We’ve got an extra special treat for you today! We’ve paired up with Sunny Hintze, owner of Sunny Days Cakes and winner of Food Network’s “Cake Wars,” to bring you some inspiration for throwing a unicorn-themed birthday party!

Unicorn birthday cakes are all the rage right now, and we currently have a unicorn-themed paper collection called Little Dreamer…so it was a match made in heaven! 🙂

Sunny took inspiration from our Little Dreamer collection to create her incredible cake: The colors match our Little Dreamer color palette, the multi-colored horn looks just like the horns on our little unicorns, and she even created edible pieces that look like our Complements! See the little banners and glitter hearts and flowers? It’s amazing!

To send this cake over the moon, she used Mod Podge to add Little Dreamer papersComplements, and gems to the board used for the base of the cake, and finished it off by wrapping the edge with our white & gold ribbon.

And if you think this cake looks magical, let us tell you, it tasted magical, too! An amazing cake is absolutely essential for any birthday party, and Sunny hit this one out of the park!

What’s another party essential? Great decorations, of course! To mix up your banner game, try layering a circle banner above a pennant banner, like we did here. This works especially well when you have a large blank wall to decorate.

Another party tip is to give your young guests something to play with that ties into the theme of the party, like these magical wands. Simply cut stars out of white glitter paper using your Cricut® machine, and then hot glue them onto long sucker sticks with some ribbons. The soft colors from our Whimsy ribbon pack make a great match for the Little Dreamer collection.

An easy way to add some accents to your party set-up is to frame our pocket cards. The Little Dreamer paper packet comes with two sheets of 3” x 4” and 4” x 6” pocket cards that you can cut apart for pocket scrapbooking. Framing a few of these cards is an easy way to add cute accents to your table, and they already perfectly match your other party décor—it’s a win-win!

Whatever goodies you choose to make available, try adding cute little tags to your jars and containers. You can label them if you have multiple foods for guests to choose from, and really, tags just make everything a bit more magical! 😊

And as one last final tip, spice up plain paper treat baggies with some patterned paper and matching Complements and gems! To make your baggies look especially polished, attach zip strips to the tops of the baggies.

What other tips do you have for throwing a stellar birthday party? Tell us in the comments below!

Sunny Hintze is located in Eagle Mountain, Utah. She is also going to launch a line of unicorn cake kits soon—how awesome is that? For more information about Sunny Days Cakes and her unicorn cake kits, visit her Facebook page.

Paper Halloween Village

It’s already October (oh how time flies!), which means Halloween is right around the corner! If you love creating your own holiday decorations, you’re going to LOVE this two-dimensional paper Halloween village.

Create your own paper Halloween village! #ctmh #closetomyheart #diyhalloweendecor #halloweencrafts #cricut #halloweendecorations #crafting

All we needed to create this spooky village were a few shapes from our Cricut® collections, including our new Cricut® City Sidewalks digital collection. Yep—those houses with the white front doors are actually from a Christmas Cricut® collection! It’s amazing what a little creativity can create!

In addition to the houses, we used our Cricut® collections to create all sorts of fun details, like black cats and Jack-o’-lanterns…

…and Black Widow spiders, oh my!

To give the village an antiqued look, we sponged the edges of many pieces with ink, like these tombstones. This is also a great way to add dimension any time you’re working mainly with layers of paper.

We think this village would be adorable on a mantle or entry table, but there are all sorts of places you could display something like this! Be creative!

You can see the Cricut® shapes we used for our village below. Use them to create your own paper Halloween village or other decorations inspired by these shapes. Show us what you create on social media by using the hashtag #ctmhhalloween.

Have a spooktacular time crafting!  🙂

Putting the “Shower” in Baby Shower

April showers bring May flowers—and though April may be winding down, some “showers” happen all year round. We’re talking about baby showers of course! What better way to celebrate the promise of new life than with a shower-themed baby shower? This post is just bursting with great artwork ideas for making your next shower a truly inspirational one.

Every good party starts with a stellar invitation. There’s nothing quite like getting fun snail mail, especially if it’s a handmade invitation!

The umbrella and cloud shapes you see are all courtesy of the amazing Cricut® Artistry collection—but the invitation is just the beginning! We used many of the same shapes to make perfectly coordinating decorations that we know you are just going to love:

There are so many fun elements of this party to talk about, but let’s start with the banner. Donning cute mini umbrellas and bright springtime colors, our “Oh Baby” banner helps set the stage for showering the mother-to-be. Above the table, we created a cloud of balloons with paper raindrops streaming down. Take a closer look:

These 3-D shapes are simple to create with your Cricut® machine and create such a unique backdrop. We used a similar technique in this video showing how to make a sweet baby mobile. They’ll be the talk of the party!

Of course we want the food to play into our theme, which is why we went with these white, fluffy cupcakes. And the cloud-embellished paper straws behind add some fun to our jars of lemonade.

A “cloud” of fresh baby’s breath fits right in, and we just had to embellish with these delicate little butterflies.

When the festivities are over, send your guests home with a raincheck—oh, we mean a party favor! A colorful paper pouch filled with goodies or gifts is just the thing. We chose a pattern from one of our newest paper packets, Calypso, which will be available starting May 1!

We know there must be lots of other great ways to tie in the rain shower theme to a baby shower—or to other parties, too! Let the comments pour in! 😉

From Jeanette: My Christmas Tree

Everything about Christmas fills me with wonder—its sparkling decorations, cheery music, and gift giving. The most wonderful part though is spending time with my loved ones, and I wish I could spend time with each one of you this Christmas, too!

Though we are apart, I’d still like to invite you into my home by showing you something special—my Christmas tree! Here are two pictures, one before it was decorated and one with all the trimmings:
Celebrate Christmas with us at Close To My Heart! #Christmas #ctmh #CloseToMyHeart #merrychristmas #christmastreeCelebrate Christmas with us at Close To My Heart! #Christmas #ctmh #CloseToMyHeart #merrychristmas #christmastree
I think Christmas trees are simply beautiful, and it’s magical watching a plain tree transform into a handcrafted work of art. Which decoration is your favorite? I can never decide between the gold striped ribbon, the pearl strands, the glittery red leaves, and the delicate glass ornaments. And of course there’s the golden star on top!
Celebrate Christmas with us at Close To My Heart! #Christmas #ctmh #CloseToMyHeart #merrychristmas #christmastree
This is one of my favorite Christmas traditions. When I look at my tree, it fills me with joy and reminds me of the beauty in this world. All the troubles of life fade away with the glistening of those Christmas tree lights.

I hope these photographs light a smile on your face, and I hope your own holiday traditions bring you and your family closer together. Most of all, I hope you feel peace, happiness, and love this holiday season.

Merry Christmas, my dear friends.

Love,

Jeanette

Paper Pinecone Parade

Bring the woods into your home this holiday season by creating your own whimsical paper pinecones. It’s a project that looks difficult, but is secretly super simple. In this post, we’ll show you how to make your own paper pinecones with a festive Christmas twist. Once you’re done, these lovely paper creations can be displayed in a basket on your dining room table or hung as ornaments from your Christmas tree. For a more unique usage, try draping them from your doorknobs or adding them to Christmas gifts for a personalized touch that is sure to impress and delight!

So put your Christmas music on, pull out your paper, and let’s get started.

What You’ll Need:
(Makes 1 Pinecone)
2 – 12″ x 12″ sheets of B&T Duos™ paper (We used X7187B Yuletide Carol.)
½” metal pins
1 – 2 13/16″ x 3 7/8″ styrofoam egg
Z679 Liquid Glass
Z1937 Score Board
Z1783 SureCut™ Deluxe Craft Paper Trimmer

1. Choose a pattern of B&T paper to use for your pinecone. It’s important to use B&T because it will be much easier to fold than regular cardstock.   2. Next, cut two 1 ¼” circles from the corner of one of the sheets of B&T.   3. Using the scoreboard, score all remaining paper (including the paper you cut the circles from) every ¾” both vertically and horizontally to create a pattern of scored ¾” squares across both B&T papers.   4. Now cut all the scored B&T into 1 ½” x 1 ½” squares. This means you will have four ¾” scored squares on each cut 1 ½” x 1 ½” paper square.

5. Fold all the 1 ½” x 1 ½” squares in half and then in half again in order to form a ¾” folded paper square.  6.  On the top point of the egg, adhere one of the paper circles using liquid glass and straight pins. Keep the pins close to the outside of the circle so they can be easily concealed.   7. Layer the first five folded paper squares around the paper circle, adhering with pins and drops of liquid glass. Point squares toward the center of the top of the egg and insert pins at the bottom point of the square.

8. Continue layering folded paper squares, working in a circular pattern around the egg. Make sure you cover the raw edges of the preceding layer with each succeeding layer.   9. Once you have reached the bottom of the egg, finish it off by adhering the remaining 1 ¼” circle of paper with liquid glass to cover the raw edges and pins at the bottom.   10. Revel in the beauty of your paper creation.

Nice work! You might just give Mother Nature a run for her money.
