Fall Décor in a Snap with Nevermore

Those of you who’ve already gotten your hands on our Nevermore paper packet probably have grand plans for fall and Halloween-themed layouts. Well, here’s another idea for you to try out 🙂 :

Nevermore Fall Banner

This fun, festive banner comes together quickly and easily with a little help from our Cricut® Artbooking and Artistry collections and, of course, the Nevermore paper packet.

What a great project to do with young children or grandchildren. They would love to watch the Cricut® cut out the leaves (because it’s even exciting for us adults to watch!), and then they could help slide the leaves onto the thread. If you don’t have any small children around, this would also be a relaxing project to work on while enjoying a little “me” time watching your favorite Julia Roberts movie and sipping some warm apple cider.

And did you notice the stamped leaves our artist colored in with the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers? With the help of last week’s post about using these markers with our stamps, you could easily do this at home. The My Acrylix® Thankful Heart stamp set supplied the leaf images, which add such character to the banner. You could even add different stamps or embellishments to match other elements of your home décor.

There are so many works of art you can create with the Nevermore paper packet. Share you own Nevermore artwork by using the hashtag #ctmhnevermore, or search for this hashtag on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest for more artwork inspiration from the Close To My Heart community.

Stamping Technique: Marker Coloring

Remember the marker chart from last week that showed you how to create our exclusive colors by blending ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers? Well, today we’re going to show you beautiful artwork that uses these formulas to fill in stamps! AND we’re going to teach you some tricks for how to do this!

Using this month’s featured paper packets, Zoe and Nevermore, our artist made these 3 adorable autumn cards:

Autumn Cards

Aren’t they cute? Using the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers to fill in stamped images is a great way to add rich, vibrant color to your artwork. Before we dive in to the specific techniques used in these cards, let’s talk about ink and paper. When filling in a stamped image with these alcohol-based markers, the ink you use to stamp your image really matters. If you stamp with a water-based ink, your image will most likely bleed and become less distinct as you color over it with the markers. We recommend using our Archival Black Exclusive Inks™ pad or other inks like the Black StazOn™ ink pad or the Tuxedo Black Memento™ ink pad.

Whatever ink you use, be sure that your ink dries completely before you use the markers. On this artwork, our artist used a craft heater to make sure the stamped images were completely dry before she grabbed her markers. We also recommend using White Daisy cardstock when blending the markers to create our exclusive colors.

So Thankful

After stamping (and drying!) the outline of these blossoms, our artist followed the marker chart to create Pomegranate, Eggplant, Sunset, and Saffron petals. As you’ll remember from our previous post, the order of the layered colors is very important, so make sure to follow the marker chart. We love how she alternated Saffron and Sunset on the largest flower! With the help of the chart, she also created Fern and Sweet Leaf leaves. Notice how the Eggplant cardstock on the base of the card matches the Eggplant blossom and pulls the card together.

Autumn Harvest

On this card, our artist used a really cool technique to get the shading on the leaf. She began by following the instructions for creating Sweet Leaf: First she colored the stamp with the Sap Green marker and then with the Pastel Green marker. To create Sweet Leaf you have to repeat these steps, so she colored it again with Sap Green, but then only colored half of the leaf with the Pastel Green, creating that ombré effect. How cool is that?

Happy Halloween

For the final card, our artist dressed this little monster up in Gypsy, Thistle, and Pear, created again by blending our markers. And don’t you just love those rosy cheeks? After coloring the face using the Barley Beige marker, the artist used the fine tip of the Light Orange marker to lightly add a few dots close together in a circle shape. She then immediately colored over the cheek a few times with Barley Beige large tip to blend the cheek in. The result—a very cute, blushing vampire.

And there you have it! A few tricks you can use when filling in your stamps with the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers. Coloring Time!

Have you ever wondered how to create our exclusive colors with the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers? Well wonder no more, because we’re about to show you how!

After some experimentation, one of our amazing artists has identified winning marker combinations that faithfully replicate the colors in our exclusive color palette. We’ve used her findings to create this marker chart that shows which marker colors to mix to create our exclusive colors.

Marker ChartPretty neat, right? Now just imagine how nicely your coloring is going to coordinate with our cardstock, Fundamentals, and B&T Duos™ in your artwork! Okay, okay, let’s dive into the details of how we created this chart so you can do it at home. Here are instructions for filling out your own marker chart:

  1. Print off the marker chart. (Use this version if you prefer “colour” to “color” 🙂 )
  2. Using our 1″ Circle Punch, punch out a circle for each color of cardstock on the chart. Attach these circles to the chart.
  3. On White Daisy cardstock, shade an area with the first marker color listed for a particular circle. Use the large tip of the marker. Then, with the ink still wet on the cardstock, shade the area with the second marker color.
  4. Some of the colors also require shading with the blender marker, additional markers, or multiple applications of specific colors. Just be sure that the ink from the previous application is still wet when applying your next color.
  5. Use our 1″ Circle Punch to punch out a circle from your marker shading, and attach it to the right of the corresponding cardstock circle.
  6. Complete steps 3 through 5 for all colors on the chart.
  7. Hang the chart in your crafting space for future reference.
  8. Do your happy dance!

Marker Chart How To

As you create this marker chart, here are a few important things to know:

  • The order in which you layer the marker colors is VERY important. Start with the first marker color, and then add the second marker color on top of the wet ink for the best results.
  • The color of the paper will affect the marker color combinations. We tested our color combinations on White Daisy cardstock.
  • Results may vary with how hard or light you press on the marker.
  • Blending markers can create a streaky texture. We love this because it makes the artwork look handmade rather than printed, so embrace the unique textures you create!

Tonight, grab your favorite beverage, some chocolate, and your printed marker chart—then slip away to your crafting space for an hour or so. It’s time to treat yourself to some well-deserved crafting time, and creating this marker chart is the perfect activity to wind down after a long day. Enjoy!

3 Creative Techniques to Spice Up Your Journaling

In the scrapbooking world, we spend a lot of time talking about the papers, the stamps, and the embellishments that go into making a layout great. Journaling is often an afterthought, a quiet feature scribbled in the margins. But isn’t journaling just as much a part of the story? We think so!

To give journaling the attention it deserves, we switched things up and put it in the spotlight for a change. Our clever artists came up with three breathtaking techniques for spicing up your journaling—the indispensable, storytelling counterpart to any successful layout.

1. Mark It Up
Unknown-14
We all knew the Marvy® Uchida® LePen™ journaling pen was a hero, but this layout takes its powers to new heights. And when you partner this pen with its trusty sidekicks, the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers, the look becomes a genuine work of art.

Unknown-13
To achieve this artistic look, plan to put as much effort into designing the placement of the words as you do the placement of the photos and papers. Highlight some phrases in bright colors and occasionally change up the font to keep things visually interesting.

Unknown-12
Remember, the most beautiful thing about this kind of journaling is the warmth of your own handwriting! Embrace imperfections and let the markers draw where they may.

2. Say It with Stamps
Unknown copy
Have you ever thought of stamp sentiments as their own form of journaling? Well, they are! So why not try combining the two? Using sentiments along with your regular journaling blocks gives your words an extra punch of color and spunk. It also adds to the hodgepodge look that scrapbooking is all about.Unknown-9
Including stamps in your journaling will also weave it into the flow of the rest of the layout. With this technique, journaling will be an awkward outsider no more and words everywhere will rejoice.

3. Bursts of Blurbs
Unknown-11
Let your journaling float around the page inside bubbles of stamps! Find a stamp set that can accommodate journaling and fill up its stamped images with little blurbs that serve as commentators on your layout. It’s a simple and easy way to add embellishment and journaling all at once.Unknown-10
Journaling is a land that is widely unexplored in the scrapbooking world, so go forth and make some discoveries! Try out one of these techniques and see where the path leads you.

Seamless Spring Stamping

There’s something unmistakable in the air this time of year. Besides the stuff that tickles the sinuses, the stuff that tickles the artistic soul is in full bloom. When you’re ready to relieve that tickle, pick up your Seasonal Expressions 2 idea book to see the crisp, new spring stamp sets bursting out all over!

One of our favorite flowering sets holds a place in our hearts not just because it’s adorable, but also because it’s incredibly utilitarian. The Botanical Backgrounds stamp set, found on page 16 of Seasonal Expressions 2, is your secret to seamless stamping.

You & I Layout

The springy designs of this set are made to be stamped in succession without any evidence of overlap. Applied to pages and cards, these stamps turn blank cardstock into patterned paper, straight off the press.

Botanical Backgrounds stamp set

How does it work? First, ink your stamp with an Archival Black Exclusive Inks™ pad. Press it to your cardstock, allowing the edges of the stamp to overlap onto your protected surface.

Re-ink your stamp and place it under the first impression, making sure to align the designs. Once you pull away you’ll see how your second stamp took over exactly where the first left off. Cool, no?

Botanical Backgrounds stamp

Continue to stamp your cardstock to your liking, re-inking your stamp with every repetition.

When you’ve finished stamping the pattern outline, pull out your ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers to splash some color onto those pretty petals.

Botanical Backgrounds stamp
