My Heart’s Inspiration Bingo

On this fine January day, we take a break from our regularly scheduled instructional posts to give you a chance to escape your creative routine and produce the sort of artwork that is blissfully yet to be determined.

Close To My Heart’s Inspiration Bingo Board is your launching pad to leap into the artistic unknown, to surrender to the winds of crafting destiny and to see just where they drop you. Think of it as your tentative guide through the jungles of unleashed creativity.

What better way to let inspiration flow through you than by throwing your own plans out the window? The bingo board will guide you to artistic greatness. This is your chance to think outside the box—all it takes is a little nudge from within the box (an entire row of them, actually).

Inspiration-Bingo                                                   To download your own PDF copy, simply click the board!

Here’s how to play: Close your eyes and spin your finger around the board until you feel the draw to put it down. Open your eyes. Which box did your finger land on? Survey your position and then choose to follow either the vertical or horizontal row of the space you landed on. Now heed the guidelines of each box in the row and get crafting!

Your art may not turn out the way you expect, but it will still be beautiful. Why? Because it will be made from the forces of chance, like a magnificent work of nature formed through years of enduring the sporadic and untamed forces of the earth. Ok, maybe not quite that majestic, but you get the idea. Chance is beautiful! See what it can do for you once you’re willing to work with it.

May the (creative) force be with you.

We want to see where Close To My Heart’s Inspiration Bingo takes you! Post a photo of your resulting creation to the Close To My Heart Facebook page, if you would like to share. We’d love to see it.

8 Ways to Boost Your Creative Juices

Creativity is vital. We need it not only solve craft problems, but to solve life problems as well. But sometimes there are days where the well of creativity is as dry as that sanding block sitting on your craft table. Layouts won’t come together, cards just look silly, and everything is a mess. Those days can be rough. We get it. We all have days where we need a little boost in the creativity department.

So we decided to compile a list of things that help us stay creative! We hope these eight tips will provide that extra boost you need when you’re feeling stuck in one of those dreaded creative ruts.

Give yourself the freedom to make mistakes.
Perfect is like a magical rainbow unicorn: you can chase it and believe in it all your life, but you’ll never catch it. Life is too messy for that. Make room for some trial and error and you might just find the beautiful thing that happens when you finally let go of perfect.

Seek inspiration.
Albert Einstein once said, “Creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.” Seek inspiration from your surroundings. The secret recipe for creativity is simply finding new ways to combine existing ideas.

Don’t compare yourself to others, but keep them in mind.
Measuring your success against others will leave you feeling unsatisfied and unhappy. Don’t worry about “measuring up,” just do your best. Treat others as your imaginary audience and focus your energy on making something they will enjoy!

Set goals and commit.
Sometimes a deadline is the only thing that can get you out of a creative rut. Set reasonable goals and reachable deadlines and commit to them. They just might provide that extra little push you need to get up and moving again.

Get your blood pumping.
If you feel like your brain is stuck, then try moving your legs instead! The mental benefits of a quiet evening walk, a few jumping jacks, or even running up the stairs are well worth the sweat.

Develop a willingness to practice.
If you expect to succeed without practicing, you will be disappointed. When you give yourself permission to practice, you create room to make mistakes and time to improve.

Be open to changes in the plan.
Welcome surprises. They are often better solutions in disguise.

Believe in you.
You are the only person that has complete control over you. You can use that power to make yourself into your worst enemy or your greatest cheerleader—it’s your call.

Now go forth and use your creativity to create your art and to create your life!

We believe in you.

How do you stay creative? We’d love to hear your ideas in the comments!

P.S. Pin the image below to your Pinterest page to help others feel creatively inspired, too!
