If you haven’t perused the new Close To My Heart Core Products Catalog, you are missing out on some pretty amazing crafting tools! A few of our newest additions really shake things up in the world of shaker windows—Have a look!
Use these top-of-the-line thin metal dies to cut the window, frame, and confetti for a shaker window, then pair them with their coordinating foam and acetate to complete the dimensional design.
Another of our new sets of dies is a beautiful Window Thin Cuts set that allows you to create a decorative window scene. When you pair these dies with the Square Shaker Window Foam + Acetate (also new!), you can fill it with loose sequins or some of our bitty beads to create the full “shaker” effect.
A fun tip that we want to share with you today is how simple it is to create an actual see-through window using your shaker window Thin Cuts.
To create a see-through window, you will need to cut a shape on your card base that is smaller than the coordinating overlay and acetate, otherwise your window will just fall through the hole on your project. (You will also need two frames and two pieces of acetate, one for each side.)
If you look at the circle, star, or heart shaker window Thin Cuts sets, you will notice that these each come with dies that cut confetti. These dies are intentionally designed in the shape of their corresponding sets.
If you use the larger of the two confetti-cutting dies to cut the window on your card base, the overlaying acetate and frame will fit perfectly on top to seal any shaking elements in place!
Once your window is cut on the card base, attach an acetate sheet to the back and frame it with a die-cut overlay.
Flip the card back over to the front and add the 3-D foam around the perimeter of your window. Use this 3-D foam as a wall to hold any confetti, loose sequins, or bitty beads you wish to add, and then attach the second piece of acetate and frame. And done! That’s how easy it is to build a see-through shaker window!

Halloween may look a bit different this year than what we’re used to, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have some fun! To keep the tradition of offering treats where treats are due, we’ve designed a few tags in Cricut Design Space™ using our festive Got Candy? paper collection and we’re sharing our designer’s file with you free, here!
The spooky themes of the Got Candy? patterned papers and stickers paired with the versatile shapes of our Art Philosophy Cricut® collection are a scream-of-a-treat all on their own! To access our free file, you will need your own access to the shapes of the Art Philosophy collection. If you do not own this Cricut® collection and would like to make the tags from this project, contact your Close To My Heart Maker to learn how.
Four of the seven pieces are tags that come together quickly with a few cut shapes, stickers, and some ribbon. If you take a closer look at the remaining three, you’ll notice that there’s a little something extra about them.
These remaining few pieces also come together easily, but they do have some extra features! There’s a tag that has a pocket to carry a gift card, a tag that opens up to a card, and a hanging door tag that can hold a small treat (perfect for ding dong ditching!).
Whether you choose to make just one or all of these delectable handmade tags, we hope you continue to find ways to enjoy sharing the festive Halloween spirit this year. If you have any questions about these projects or would like to share ways that you’ve been using the Got Candy? paper collection, leave us a comment below!

One of the most exciting things about the onset of Autumn here in Utah is the first frost of the season. It’s magical to wake up to a thin layer of white, like the world’s been given a beautiful coat of shimmer! We wanted to show you a quick and easy way to capture some of that Autumnal sparkle in your projects using Stickles™ Glitter Gel!
Stickles™ Glitter Gel is easy to spread, but you can also build it on a smaller area to create a more 3-dimensional look. We carry ten different colors of gels, giving you a wide variety of hues to choose from. Each bottle of Stickles™ Glitter Gel has a fine tip so you can apply it with ease and precision.
This Halloween-themed layout features many eye-catching elements created by different applications of Stickles™ Glitter Gel. First of all, take a closer look at the cobwebs in each corner. We’ve spread the gel over the paper in a thin layer to make the spider webs glisten.
Tip: To apply a thin layer of glitter gel to your project, squeeze a small amount onto a VersaMat™ and use a flat waterbrush to spread the gel gently over the desired area. If you don’t have a waterbrush handy, quick dabs with your fingers will work, too!
We’ve used this same spreading technique to apply thin layers of glitter on the white alphabet foam stickers, the ends of the candy wrapper, and the various stars throughout the layout. These sparkle spots help draw the eye throughout the layout and help you make your project even more personal as you make the glitter gel work for you!
For a more 3-D feel, we’ve added multiple layers of glitter gel to build up dimension on the frog’s crown, the dog’s nose, and the bat’s wings, as well as a few dots throughout the page. If you’re hoping to capture this more 3-dimensional look, there are a couple different techniques you can try.
One is to apply it in a thick layer over a small area, as you can see with the dots throughout the layout. Stickles™ Glitter Gel will compact as it dries, so you won’t end up with the same height you had when you first applied it to your project. However, when it is applied over a smaller area, it retains more of its initial height and 3-dimensional feel.
When you want that same dimension over a larger area, you will want to apply multiple layers of the gel, keeping each layer thin, and allowing them to dry before adding a new layer. It’s important to allow the gel to fully dry before you apply another layer on top, otherwise it will take much longer to complete your project, and you may end up with smeared glitter gel.
Look at how the Stickles™ Glitter Gel really shines on this adorable Halloween card. You can see that we’ve used thicker applications on the witch owl’s hat and the crescent moon, with a thin border at the bottom of the Pebble piece.
Whether you’re using it as a 3-D element or some well-placed bling, Stickles™ Glitter Gels are a great tool for adding pizzazz to any project!
We love working with glitter gel, and we can’t wait to see how you incorporate it into your own creations! Do you have any ideas about how to use Stickles™? Comment below and tell us all about it!
Halloween is creeping up on us, and if you’re not ready for it, things could get scary fast! If you still have a few treats to prepare, perhaps for your friends, coworkers, or those special kiddos in your life, we have three quick and easy ways to help you dress them up!
Let’s begin with tags.
Large tags are an easy way to turn a treat into something even more special. This spooktacular 3″ x 4″ tag is one of six tags featured in our Spooktacular Halloween workshop. These simple but adorable tags come together with just a few pieces of paper, a little bit of stamping, and some markers. For complete step-by-step instructions, click here to view the Spooktacular Workshop Guide (no purchase necessary 🙂 ).
Some of us are a bit busier than others and want something that comes together even more quickly than a handcrafted tag. How does a ready-made container from one of our incredible Cricut® collections sound?
Boo-tiful little treat boxes, like this one, take minutes to cut, assemble, and embellish. If you’re looking for that handcrafted experience—for yourself and the recipient of the treat—then the Artiste collection is a great place to get started. (Visit Accessing All 13 Close To My Heart Cricut® Collectionsfor information on how to gain access to this and other great shapes.)
This last treat dress-up we have to share with you is intended for those extra-special treats that you enjoy giving out. How many of you have special little trick-or-treaters that either start their evening or end their night with a knock at your door? It’s pretty common to make something with a little bit more love for these special little ones.
Whatever it is you’re giving-out as a treat, a decorated paper giftbag can usually carry it.
If you want to keep the treat concealed to add to the element of surprise, let us show you how to make a removable lid for a paper bag of any size.
First, determine the size of giftbag your treat(s) will require. Decorate the front of your bag as much as you like, but keep in mind that the top 2″ will be covered by the lid.
To make the lid….
Measure the size of the bag’s base. The bag pictured here has a 5¼” x 3″ base.
Using a piece of paper that is large enough, measure and cut a rectangle that is 3″ wider and 3″ longer than the base of your bag. For our bag, we cut an 8¼” x 6″ piece.
With a bonefolder, score your paper 1½” from the edges. Use the following image as a guide:
Insert your paper vertically into your paper trimmer, and cut along the score lines, leaving about ¾” uncut in all inside corners.
Fold along the score lines to create the lid shape and glue the corners.
Once your lid is assembled, add any embellishments that you’d like! We kept it simple and added nothing more than a zip strip along the bottom. When you’re done, fill your giftbag and slide the lid on.
Celebrate Halloween, and any other treat-worthy occasion, in style! Don’t settle for simple treats when you can make them Fa-BOO-lous! 😉
One of our favorite new products from our Core Products Catalog are the TriBlend™ markers. Inside every marker is a perfect gradation of colors, from light to dark, delivered through three separate fine bullet nibs. The alcohol-based ink is designed to blend seamlessly for mixing and layering colors. What’s not to love?
We put these trusty markers to work with our Spooktacular collection and just love the results! Take a look!
Can you spot all the different ways markers were used in this page?
To avoid getting ink on your hands as you apply color, we recommend you begin at the top of a piece and work your way down. Start with the top color, then add the second, slightly overlapping with the first, and then apply the third color, slightly overlapping with the second.
To achieve a more blended and seamless look, apply the layered portions of the ink while they are still wet. Let the ink sit for a few minutes after coloring to give it a chance to move and blend together. If you allow the ink to set before layering for a blend, or if you apply more ink in the layered parts, there will be visible lines between the shades of color. If this lined look is what you’re hoping to achieve, allow your ink to dry before layering.
While we’re looking at the title, did you notice the orange glitter gems?
Let’s move down the page now, to our spooky cat and dog friends.
You can see that the vampire cat was blended, and the dog was simply outlined. Knowing how to apply even just a small amount of color can make a big difference.
Let’s take a quick look at this “happy Halloween” card.
This cute witchy owl was colored with two of the three shades of the Purple TriBlend™ Marker. His broom, made up of just a few lines, was colored with the Tan TriBlend™ Marker. All three shades of the purple marker were used to create a striped background.
Get creative as you color your art, and experiment with the different shades each of the TriBlend™ markers has to offer.
To help you do that, we’ve put together the following color reference chart:
Download and print a free blank chart, here (here for AU/NZ), and add the three shades of each available marker color to its corresponding rectangle. You’ll notice that the Black marker does not have shade options, but we’ve added it to the list in order to have all the color options available for reference in one place.
**Make your chart last longer by printing it on cardstock rather than regular printer paper, and keep it handy as you’re making color and shade choices for your artwork. **
We all have a pretty good grasp on what the Tooth Fairy’s primary job entails. A child loses a tooth, leaves it under their pillow at night, and then, while the child is soundly asleep, the Tooth Fairy magically appears to collect the tooth and replaces it with a prize. But, she can do so much more!
Being in the tooth business, one of the Tooth Fairy’s other jobs is to help us keep our teeth sparkly and clean. To do this, the Tooth Fairy not only will trade prizes for lost teeth, but also for candies and treats. If your little ones are planning on doing some trick-or-treating this week, considering leaving some of their stash out at the end of the night for the local Tooth Fairy. Depending on her mood, who knows what prizes she will leave behind?! (An inside source has let us in on a little secret, too—the bigger the stash the better—so don’t be stingy! 🙂 )
Now, here’s a note for the local Tooth Fairies reading this. We understand that sometimes prizes get overlooked or even lost before children get the chance to find them. We’ve got an easy solution for you. Place your prize in a decorative matchbox, and make sure to leave a note!
This little box is approximately 2″ x 1½” x ½”. Download the PDF template below and use it to make your very own!
Here are some basic instructions, which are also printed on the downloadable PDF file, along with a few additional photos.
1. Print and hand trim template
2. Trace template on cardstock and patterned paper Tip: Use cardstock for the drawer and patterned paper for the accent and outer case.
3. Cut along solid lines; score and fold along dotted lines Tip: Create score lines with a straight edge and a bone folder.
4. Fold the insides of the inside drawer in on themselves while tucking the tabs into the folds of the shorter siders Tip: Attach the sides with adhesive to keep them in place.
5. Attach inside accent paper
6. Fold case and attach where it overlaps Tip: Wrap it around the drawer before attaching to ensure a good fit.
7. Embellish as desired
If you are not in the tooth collecting business, this little box can certainly come in handy for all sorts of occasions. From Halloween to Christmas, birthdays to everyday treats—you just never know when you’ll need a cute little box for a small gift!
We are so excited to have the talented Amy Robison as a guest blogger today! Not only is she a contributing artist for Silhouette, but is also somewhat of an expert at designing children’s themed parties, gifts, and crafts. Don’t take our word for it, see for yourself!
Hey! Amy Robison here! I’m so excited to share a fun party I created this week with the Shaker Windows & Confetti Thin Cuts, loose sequins, and Hello Pumpkin collection. If you follow me on Instagram stories then you already know that I am obsessed with the shaker windows after trying them out this week. I want to use them on everything! I already have a million ideas for Christmas. I’m getting a little ahead of myself, so I’ll calm down and focus on the party I’m sharing today— a slime making party. If you’re like me, then you hate this slime craze that has been going on for a few years. (It’s the worst!) Who started this? haha! My kids still love it though, so I decided that I just have to embrace it occasionally. Plus, how perfect is it for a Halloween party?
I started out by designing a few characters I could use with the shaker windows that would be festive for the holiday. I’m loving their simplicity and how they turned out. Once they were all designed, I added the shaker windows to each one. If you haven’t used the shaker windows before, I included a simple tutorial. They are a piece of cake and you’ll absolutely love them!
Shake Window Tutorial
Step 1: Remove the outer foam ring leaving the middle square foam adhesive to use for other projects. (Such a genius design so all that empty space isn’t wasted.)
Step 2: Place the foam shaker window ring on your project. It is very sticky, so you know it will stay right where you put it!
Step 3: Fill with sequins, glitter, sprinkles or any other fun media. This loose sequins mix is so beautiful! I can’t get enough of it, and it’s available in gold too!
Step 4: Remove the protective paper on the ring to reveal the adhesive.
Step 5: Peel the protective film off of the acetate circle. Use washy tape to help peel it off. This was a little tip I learned from the Close to my Heart creative team. Such a huge help!
Step 6: Place the acetate sheet on top. Press down to make sure everything is sealed in place.
Step 7: Using the Shaker Window Thin Cuts, cut out the finishing border in your choice of coordinating paper.
Step 8: Glue the border on top to finish.
Step 9: I taped a sucker stick to the back so that I could place them in my kits. These would be cute in gift baskets, too, as a tag to the recipient.
Once I finished all the shaker window characters, I gathered the supplies for the slime kits. I used the Hello Pumpkin collection to wrap and embellish the supplies and containers to make them look more cohesive and “pretty” everything up a bit.
Each kit has everything needed to make slime including fun sequins to mix inside to make it extra special. I love making each guest feel important and special. My guests are usually small children and I love the look on their faces when they see what is waiting on the table just for them. It’s the best and keeps me doing all these crazy parties.
Have you used the shaker windows before? Hopefully I have sparked some ideas of fun new ways you can use them in your next project.
Thank you Amy for all of your creative ideas! Please show our new friend some love in the comments below!
