Creating an Intricate Scrapbook Page Is Easier than You Think!

Scrapbook Spotlight: Sawyer#ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #sawyer #journaling #floral #butterfly #pastel #girly #girls #cute

We’re shining the spotlight on this beautiful scrapbook page featured in our January–February catalog. There are so many pretty little things happening throughout that add up to this final outcome. We’re breaking it down, technique by technique, and showing you how you, too, can use some of the same ideas and principles behind this page to create a layout of this caliber on your own and in your own style!

Start with the photo or group of photos you want to scrapbook and look for a common color, or color scheme, among them.

Scrapbook Spotlight: Sawyer#ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #sawyer #journaling #floral #butterfly #pastel #girly #girls #cute

In our case, the darling little girl in our picture is wearing a dress that matches our exclusive color Sundance. We picked the Sawyer paper collection, which features Sundance in its color palette, and picked from the collection’s set of coordinating products to create our page.

Scrapbook Spotlight: Sawyer#ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #sawyer #journaling #floral #butterfly #pastel #girly #girls #cute

(If there isn’t a paper collection that fits your particular color needs, turn to our Love of Color how-to book series. These books were designed to help make color choices with confidence by offering several color combination options for each of our exclusive colors!)

Once you’ve got your products selected, it’s a good idea to start with the base page.

White Daisy cardstock is a favorite base page choice because it complements both primary and secondary colors, and visually brightens and neutralizes any dark or busy patterns you may be using on your layout.

Scrapbook Spotlight: Sawyer#ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #sawyer #journaling #floral #butterfly #pastel #girly #girls #cute

Our next design choice was influenced by the sticker sheet and pattern papers we had picked out. Some of the elements in the sticker sheet and patterned papers looked like they had been painted with watercolor. We wanted to tie that watercolor paint scheme with the rest of the page, so an easy solution was to add splatters of actual watercolor paint to the base page.

Scrapbook Spotlight: Sawyer#ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #sawyer #journaling #floral #butterfly #pastel #girly #girls #cute

Before any of the other elements were attached, on our bare sheet of White Daisy cardstock, our artist picked up watercolor paint with the tip of a waterbrush and gently tapped the barrel of the brush on her index finger, above where she wanted the splatters to land. This splatter technique is a really fun way to add some “controlled chaos” to artwork. You get to choose the colors and the general placement of the splatters, but the results don’t feel so thought-out or rigid, providing a more artistic look to the overall aesthetic of your page.

A challenge you may be faced with is choosing from all of the beautiful, patterned papers and coordinating colored cardstock. When working with the Sawyer collection, we wanted to showcase them all! If you find yourself in this predicament, a great solution is to build a background using as many options as you can fit!

One approach is to pick a Cricut® or Thin Cuts shape and replicate it. You can also use strips of paper or replicate a pattern that inspires you—the possibilities are endless! We picked a diamond shape from our Artiste Cricut® collection (#M3BAC4) and cut a few from all of the patterns and solid color papers we wanted to incorporate into our design. If you take this approach for your own artwork, cut more of each shape than you think you will actually use. This way, you have extra to play around with as you decide on a pattern before attaching the final arrangement to your base page.

Scrapbook Spotlight: Sawyer#ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #sawyer #journaling #floral #butterfly #pastel #girly #girls #cute

*To replicate our design, use 21 diamond shapes, each 2⅞” tall and 2⅛” wide. The top and bottom rows are 1″ from the top and bottom of the page and the left column is 1⅝” from the left edge. Draw light pencil lines to use as guidelines in order to align your shapes just right. Remember to erase any remnants once your pieces are attached!

After completing the design in the center of the page, we felt like balancing it out with some sort of frame on the top and bottom edges. We turned to the Sawyer paper packet’s zip strips for inspiration. The zip strips are ½” accent papers along the top of our patterned papers that provide extra design options. We chose a multi-color pattern and then cut it in half to create two 12″ x ¼” strips of paper—perfect for using one at the top and one at the bottom. We paired those pieces with some Sundance cardstock to further accent the photo.

With this excellent foundation in place, we’re ready to move on to the foreground elements of the layout! When considering a title for your layout, consider whether any of the stamp sets, stickers, die-cuts, or pocket cards have a sentiment that fits what you are scrapbooking.

Scrapbook Spotlight: Sawyer#ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #sawyer #journaling #floral #butterfly #pastel #girly #girls #cute

We pulled the title for today’s page from the Sawyer coordinating sticker sheet. But before attaching it to the layout, we needed to determine our photo placement—the most important part of any layout!

Adding a photo mount with a coordinating cardstock color or patterned paper is a great way to make your photo stand out from the page. Because our background is pretty busy, we decided on a solid Harbour cardstock for our mat. (We matted our 3″ x 4″ photo on a 3¼” x 4¼”.) Not only is Harbour one of the Sawyer collection’s featured colors, but it is also a prominent color in the title stickers we chose. By choosing a photo mat in the same color as the title, we created a visual tie between the two.

After considering their placement, we attached our matted photo and title stickers to our prepared base page with 3-D foam tape. When you raise different elements of your layouts with foam tape the added dimension draws attention to those elements. In our example, we wanted the darling picture to be the focal point of the page, and a little bit of foam tape helped create this effect.

Once you’ve got your base page designed, titled, and mounted with photos, all that is left to do is to embellish and add journaling to your heart’s content. You can add as much or as little as is your style.

Scrapbook Spotlight: Sawyer#ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #sawyer #journaling #floral #butterfly #pastel #girly #girls #cute

If you’re a regular on our blog, website, or other social media pages, you may have noticed that we like creating clusters of embellishments on our layouts. The trick to these is to use different sizes, shapes, colors, and materials when you do, and to allow the embellishments to touch and overlap each other and other parts of your layout, including your photos. In our page, you’ll see that we’ve clustered stickers and die-cuts, some mounted on 3-D foam tape for that added dimension mentioned earlier, and layered them on each other, some overlapping the photo. Clusters also create a focal point, because of all of the visual attention they require when you’re taking a layout in as a whole. Place these strategically throughout your artwork and see what a difference they can make.

This gorgeous scrapbook page certainly has a lot of intricate things going on throughout it, but, taken one at a time, they are not very difficult to understand and replicate for yourself, and when you put them altogether, the end result can be truly breathtaking!

For more ideas and artwork examples, flip through the pages of our catalogs. There is so much there to see and to get inspired from!

As we approach the close of 2021, we do one of the most human things possible and turn our thoughts to the future. We plan, prepare, and hope for things that are to come. Are you prepared, or are you preparing, for a successful new year?

As you consider the possibilities that a new year brings, we would like to share several products to help organize your time, set goals, plan, and prioritize events.

REMEMBER TODAY

Gearing Up for a Year of Crafting #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhremembertoday #perpetualcalendar #photocalendar #cutabove #monthsoftheyear #newyear #svg

The exclusive Remember Today products are available in several kit options, one as a layout kit for creating 13 12″ x 12″ single-page scrapbook layouts, and two kit options using those same single-page layouts to create a 12-month calendar.

Gearing Up for a Year of Crafting #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhremembertoday #perpetualcalendar #photocalendar #cutabove #monthsoftheyear #newyear #svg

With the Remember Today stamp set, we can keep track of special dates, set goals, and even set reminders—and we can do it all in style with the beautiful designs included!

Whether you use the layouts to build a calendar or a scrapbook album (or both!—scrapbook your calendar pages at the end of each month!), the Remember Today pages and stamp set are a stunning way to plan for, make, and preserve wonderful memories in the year ahead!

PERPETUAL CALENDAR & MONTHLY STAMP SETS

Gearing Up for a Year of Crafting #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhremembertoday #perpetualcalendar #photocalendar #cutabove #monthsoftheyear #newyear #svg

Sometimes we need to look at the bigger picture, and a perpetual calendar is a great way to do it!

This last year, we rolled out a series of stamps dedicated to each month, aptly named Months of the Year 😉. Each stamp set is full of sentiments, borders, and icons for creating seasonally specific artwork all through the year. Pair these stamp sets with the Perpetual Calendar to design and create its pages!

Gearing Up for a Year of Crafting #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhremembertoday #perpetualcalendar #photocalendar #cutabove #monthsoftheyear #newyear #svg

Because Close To My Heart serves a global market, we’ve created two stamp sets for each month—one for crafters in the northern hemisphere, and another for artists in the southern hemisphere, to reflect the difference in seasons!

MONTHS OF THE YEAR SVGS

Gearing Up for a Year of Crafting #closetomyheart #ctmh #ctmhremembertoday #perpetualcalendar #photocalendar #cutabove #monthsoftheyear #newyear #svg

The last products we’re highlighting today are the digital art files included in our current Core Products Catalog, specifically the months of the year SVGs. Although we are only showing four examples, we have all twelve months of the year designed and ready to go. (Click here to see all available digital art files.)

Each month is available as a downloadable SVG file. Once you download the file, you can manipulate the images in a design software, like Cricut Design Space™. Resize it, remove layers—whatever you want, the file is yours! (Each different color shown in the artwork indicates different layers that can be edited and cut individually with your chosen software and personal cutting machine.)

There you have it, several great resources to help you get ready for the coming year—or to celebrate the year that we’re bringing to a close! 🙃

A New Months of the Year Stamp Set Series!

Months of the Year Stamp Sets #closetomyheart #ctmh #monthsoftheyear #calendar #perpetualcalendar #diy #scrapbooking #january #february #march #april #monthlystampsets

There’s something to love about each month and season, so we’re rolling out an entire years’ worth of stamping fun with a Months of the Year stamp series! With sentiments, icons, and borders for a variety of crafting projects, the stamp sets in the Months of the Year series provide a way to create beautiful artwork for any time of year. Today, we’re going to show off a few of the ways that the January and February sets can be used, and we have a feeling that once you’ve seen these two, you won’t be able to wait for the rest!

With every new set comes new opportunities to craft calendar pages, layouts, and so much more! Each Months of the Year set comes with a variety of different stamps to aid you as you create seasonally specific artwork all though the year. Throughout 2021, these stamps sets will be released, two at a time, with each of our bi-monthly catalogs, so you can look forward to the release of new sets through the end of the year!

Months of the Year Stamp Sets #closetomyheart #ctmh #monthsoftheyear #calendar #perpetualcalendar #diy #scrapbooking #january #february #march #april #monthlystampsets

Because Close To My Heart serves a global market, we’ve created two stamp sets for each month—one for crafters in the northern hemisphere, and another for artists in the southern hemisphere!

(🤓Fun Fact: Seasons are reversed between the northern and southern hemispheres! When someone in the US might be sledding or skiing, it would be a great time to hit the beach in Australia!)

These stamp sets are not only great to use individually but can also be used to create your own series of artwork along a theme! One of the most challenging parts of memory keeping can trying to decide which stories to tell, and where they should be placed. With a separate set designed for each month of the year, it’s easy to put together monthly scrapbook pages and in no time, you’ll have an entire album telling the story of the past year! This adorable Valentine layout is a wonderful example of how the stamps from the February stamp set can be used as perfect accents for the page design.

In this example, it’s easy to see how well the stamps and the paper we used complement each other, even though they weren’t specifically designed to coordinate with each other. Each Months of the Year set is easy to integrate into your artwork and includes enough variety to mix well with all our paper collections!

In addition to scrapbook layouts, the Months of the Year stamp sets are also a great tool to use when creating calendar pages! As you can see here, we’ve used these stamps to add decoration to full-size calendars and smaller perpetual calendars as well!

Months of the Year Stamp Sets #closetomyheart #ctmh #monthsoftheyear #calendar #perpetualcalendar #diy #scrapbooking #january #february #march #april #monthlystampsets

The Months of the Year stamp sets will all be available through the end of 2021, so you can order them at a time that works for you, pick and choose your favorites from the series, or get them regularly as they’re released. No matter when or where you use these stamps, we know you’ll love the beautiful designs and gorgeous artwork you can create with them! Also new to each paper collection is a coordinating set of Picture My Life™ cards. In the past, a new catalog came with two sets of Picture My Life™ cards whose color schemes would match two of the catalog’s paper suites. This time around, we are doing things a little bit differently. Instead of offering two sets of pocket cards in our new catalog, there are FOUR sets of Picture My Life™ cards. Each set corresponding to one of the paper collections not just in color but in theme as well. Including additional photos to your layouts and albums with our pocket Memory Protectors™ just got easier!

Thin-Cuts-stitched-frames-and-quilt-shapes

The Stitched Square Frames and Stitched Rectangle Frames Thin Cuts are an easy way to mat photos, journaling, and anything else you want to highlight in your art. Each of the dies included in the sets cuts two shapes: one stitched frame piece and a ½” smaller inside shape with stitching around its border. The Stitched Quilt Shapes Thin Cuts were designed to add stitched patterns and cut solid shapes that nestle perfectly inside the frames for effortless paper quilting!

Watercolor Die-cuts

watercolor-die-cuts

The Feels Like Home watercolor die-cuts are floral designs that come printed on two 6″ x 6″ watercolor papers. How to Use Your Love Letters Leftovers

Last week, we introduced the rose gold monogram Love Letter kits and shared some useful tips and tricks to assemble these like a crafting pro. One of the great things about these kits is that they come with more die-cut florals and stickers than you are likely to use on a single letter, which means that once your letter is complete and on display, you’ll have extra pieces to use on other projects—music to every crafter’s ears, right?! Today, we have some ideas on how you can use those leftover pieces on a few other paper crafting creations.

For starters, each kit comes with a 6″ x 6″ sheet of rose gold foil letter stickers. Once you’ve completed your Love Letter, you will surely have a good amount of stickers left over. Whatever you do, don’t throw them away! This gorgeous rose gold sticker alphabet works wonders in creating card sentiments and scrapbook titles!

As for the leftover floral pieces and banners, consider these as yet another tool in your crafting arsenal to use as embellishments and accents for any project.

Check out what we came up with below.

Now, let us tell you a little more about these Love Letters!Love Letters #closetomyheart #ctmh #love #letters #monogram #chipboard #paper #crafting #national #month #January
Each kit comes with one sturdy chipboard letter base, one paper and rose gold overlay piece, die-cut banners and floral embellishments, and rose gold foil alphabet stickers to create the word or name of your choice.

As you assemble these letters, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Love Letters #closetomyheart #ctmh #love #letters #monogram #chipboard #paper #crafting #national #month #January

1. The first thing is that you don’t have to use all of the pieces included in the letter kit. Depending on how you plan to use the letter, you might opt out of the banner or some of the flowers and succulents. The number of die-cuts you want to use will depend on the shape of your letter and the length of the word you’ve chosen. Remember, sometimes less is more.

2. If you are using the banner for a word or a name, add the alphabet stickers to the banner before attaching it to the letter. It’s also easier if you begin your word in the middle and work your way out. This way, you can make sure your word is centered and you have enough room for all of your letters prior to attaching any additional embellishments.

3. As you assemble the flowers, consider using your finger, a pencil, or any soft round edge to help shape some of the petals. (Not all of your flowers have to have curved petals). Also, when arranging them on your letter, do so before attaching them. Try arranging your flowers in triangles of color. If you’re not quite sure how to do that, look at the instructions insert including in your kit. There, you will find a completed example for each letter and the ampersand. (It’s okay to copy. We won’t tell!)

4. For those of you who want to take this project up a notch, there’s always some wiggle room. Look how we used a handful of additional products (not included in the kit) to quickly and easily embellish the flowers. The petals edges were given a pop of color with a sponge and some ink. We added sparkles and pearls to the flowers’ centers, and used the brand-new Bashful shimmer brush for a touch of extra shine on the green succulent petals.

These Love Letters are so versatile. Put them in frame, a wreath, or hang them on their own. Create words, names, or initials. They work in your living room, a bedroom, a nursery—really anywhere!

We hope you are as excited about National Papercrafting Month as we are. Don’t forget to subscribe and leave us a comment below telling us how you would use your Love Letter for a chance to win one letter of your choice FREE!!

Karen Morris: Memory Keeping Matters to Me

Thanks to our friend Presidential Director Karen Morris for contributing today’s post!

“I will always remember this moment.”

Hasn’t everyone experienced special times that we savor and simply KNOW we’ll never forget? But the truth is, memories fade and those moments are lost. That’s why I am passionate about memory keeping—the complete package of photos accompanied by journaling. They say, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” but not really—photos need your words. Saving memories in photo albums and scrapbooks keeps those “snapshots of time” real and everlasting.

I’ve been a memory keeper for as long as I can remember. In my younger years, I started with diaries, adding photos here and there. In my early adult years, I was caught up in the “magnetic photo page” craze and that is where my creativity blossomed as I cut colored index cards to create journaling spots. (Pretty lame compared to all of the creative options we have now, right?)

Today I love and use three types of memory keeping: traditional 12″ x 12″ handmade scrapbook pages filled with photos, notes, and embellishments; pocket scrapbooking with Picture My Life™ scrapbooking programs, which have helped me catch up on several travel albums; and, last but not least, digital pages from Studio J®. As you browse my albums, you’ll see a mix of all three styles and it works beautifully!

Memory keeping took on a whole NEW meaning for me when I became a grandmother for the first time—of twin girls! Babies change so quickly. I adored the sweet smell of a newborn and simply couldn’t get enough. One of my favorite pages is one I created when the girls were newly born. I titled it “Who Knew,” and added words from my heart: “Who knew I’d love this ‘grandma’ thing so much! I figured there would be joy. I didn’t anticipate this immediate, head-over-heels, unconditional love. I didn’t expect every waking moment to be so consumed with those sweet babies. I remember being amazed at the birth of my own children. But the birth of twin granddaughters seems, well, indescribable…magical, precious, delightful. Life will never be the same again, nor would I want it to be. These baby girls have brought a brilliance to life that I never knew existed.”

Who Knew page by Karen Morris

A few weeks after creating this page, I jotted my feelings in a notebook so that I could capture the day’s emotions for a layout to be created later: “February 12, 2007. This is my first trip away from my granddaughters. Who would have guessed it would be so hard? Those sweet angels have captured my heart and I am going through withdrawals. Okay, so the plane is still on the tarmac and I haven’t officially left town. I’m still missing them—their big observant eyes, the drooling milk mouths, the way they snuggle so closely when I hold them. My sweet angels. Our miracles. I love you and will return in 72 hours and 37 minutes. ~Grandma Karen”

Fast forward several years later to an impromptu lunch with my son, daughter, plus my four-year-old grandson—just the four of us. We went to a favorite sandwich shop and Gavin was in such an animated mood that day that I pulled out my camera phone and began snapping away (mostly unnoticed by anyone). One of the first things I did when returning home was to quickly create this Studio J layout titled, “That’s My Boy.”

Our family also includes the four-legged variety. Currently we have a cocker spaniel and three shih tzus, each with their own personality. Being that they are part of my life’s experience, I also do pages about them. When we unexpectedly lost a previous family pet, Murray, at a young age, I created this tribute to him.

Scrapbooks are fun to browse through—my grandchildren love seeing pictures of themselves and family members at much younger ages. We love those walks down memory lane and relive stories together through these books. Our conversations consist of, “Remember when…,” “I loved the time you…,” and, “Look how much they’ve changed since….”

There’s also an even more practical side of memory keeping: these are the best reference books ever! More than once my husband and I have pulled out a scrapbook to find a specific memory. “What was the name of that restaurant we particularly enjoyed in Hawaii so we can return there on our next trip?” (By the way, it was the “Winds of Beam Reach” on Kauai, since closed, but they served the absolute BEST blackened Ono I’ve ever encountered!) Or we check dates of the last cruise and locations visited. (“What was that jewelers name on St. Thomas?!”)

I create memory books and fill them with what matters to me. They’re a chronicle of my life, my experiences, and my heart. What matters to you?
