Easter is one of the most joyous holiday seasons of the year that is often overshadowed, if not overlooked, by our noisy world. It’s a time full of courage, hope, and promise for those with faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In preparation for this commemorative time, we are highlighting two meaningful stamp sets from our January–March catalog along with a few beautiful cards and a scrapbook page we made using them!

The first stamp set we’re looking at is called God Is Love and it is also offered with a coordinating set of Thin Cuts. Thin Cuts are metal dies that are used for cutting shapes out of paper when paired with a die-cutting machine.

God Is Love Stamp + Thin Cuts

The words and designs shown in black represent what you can stamp with our clear polymer stamps and the other shapes you see above are what can be cut with the Thin Cuts.

Using the God Is Love dies paired with a few simple techniques, this lovely scripture card came together with so much ease! One of the first things you might notice is that we didn’t use a lot of patterned paper. We only used one, to be exact, and very little of it at that. The intention was to focus on and not distract from the scripture message that takes up two thirds of the card’s front. The message was stamped in Wisteria ink, a color very similar to the Periwinkle cardstock on which it was stamped, creating a warm, almost tone-on-tone effect. The sentiment is resting on a bar of Ballerina cardstock. The bar below the sentiment is visually important because it creates a place for our eyes to rest after reading this passage, which is longer than typical for a card front. Finally, the card is embellished with gold accents and beautiful die-cut flowers, so that we have something pretty to look at as our eyes rest.

For added dimension, the edges of the layered petal pieces of the center flower were sponged with Ballerina ink, creating the illusion that the flower is at the forefront, when in reality it was attached in the same way, and without any foam tape, as was the second flower.

The God Is Love stamp and Thin Cuts set also comes in especially handy when you’re ready to scrapbook those meaningful religious themed memories!

Just like in the card, this layout was kept free of too many distracting patterns to really focus on the message and feeling behind the day these memories were made. It is still full of beautiful techniques, like the sponging of color in the background that ties the elements in the foreground together, leading the eye from one part of the layout to the next.

In this case, the flower petals were die cut from two different cardstock colors, White Daisy and Ballerina, adding to the flow and visual guide created by the ethereal Wisteria ink in the background. Our eyes begin at the top right, are guided left through the photos, matted on restful solid cardstock colors, and then the journaling, continuing to and stopping at the beautifully decorated cross on the bottom right of the page.

We chose to color the floral designs on the cross with alcohol markers, but color pencils or watercolor paint would be just as beautiful!

As a bonus note, the colors we chose for this card and layout may seem thematic for Easter, but if you’re also familiar with color theory, you will see that this card is made up of double complementary colors. (If you aren’t familiar with color theory, or would like to learn more, revisit a few of our past posts, here: For the Love of Color: A New Color Wheel!)

This next stamp set we absolutely love for Easter and for any time you may need to provide a friend with uplifting, faith filled comfort, is the I Am the Way stamp set.

We got bolder with this next card and used a good amount of patterned paper and a dark (Sapphire) cardstock. To ensure the stamped scripture wouldn’t get lost in our paper choices, we made it literally stand out by heat embossing it in gold! To heat emboss, you must use a clear ink that is designed for embossing, like VersaMark™ ink, and dust it with an embossing powder (we used Princess Gold). Once you clear off any powder that is not stuck to the embossing ink, you set the image with a heat tool that will literally melt the powder into the ink. The result is a stamped image that raises off the page!

Less of a technique, but perhaps a trick that we carry up our sleeves, are the acrylic stars that we used to embellish this card. These little golden stars started out white and were colored with the Liquid Gold metallic paint markers. We offer white acrylic stars, and other shapes, in our catalog for the express reason that white acrylic is easy to color and therefore match to the needs of your projects!

The taller, “I am the way…” scripture from this set is sized to fit on the front of the trendy slimline-style cards.

Springtime Crafting for Easter!

With Easter right around the corner, it’s time for some of our favorite springtime traditions! From egg decoration and hunts to leaving out a basket for the bunny and spending treasured time with family and friends, it’s a perfect time to get crafting and preserve those delightful memories when they come along.

Today, we’ve got some fantastic Easter-themed cards and a two-page 8½” x 11″ scrapbook layout to help you get your creative wheels turning as you think of ways to spread your Easter joy and commemorate your sweet experiences during this beautiful time of year. Let’s dive in!

For all our card makers out there, it’s a prime time to make gorgeous cards for the dear ones in your life. Our selection of adorable stamp + Thin Cuts designed specifically for your Easter crafting needs ranges from celebratory religious sentiments to fun bunnies, eggs, flowers, and birds.

The Easter season can also be an ideal time to express your love for those around you with a heartfelt scrapbook layout. To maximize both your time and stories, consider creating 8½” x 11″ pages to record your special Easter memories. Creating a smaller layout like this one can be a great way to ensure that your stories are told without cutting into time spent with loved ones.

As you can see here, a layout doesn’t have to be intricate or over the top to provide a memorable backdrop for your favorite photos and stories. layout requires relatively few steps when it comes to cutting, stamping, and embellishing.

For instance, the border and background pattern seen here can be created in minutes with just a few pen strokes and some quick tone-on-tone stamping. These elements come together to create a finished look while saving you time and effort.

Looking for something a bit more challenging to stretch your creative abilities? Consider creating a fun title accent like this one, using a sponge dauber and a few of your favorite ink pads to selectively apply color to your stamp, resulting in a multihued single stamp image! You can then add more color and shading as desired using watercolor pencils.

With a wealth of creative possibilities available for Easter crafts, we hope you’ll find these tips and techniques helpful as you celebrate this wonderful time of year!

What Easter traditions do you celebrate, and how would you scrapbook them? Leave a comment below to let us know!

Quick & Easy Watercolor Techniques!

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking

Great artwork is built on the inclusion of many small elements, all coming together for a stunning end result! Watercolor is an incredibly easy and effective way to boost the overall aesthetic of your artwork, resulting in a truly professional appearance while still keeping it uniquely “you.”

When most people hear “watercolor,” they may picture intricate images painted free-hand by a skilled and experienced artist. Today, however, we’re going to show you a variety of different ways you can easily apply watercolor techniques to your artwork, some of which may even surprise you! Watercolor is a skill anyone can practice and use to up the ante in their own artwork, and the techniques we’re sharing with you are great for beginners and experts alike!

All of the artwork we’ll be showing you today was made using papers, stickers, and embellishments from our beautiful Daisy Meadows collection.

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking #hellospring

This bright paper suite lends itself well to watercolor and is a great starting point for anyone who may be new to this beautiful medium!

Artistic splattering is a great way to break up a plain background, and it’s incredibly quick and easy to add to any artistic project!

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking #yourtimetobloom #spring #Easter

To create these fun splatters, take a wet waterbrush, pick up some paint from your watercolor paint palette, and gently tap the brush on top of your index finger, holding it over the general area where you’d like the splatters to land.

(Tip: Use a piece of scratch paper to cover any parts of the page you don’t want to be splattered.)

You can also see this technique reflected in this Easter-themed layout from the Daisy Meadows Scrapbooking Workshop Kit.

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking #Easter #Easterwishes

Here, we’ve combined the splattering technique with some light stamping and complemented it all with a few small stickers and Daisy Meadows Dots. When these elements are combined, you go from a plain white background to a multi-textured one!

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking #newbeginnings #spring

Another way to incorporate watercolor into your artwork is to create a painted border around the perimeter of your scrapbook pages.

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking

To create a painted border like this one, lightly make a few long strokes around the edges of the page, taking care to not let your hand wander toward the center. A simple watercolor element like this is a wonderful way to brighten up a modest background!

The next technique on our list shows you how to use watercolor paints to create eye-catching elements and accents in the foreground of your projects. In the page pictured below, we used watercolor paints to add soft color not only to the floral accents by the photos, but also for the bright swash in the title.

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking

This vibrant addition draws the eye to the title, allowing for a natural, flowing progression as viewers take in the rest of the page.

(Tip: To achieve a flawless swash effect, add the watercolor paint and let it dry completely before stamping. This way, you can adjust the color to get it just right, and you’ll avoid smearing the ink on the stamped image.)

For the delicate floral accents, you can easily achieve a gentle fade by concentrating the paintbrush along the outer edges of the stamped image, creating an outline. Then, clean the brush, wet it, and softly brush the color toward the center of the image. If watercolor paints aren’t your preferred watercolor medium, this effect can also be achieved using watercolor pencils.

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking

Another fun way to up your watercolor game is to play around with various color saturations and pigment shades.

For a more pigmented effect on your initial coat, consider using a dry brush to pick up your wet paint. Wet bristles will pick up less paint, resulting in a lighter pigment, so starting with a wet paint well and a dry brush will allow you to achieve a darker color right from the get-go!

You can also adjust the color saturation as needed, but this process takes a bit of patience. To get the best results, wait for the first layer of paint to dry fully before going in for a second coat.

For a more abstract approach to watercolor painting, consider using a smooshing technique!

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking #sweetspring

Like you’d do with a swash, you’ll want to apply your watercolor pigments to the paper before stamping. To add a smushed watercolor element, apply your watercolor paint to the page or accent in a more abstract form.

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking

Once you’ve applied your color, you’ll take a plastic bag and smoosh it on top of the paper where the paint has been applied, mixing the colors together. This results in a beautifully blended texture, which will be ready for you to stamp on top of once it’s fully dry.

(Tip: You can save the acetate wrapping from a new stamp pad, or any other new product, and use that for your smooshing!)

One last technique we’ll share with you today is stencil painting. This technique is one of the easiest things you can do to add watercolor to your scrapbooking pages or cards.

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking #springisintheair

This technique is also a fantastic way to express your own unique creativity, as you can cut your own stencil patterns for this watercolor element! To create your own stencil, cut a design into cardstock using your favorite cutting machine. If you’d like to reuse your stencil, cut your design on Stencil Sheets, so you can design and create your own stencils and use them for multiple projects! (For pre-designed stencils, check these out!)

When you use a stencil to add watercolor to your artwork, use strips of washi tape to hold it in place while you paint over it. This will ensure a more uniform appearance with fewer unwanted smears.

Watercolor Techniques #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhdaisymeadows #watercolor #watercolour #waterbrush #watercolorpencils #watercolourpencils #watercolortechniques #watercolourtechniques #scrapbooking #cardmaking

Once your stencil is secured in place with washi tape, use your waterbrush to gently wash over the stencil. This technique may result in some light bleeding, rougher edges, or blotching, which gives it a beautiful, perfectly imperfect look!

Easter Treat Bags

Egg-stra Special Treats #ctmh #closetomyheart #eggstraspecial #treatbag #Easter #Eastertreat #diyEaster #EastercandyWith Easter just around the corner, we came up with a couple of really cute treat bags for you to make and share with all of those people you love to celebrate with!

Egg-stra Special Treats #ctmh #closetomyheart #eggstraspecial #treatbag #Easter #Eastertreat #diyEaster #Eastercandy

Take a look at how easy this egg-stra special treat comes together:

STEP 1. CUTTING YOUR PAPER

egg-treat-bag-paper

This project uses a simple base shape that folds up into the treat bag shown above. To help you easily replicate this shape, we created a Cricut Design Space™ file, https://design.cricut.com/#/design/139208505. If you do not have access to Design Space, these little eggs are still doable with a little bit of ingenuity and scissors! 😉 The oval shapes forming the eggs are 3½” tall and 3¼” wide and are connected by a 1″ x 1¼” rectangle. We also recommend cutting out a few small strips of paper to add sentiments and decoration to your finished treat. The strips we cut are ¾” x 3¾” and ¾” x 3½”.

STEP 2. SCORING AND STAMPING

With a Bone Folder, score the short sides of the connecting rectangle to create the base for your egg to stand on. Then, flip the cardstock over and stamp on the top oval. Using a tone-on-tone stamping technique will create a subtle and delicate pattern.

STEP 3. PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Attach a treat to the inside of the wrapper. Fold your egg and attach the top of the two ovals where they meet with adhesive. Lastly, embellish the front as much or as little as you wish. We added the two small strips of paper that we had you cut in step 1, after stamping one with a sentiment, and attached a small ribbon bow with a glue dot.

Pretty simple, quick, and adorable!

Want to try your hands on one that’s got a little more technique to it? Show some BUNNY just how much you love them with one of these:

Egg-stra Special Treats #ctmh #closetomyheart #eggstraspecial #treatbag #Easter #Eastertreat #diyEaster #Eastercandy

STEP 1. PAPER PIECES
For this second treat bag, you will start out with a 3″ x 10½” piece of paper for your base. (We made each one of our bases a little differently, some with patterned papers and some with cardstock.) You will also need a White Daisy 2½” x 3¾” rectangle, a 2½” x ¾” strip cut from patterned paper, and a 2″ light colored cardstock circle. (If you’d like that extra bit of detail that you see around the edges of our White Daisy rectangle piece, cut your shape with a Stitched Rectangle Frames die.)

STEP 2. CUTTING THE BASE.
In order to achieve that fancy top that you see at the top of our bags, we used one of our Fancy Tags Thin Cuts and partially cut into our paper.

Egg-stra Special Treats #ctmh #closetomyheart #eggstraspecial #treatbag #Easter #Eastertreat #diyEaster #Eastercandy #cuttlebug #fancytags

You do not want to cut out the entire shape of the tag. (Otherwise all you’ll have is a tag.) Line up your die as close to the top of the base paper, parallel to the edges. Place the top plate of your die-cutting machine only over the portion of the die that you wish to cut. In this case, place the plate over as much of the tag as you like, without including the bottom. Once you run it through your machine, you should have a cut piece of paper like the one you see here.

Use a paper trimmer (or scissors) to continue the side cuts all the way down to the bottom of the base paper.

STEP 3. SCORING THE BASE

Using the pattern above as a guide, score the three dashed lines.

STEP 4. STAMPING

Egg-stra Special Treats #ctmh #closetomyheart #eggstraspecial #treatbag #Easter #Eastertreat #diyEaster #Eastercandy #sweetleaf #stamping

On your White Daisy cardstock piece, start by stamping the grass along the bottom. Once your grass is set, move on to stamping the Easter eggs.

Egg-stra Special Treats #ctmh #closetomyheart #eggstraspecial #treatbag #Easter #Eastertreat #diyEaster #Eastercandy #pixie #peach #lemon #lilac #mint

STEP 5. PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Attach all of the pieces to the base, as shown, and embellish with a ribbon bow. Lastly, add a treat to the inside and then fold the base around it at the score lines. Close it off with adhesive where the top of the front and back meet, and you’re done!

Happy Easter!

Even though we knew it was coming, as it does every year, spring is sneaking up on us fast! Technically it won’t be spring for another couple weeks, so there’s still time to pull out and sort through all of those brightly colored decorations. (Phew!)

And because spring is all about new beginnings, we have a few fun things in store for you to add to your stash! Just keep reading! 😉

First, we want to show you how to dress up a wreath you may already have with a fun pennant banner made using our Block Alphabet Thin Cuts dies (which are 25% off through the end of the month as part of our Die-namite! sale).

hello spring #ctmh #closetomyheart #hello #spring #pennant #banner #wreath #thin #cuts #diecuts #thincuts #dies #alpha #block #letters #alphabet #home #decor #decoration #decorating #diy #easter #hesirisen #myredeemerlives

If you look closely, you’ll see that we layered each of our letters with silver foil. Using our Thin Cuts, we cut our sentiment out twice, once out of White Daisy cardstock and then again out of silver foil paper. The silver foil letters were cut in half and then attached to the White Daisy using an adhesive runner. Then, we attached the letters with thin 3-D foam tape onto individual pennants that would later form our banner. To make the pennants, we simply cut 1½” x 3¾” rectangles and dovetailed one of the ends.

Attach the pennants to white twine using a hot glue gun to spell out your words—one word per strand of twine. Make sure to leave enough twine on the ends to tie the banners to the wreath.

You can make a banner like this one for pretty much any occasion just by changing the sentiment. From welcoming a new season, to holidays, or birthdays—the Block Alphabet Thin Cuts give you the tools for spelling out whatever it is you want to celebrate in style!

And since we are talking seasonal décor, we have a special treat for those of you who’ve made it this far: two FREE printables for the upcoming Easter season.

With April a skip and a hop away, it’s time to start thinking about Easter crafting! One fun project is to make cute name tags for your family’s baskets—and with our Cricut® collections, you can get adorable tags in a jiffy!

The daffodils, banners, and letters on these tags come from the latest of our Cricut® collections—Flower Market. The tag bases themselves comes from our Cricut® Artistry collection, which is filled with lots of other basic shapes for crafting. Combine the two collections, and you get a whole new world of possibilities!

This quick project adds a personal touch to your Easter baskets, and you can use the tags time and time again!

4 Crafts to Do Before Easter Comes Hopping

Today! It’s today! Spring has arrived in our little corner of the world, and we couldn’t be happier about it. What’s your favorite part of spring? For us, the Easter holiday is a major highlight. For so very many reasons, this holiday brings joy and giddiness to the hearts of folks big and small.

In preparation for the holiday, we’ve pulled out some of our favorite Easter stamps to create some truly egg-cellent projects.

Happy Easter Canvas Trio
This canvas trio makes a cozy Easter-season wall piece. Who can resist this gorgeous Easter lily image in combination with the letters from the Hopscotch Alphabet stamp set (E1028)? We’ve added some flora to these versatile canvases to portray the beautiful message of new life that Easter is all about. To achieve the beautiful colors on these pieces, we turned first to our ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers. Then we used the blending pen to pick up ink from various Exclusive Inks™ pads to apply some softer tones.

4 ½” x 4 ½” Chick Card
With a stamp this precious, we couldn’t help but create a truly adorable card. We once again used the blending pen to add color from our chosen Exclusive Inks™ pads. Don’t you love the shading spectrum you can achieve this way? This little chick has got to be the cutest one in town!

Easter Egg Drawstring Bags
My Creations™ muslin drawstring bags will delight anyone you give them to! We stamped the fancy egg image directly onto our bag using black StazOn™ ink. Once dry, we used an array of Exclusive Inks™ pads and the blending pen to “dye” our egg. We love that every stamped egg can be a unique work of art all its own! Without the headache of vinegar dyes and cartons full of hard-boiled eggs, you’ve got yourself a picturesque (and nonperishable) final product.

Easter Stamp Artwork

Before gifting your creation, place a small surprise inside and attach a simple tag. We used our Cricut® Artiste cartridge, hand-stamped an image on the tag, and once again used the blending pen to apply bold pops of color that invoke the beauties of blossoming spring.

Decorative Carrots
You’ll never guess the secret ingredients we used to make this delicious bunny bait: The Scaredy Cat and Chalk It Up paper packets! Who would’ve dreamed these papers could be used for Easter? It’s just more proof of how our B&T papers can be turned into fun 3-D home décor pieces in a hop. And why not sweeten the deal by stuffing them with jelly beans?

Easter will be here before you can say chocolate bunny, but there’s no need to scramble for last-minute ideas. Be prepared for the coming Easter holiday by ordering these Close To My Heart products today!
