Kid Crafts with Maya!

CTMH Kids Crafts #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhkidscrafts #borntoshine #scrapbooking #memorykeeping #storytelling #photoalbum #minialbum

As any avid scrapper knows, crafting can be a great way to learn more about yourself and embrace all the things that make you special. Sharing this opportunity for self-discovery with the kids in your life is a great way to show them how much you care about them, while also introducing them to the joys of paper crafting and scrapbooking!

We’re excited to announce a new series of virtual events, specifically geared toward a younger audience. Introducing…CTMH Kids Crafts! These special virtual events will be hosted by Close To My Heart President Monica Wihongi’s nine-year-old daughter, Maya. Kids will love crafting along with Maya as she shows them how to create fun, personalized projects, just for them!

CTMH Kids Crafts #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhkidscrafts #borntoshine #scrapbooking #memorykeeping #storytelling #photoalbum #minialbum

During our first CTMH Kids Crafts event, Maya will take kids through each step of creating the fun Born to Shine album! With an adorable 4″ x 4″ mini album from the Story by Stacy™ collection and some too-cute Picture My Life™ pocket cards from the Summer Vibes collection, the Born to Shine album is a perfect starting point for any kid to begin their crafting journey!

This first CTMH Kids Crafts event is taking place on August 21, starting at 4:30 p.m. (MDT). If you are planning to create along with Maya, you will need a Born to Shine album kit, which comes with one 4″ x 4″ mini album, one pack of Summer Vibes Picture My Life™ pocket cards, 4″ x 4″ sheets of white cardstock, the exclusive My Acrylix® Born to Shine stamp set, and a 2″ x 3½” ¼” stamping block. Apart from this handy kit, all that you or your kids will need to complete the project are a paper trimmer, an ink pad, some adhesive, and a journaling pen!

CTMH Kids Crafts #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhkidscrafts #borntoshine #scrapbooking #memorykeeping #storytelling #photoalbum #minialbum

This project can be a great way to introduce kids to stamping and crafting, but it’s also an excellent opportunity to introduce them to the art of memory keeping, as they’ll get to select their own photos  and decide what stories they want to tell.

The Born to Shine album is simple and fun to create, with some minimal cutting. Since paper trimmers or scissors will be involved, we recommend that any child who participates be supervised by an adult. (Each page in the Born to Shine album is made from trimmed down pocket cards and 4″ x 4″ cardstock.)

Every one of the layouts in this album your kiddos will make with Maya include fun, positive sentiments from the stamp set specially designed to celebrate their best qualities. At Close To My Heart, we want every kid to realize that they are special, and we’re so excited to help them embrace the things that make them great!

Just a few days ago, Maya and Monica went live on Facebook and they eagerly shared more about this brand-new series of events and the Born to Shine album. Take a look!

The CTMH Kids Crafts: Born to Shine virtual event is free to attend (watch), and as Maya says, this project is great for “every kind of kid!” Even if your kids aren’t little anymore, you can still share this event with grandkids, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, or any other kid in your life! To make things even more exciting, we’ll be doing some fun giveaways during the live event, with tons of opportunities to win! In order to be eligible to win any of these prizes, make sure to mark yourself as “GOING” on the Close To My Heart (Official) Facebook events page. We can’t wait for you and your kiddos to join us for our inaugural CTMH Kids Crafts event and the many more to come!

Preserving the Best of Your Child’s School Years

You've Got Class #closetomyheart #CTMH #you'vegotclass #ctmhyou'vegotclass #backtoschool #memorykeeping #organizing #organising #school #schoolpicture #schoolmemento #schoolkeepsake #schoolalbum #backtoschoolSummer adventures are coming to a close as school bells begin to ring, generating much excitement and anticipation for a new academic year. We’ve prepared our children’s wardrobes, collected supplies, and arranged for healthy lunches in hopes of ensuring as much success as can be planned for. Just as we’re about to send these kiddos into the seemingly unknown, we prop them in our porches, getting on a school bus, or standing with their teacher and make them smile for the camera. Click!

And they’re off! School is back in session. Before you know it, you’re knee deep in artwork, certificates of excellence, report cards, and all kinds of treasures that you just don’t know what to do with. You most certainly don’t need to keep everything your child scribbles on, but there are and will be some things that you will cherish and value for a long time, if not forever. This happens year, after year, after year.

Because we are committed to memory keeping, we had to come up with a system that works to preserve these wonderful and prized memories. With some thoughtful consideration, we were able to put together a project that comes together quickly and easily to create a scrapbook album for all of these formative school years. Dear non-scrapbooker reading this post, please hear us out for a sec. before you assume this no longer applies to you. 😉

You've Got Class #closetomyheart #CTMH #you'vegotclass #ctmhyou'vegotclass #backtoschool #memorykeeping #organizing #organising #school #schoolpicture #schoolmemento #schoolkeepsake #schoolalbum #backtoschool

With the materials and instructions included in the You’ve Got Class workshop kit you create an entire album with one page for each school year. What makes this workshop unique to other scrapbooking workshops are our True Fit Folios. True Fit Folios are white cardstock folders that fit perfectly inside 12″ x 12″ Memory Protectors™. The workshop is designed so that each scrapbook page is assembled on a side of one of the folders. After you complete all of your pages, or folder sides, you insert them into the Memory Protectors™ inside an album. With this completed album, you are all set and ready to start adding your keepsakes and mementos inside the pockets, where they will be securely and safely stored for years to come!

You've Got Class #closetomyheart #CTMH #you'vegotclass #ctmhyou'vegotclass #backtoschool #memorykeeping #organizing #organising #school #schoolpicture #schoolmemento #schoolkeepsake #schoolalbum #backtoschool

If you’ve got any kids in your life—children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors—this workshop is for you. Even if these “kids” are old and grown, chances are their school day relics are collecting dust “in a box somewhere.” (Well-preserved memories make a wonderful gift!)

If you’ve been looking for a way to store school memories with easy access, this is it. If scrapbooking is “not your thing,” this is the time to reconsider, even if it’s just this once. You want this album on your shelf, and so do your kids—cross our hearts!

And for those of us who are constantly click, click, clicking with our cameras, there are likely a few additional photos to include on the folio pages. We thought of that, too!

The You’ve Got Class workshop kit includes Flip Flaps™ so that more photos, journaling, or keepsakes can be added anywhere on a page without taking up additional room. Yep—they’re like magic! 🙂

Preserve the best of your child’s school years with the You’ve Got Class collection of products. This special features a paper collection, exclusive stamp set, and workshop kit specifically designed to commemorate the passage of these school years. But act quickly, these products are only available through September 30 while supplies last! (And they are moving fast!)

Kid Friendly Garland

Kid Friendly Garland #ctmh #closetomyheart #holiday #christmas #garland #paper #chain #diy #kid #children #child #friendly #craft #crafting #creativity #family #time

We know what you’re thinking, with less than a week away from Christmas there’s no way we can convince you to start any more paper projects until well into January. But, we sure want to try! 😀

Children love making things with their hands. Creativity is an innate part of childhood. And, you love creating and making things, too—so why not share this passion and create something fun and festive together to add to your celebrations.

We came up with an idea to help you use up some of your paper stash while making valuable memories with the adorable little ones in your life.

Kid Friendly Garland #ctmh #closetomyheart #holiday #christmas #garland #paper #chain #diy #kid #children #child #friendly #craft #crafting #creativity #family #time

A simple paper chain like this is a cinch to put together, making it the perfect project for this busiest of seasons. It’s also a great project for involving younger crafters, and keeping those tiny hands busy! Use whatever fun patterns and colors you or your co-crafters like, and display the finished product as a garland.

Kid Friendly Garland #ctmh #closetomyheart #holiday #christmas #garland #paper #chain #diy #kid #children #child #friendly #craft #crafting #creativity #family #time

Make your garland any size and length you like, to fit your style and space. For ours, we made each link from 2″ x 9″ strips of paper. At first we used only an adhesive runner to keep the pieces together but as we started working with the thicker glitter papers, we realized that those pieces would need something extra if they were going to be links in our chain. So, we glued them first then added mini staples to make sure they stayed in place.

Kid Friendly Garland #ctmh #closetomyheart #holiday #christmas #garland #paper #chain #diy #kid #children #child #friendly #craft #crafting #creativity #family #time

Mini staples, while securing the elements of your project, make for fun accents, too. We ended up adding extra staples to pieces that didn’t need them simply for the look.

The best part about crafting with children is not the project you are working on, but the moments you share with each other. That togetherness is especially wonderful during this time of year. Share your passion for creativity with the little hands in your life and turn that time into memories worth preserving.

11 Reasons Your Children Will Want to Have Baby Books

11 Reasons Your Children Will Want to Have Baby Books #babyscrapbook #babybook #baby #memories #crafting #scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart

In a day and age that makes taking and printing photos so easy, you would think that more and more parents would preserve these photos in books and scrapbooks. However, it seems that most photos nowadays don’t leave our computers or social media accounts—and at times, even our cameras!

The art of printing our family photos, writing down our stories, and placing them all together in the safe arms of an album seems to be a dying art—and it’s something that our kids are going to miss someday. When they want to see what they were like as babies and toddlers, the years they will remember very least, they will have nowhere to turn.

Here are 11 reasons why your children will want to have baby books:

1. They will know where to find photos of their childhood.

You may know where your favorite pictures of your babies are on your computer or on Facebook, but in 10 years will your kids know where to look? Not so much, unless they can grab their baby album off of the bookshelf.

2. A baby book is tangible evidence of your love.

When your kids go through the emotional highs and lows of the teenage years, the baby books you made for them will remind them—and you—that, despite what it might seem like at times, you love them with all your heart. 🙂

11 Reasons Your Children Will Want to Have Baby Books #babyscrapbook #babybook #baby #memories #crafting #scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart

3. Your toddlers will love to look through their baby books.

Though you may think your kids won’t value their baby books until they are older, chances are they will actually love them as toddlers. Toddlers love to see pictures of themselves as babies; it’s part of a phase where they begin to discover their own identity. Also, baby books make some of the best bedtime stories!

4. They will love to look at their baby pictures when they have their own kids someday.

When your kids start to have kids of their own, it will be so much fun for them to look through their baby books and see how their traits and mannerisms were passed down to their own kids.

11 Reasons Your Children Will Want to Have Baby Books #babyscrapbook #babybook #baby #memories #crafting #scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart

5. They will want to look through their siblings’ baby books.

Nothing bonds siblings together quite like looking through each other’s baby books. They will laugh at silly pictures of each other. And even though they may not have memories of their siblings because of age differences, they will get to see those memories through your eyes.

6. They will love to show relatives who come to visit their baby books.

Your in-laws or grandparents might live far away, but you can help them feel more connected to your children by showing them the baby books you’ve been working on when they are in town visiting—and once your kids are old enough, they will love to be the ones to pull out their baby books and talk your visitors through each page. 🙂

11 Reasons Your Children Will Want to Have Baby Books #babyscrapbook #babybook #baby #memories #crafting #scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart

7. Life goes by lightning fast, and baby books make it easy to stroll down memory lane anytime they want.

Childhood flies by, so your kids will want to revisit their old memories. And if you’re a young mom, just trust us. You will want to revisit those baby pictures over and over again. Especially once puberty hits. 😉

8. You will forget the stories, even if you preserve the photos.

Though you may save all your photos in one way or another, the stories that go along with those photos will be lost unless you document them in a book. And moments from those sweet baby years are moments both you and your children will want to remember forever, even the small ones.

11 Reasons Your Children Will Want to Have Baby Books #babyscrapbook #babybook #baby #memories #crafting #scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart

9. They will love to see your perspective.

You may think baby books are all about your babies, but they’re also a time capsule of you as a mom. As your babies grow into parents themselves, they will love to look back on your perspective as a new mother. Even seeing your handwriting will bring back good memories.

10. They will cherish their baby books more and more with time.

A baby book is something that increases in value with age. Just imagine how much that book will mean to your kids when they have grandkids and great grandkids! It’ll be a family treasure!

11 Reasons Your Children Will Want to Have Baby Books #babyscrapbook #babybook #baby #memories #crafting #scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart

11. They will turn to their baby books in difficult times.

When life gets your kids down, they will turn to their baby books for comfort, to reminisce about the good old days, and to gain some perspective (though you may not see them doing this as teenagers because that would be so embarrassing! 🙂 )

Valentine’s Day Ideas for School

Valentine’s Day holds a special place in our hearts because it’s a celebration of card-giving and gift-giving—two of our favorite things! Combine that with loads of sugary sweets, and we’re in heaven! 🙂

Since we love both sweets AND all things paper, we’ve whipped up a few fun ideas for your kids’ school valentines that combine the two—and of course, we’ve also got a cute gift idea for school teachers as well! For these Valentine’s projects, we turned to our treat-themed Sugar Rush papers and embellishments.

Kids emoji Valentine's Day cards for their school class #diy #handmade #cards #valentines #valentinesday #emojis #school #ctmh #closetomyheart

If you’re looking to make lots of cards for your kids’ classes, try making smaller 3″ x 3″ cards. Small cards will help make your paper stretch further, and you can decorate them much quicker! Attach a treat to the inside or back of each card, and you’re set!

We chose to use the Emojis stamp set because we wanted our cards to be playful—and what could be better for that than silly faces? 🙂 To round off the cards, we used some of our Sugar Rush Complements and dots, which perfectly match the papers. Easy peasy.

Have fun “testing” your kids’ candy while designing your own mini card designs—and maybe even let your kids get in on the fun!

Don’t forget to give those school teachers something sweet, too!  A little thoughtfulness can go a long way!

How about a cupcake with a cute tag? This tag uses our Sugar Rush—Cardmaking stamp set, which has sentiments that are perfect for pairing with desserts.

When you’re done using this stamp set for creating a school teacher gift, use it to create Valentine’s Day cards and gift tags for your sweetheart, kids, and friends. Then use it again and again for birthdays and other occasions all year long wherever a sweet dessert is involved. 😉

Creating duplicates of the same shapes also comes in handy when you want to really deck out a scrapbooking page. Here we used the Swirly Seashells Thin Cuts to make all these little seashells. Since we didn’t need to spend nearly as much time trimming out the seashells, we had more time to add beautiful watercolor details to them instead.

We’ve shown you artwork made using two of the four new Thin Cuts sets, and given you just a small taste of the possibilities! Check out our promotions page to learn more about this limited-time offer!

Crafting with Kids: Valentine Boxes

Help the kids get ready for the downpour of warm fuzzies from their friends this Valentine’s Day with a trendy valentine box! Every piece of this adorable box is simple enough for a child to recreate it. Of course, with the creativity of the kids on board, the two of you will probably be able to come up with something uniquely your own. Put your heads together to build your note catcher.

Valentine Box and cards

First, pull out a Designer Creations cupcake box. It’s made of designed kraft paper and has a clear plastic window for quick and easy monitoring of the love note stash. Make your box even more irresistible by trying a few of these artistic techniques:

• Cut a 3″ long slot in the top panel of the box, making it just the right size for receiving notes from other kids.
• Use your Cricut® machine to cut out hearts to stamp on. Many of your heart stamps will coordinate with shapes on your Close To My Heart Cricut® cartridges. See the stamp carrier sheet to find info on which cartridge to use and at what size to cut out your heart in order to match your stamp.
• Get creative when decorating your hearts. Check out the look we achieved using the Brushstrokes stamp set for a background and the XOXO stamp set for a sentiment on one of our large hearts! Those small hearts you see were stamped on scrap cardstock and trimmed out.
• Draw fun borders on your hearts with a journaling pen.
• Use Shimmer Trim to create glimmering bows to top off your project.

These 3″ x 3″ cards are also a lot of fun to make with the kids—and so very simple. The little ones will love to help with the stamping, and they’ll end up with cute valentines to share with their friends. It’s also a great way to use up your extra supplies!

Once you’re feelin’ the love, it’s time to turn your thoughts to teacher. This same cupcake box is also ideal for tucking away treats, so you could place a mouthwatering cupcake in the round base insert and let your child deliver the sweet!

Valentine Teacher Box

Deck out your box to match the sugary delight inside by using some of these ideas:

• Trim cardstock pieces on which to stamp sentiments. You could use your Cricut® machine for this step, but it also provides a great opportunity for your young helpers who are good with scissors!
• Make the trimming even easier by finding a printed heart shape you can trim out and stamp on. This one came from a Picture My Life™ Heartstrings scrapbooking program card.
• Stamp sentiments on your cardstock shapes. Here we’ve used the alphabet stamp set from the Cricut® Artfully Sent collection to spell the word “Teacher.”
• Add a few embellishments of your choice. We love the look of the Heartstrings Complements combined with the pink glitter gems!
• Once again, use your journaling pen to create unique borders on your heart.
• Use Shimmer Trim to complete your look

You’re sure to melt a few hearts this Valentine’s Day with these lovely creations. We hope you have a heartwarming time making papercrafts and memories together!
