Scrapbooking with Tutti Frutti: Here’s the Scoop!

Scrapbooking is a fun and creative way to preserve memories. Today we’re highlighting the techniques that we used in creating this delightful “Here’s the scoop!” page.

This bright and fun, summer themed page came together with scraps of paper, stickers, and a shaker window that is easier to assemble than it might look. Let’s start by talking about the base page and build our way up from there.

Our base page is a 12″ x 12″ patterned paper from the Tutti Frutti collection. Layered on top of that patterned paper, creating a framed canvas for us to work on, is an 11″ x 11″ piece of Capri cardstock and a 10¾” x 10¾” piece of White Daisy cardstock. Both of these sheets are included in the Tutti Frutti coordinating cardstock.

Choosing the right colors and designs for a scrapbook page couldn’t be simpler than when you are working with one of our paper collections, where all of that coordinating work has already been done for you. Our patterned papers, cardstock, and embellishments are designed and paired together so you can focus on the more important part of scrapbooking—telling and preserving your story.

The paper pieced background we built for this scrapbook page is a great way to use a lot of different colors and patterns together. It’s a great idea for any project where you just have too many favorite designs to choose from or you have scraps left over from other projects. All of the strips we used are different lengths, but they’ve all been made the same width (ours are ½” wide). When attaching the strips, we made a point of not lining up the breaks, much like a brick or tiled wall. Working with ½” wide strips also opens the option of incorporating zip strips into the design. (Zip strips are the ½” additional accent paper along the top of each sheet of patterned paper.)

As you build a background like this one, add some visual movement by not completing all of the rows of paper strips along the top or bottom, and from opposite sides. Notice how we started the top rows along the right side of the page and the bottom rows along the left side of the page. As we scan the page from left to right (the way the eye naturally looks at these types of things), our eyes are drawn to the bottom left, guided to the journaling, and then to the photo.

Our eyes will naturally rest on the photo because it’s matted on a solid cardstock color, giving our brains a chance to take a break from the more active elements of the page.

The circle shaker window is one of those active elements on this page that helps draws attention to the photo. A shaker window was an easy way to include a layer of playfulness that our theme called for. And the truth is, with the right set of materials, shaker windows are not hard to make, at all!

Here’s what you need:

Circle Shaker Window Thin Cuts
Circle Shaker Window Foam + Acetate
Patterned paper or cardstock for the base and frame (we used Lemonade and Mint cardstock)
Filling of your choice (we used Tutti Frutti mini shapes and Silver loose sequins)

Assembling a shaker window:

1.   Die cut a base and frame out of paper, using the shaker window dies.

2.   Carefully pull the circle foam tape off the backing sheet it comes on and attach it to the perimeter of your paper base.

3.   Add your choice of filling to the center of your base. Don’t add too much, so there is enough room for movement once the shaker is complete.

4.   Expose the adhesive on the top of the circle foam tape  and attach the circle acetate.

5.   Complete the window by adding the die cut frame, covering the foam tape.

6.   Attach the shaker window to your project!

While you may be channeling your inner artist to create scrapbook pages, remember that it doesn’t have to be difficult!  Just take one scoop of whimsy, one scoop of coordinating products, and you’ve got a recipe for enough creative fun to help you accomplish the most important part of all: preserving your memories!

National Scrapbooking Month: One Final Taste

This month has been a rainbow explosion of Taste of Summer artwork! We’ve highlighted creations on the blog, our Facebook page, our Instagram account, and on this special Pinterest board. Sticky Boy even got in on the fun! It’s been a blast.

There are still a few days left to order the sensational Taste of Summer paper packet and stamp set before these fruits retire for good. But before we say goodbye to this beautiful duo, we want to leave you with one last burst of fruity cuteness.Unknown-8
Our favorite thing about this page is how seamlessly all of the colors are interwoven throughout its various elements. The pops of yellow in the girl’s shirt also appear in the citrus slices and the papers. Purple appears anywhere from the light splatters on the white cardstock to the glitter gems and the Shimmer Trim.

So cute! This page is further proof that these papers and stamps are always delicious together, no matter what kind of fruit salad creation you whip up.

And with that, we are officially signing off from Taste of Summer. We hope you relish these last two days. Thank you for your social media participation! We’ve loved seeing all of the beautiful things you can do with these products. It’s been berry sweet. 🙂

From Our Garden to Yours

When you see them on the cover of Seasonal Expressions 2 you will immediately fall in love. They have yet to sprout in your garden, but they can be popping up all over your craft room. Oh, the sweet, sweet flavor of STRAWBERRIES!

Seasonal Expressions 2 Strawberries

If you’ve got a green thumb and want the secrets of our papercrafted berry bliss, read on to satisfy your craving with these simple instructions:

1. Cut out the pieces.
Our adorable Paper Fundamentals make a great start for this project. The UV-coated patterns add a lifelike glossy sheen to the finished berries, making them look like they’ve just been picked from your strawberry patch.

The shapes are simple to cut and assemble using our Cricut® cartridges. For all the specifics, see the handy recipe below. We started with the strawberry box and topper from the Artiste cartridge, and then added a little extra greenery from the Art Philosophy cartridge to complete our fresh-off-the-vine look.

2. Ink the edges.
Our white-core cardstock is just the look we want . . . most of the time. In this case, we want nothing but bright, red juiciness. Ink up those edges with a color that matches your paper of choice. Here we’ve capitalized on Cranberry with a sponge dauber. We’ve also taken our Topiary leaves to the next level with some inking on the edges—it’s more magical than Miracle-Gro®!

3. Fold the panels.
You’ll find in your Cricut® Artiste carrying case some handy assembly instructions to guide you as you put together many of our Artiste projects. Our strawberries are found on page 53.

Fold along the helpful tic marks to make individual panels. There’s no need to score beforehand—in fact, doing so would take away from the curvaceous shape of the fruit. Steer clear of sharp creases.

4. Assemble the strawberries.
To construct that succulent strawberry shape, first secure the side tab with Glue Dots™ to create the “point” of the berry. Once that’s in place, pull up all other panels one by one, rounding rather than folding over, and secure on top with Glue Dots™.

5. Ink the remaining white space.
There’s that white core again, peeking through your tic marks! Take an inky sponge dauber to those remaining white spaces to make this berry extra convincing.

6. Assemble leafy top and attach.
Shape some of your inked leaves by hand to give them dimension, then layer them on top of each other to your liking, attaching with Glue Dots™. Attach your blossom (a beautiful touch, don’t you think?) to your leaf cluster, then attach the entire topper to your little red beauty with (yep, you got it) Glue Dots™.

Ta-da! There you have a summertime favorite so realistic it’ll make mouths water. If these aren’t a sweet idea, we don’t know what is.

Enjoy your harvest!
