10 Tips and Ideas for Using TriBlend™ Markers

One of our favorite ways to add color to our art projects is with trusty TriBlend™ markers. We recently picked our artists’ brains and put together a list of 10 practical tips, tricks, and ideas for using these colorful tools!

10 Tips and Ideas for Using TriBlend™ Markers #markers #coloring #color #closetomyheart #ctmh #triblend #blend #colors

If you are not familiar with TriBlend™ markers, inside every marker there is a gradation of colors, from light to dark, delivered through three separate fine bullet nibs. You basically get three markers in one! The alcohol-based ink is especially designed to blend seamlessly for mixing and layering the shades.

When blending alcohol-based inks, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1. The surface onto which you are applying the inks will make a difference in how to layer or mix them. If you are using a porous surface, like paper, and are hoping to create a seamless blend, don’t allow the ink to dry between color applications. Start with the lightest color, then add a darker shade, overlapping some of the color in the middle of the two. While the ink is still wet, it will move and spread through the fibers of the paper. When two colors of ink are wet on top of each other, they will spread into each other, creating a more seamless blend.

10 Tips and Ideas for Using TriBlend™ Markers #markers #coloring #color #closetomyheart #ctmh #triblend #blend #colors

The same is true in the opposite scenario. If you want to create a seam in between colors, allow the first color to dry. When applying the second color, don’t overlap too much, because this second color will continue to spread into the first color until it dries.

2. This second tip is more of a trick that we use when we color our stamped images with TriBlend™ markers. Like we mentioned above, alcohol ink will spread through the fibers of a piece of paper when it’s still wet. Keep that in mind as you color a stamped image, and avoid coloring up to the edges, leaving a tiny space for the ink to move into on its own. If you apply too much ink to a stamped image, even though you may have colored in the lines, it may not look that way by the time the ink is absorbed and dries.

10 Tips and Ideas for Using TriBlend™ Markers #markers #coloring #color #closetomyheart #ctmh #triblend #blend #colors

3. Alcohol ink doesn’t just absorb into paper and cardstock, but it usually also soaks through it. When coloring parts of a project, we recommend using scratch paper underneath it. If you are going to color directly onto your project, remember that you will see the bleed-through on the other side. If you are working on a card, for example, you will see bleed-through of colored images on the inside of your card if you color directly on the card front. There are two ways you can address this: You can either create separate pieces for coloring that will get attached to the card front afterward, or, you can add a piece of cardstock on the inside of the card to cover up the spots where the ink has soaked through. (In the cards above, the elements that were colored with TriBlend™ markers are on separate pieces of paper from the card base).

4. If you’d like to color on vellum with TriBlend™ markers, go for it! Vellum is less porous than regular paper, therefore it does not absorb the ink. Since the ink does not absorb into vellum, it also doesn’t spread the way it would on paper. You can still move and blend the ink, but in this case, you will do so yourself with the nib of your marker. The ink will dry on the surface, and it will dry well since it is alcohol-based.

You can create a softer “stained glass” effect by coloring stamped images on vellum from behind!

  • 10 Tips and Ideas for Using TriBlend™ Markers #markers #coloring #color #closetomyheart #ctmh #triblend #blend #colors

5. Our fifth tip is to use the Blender Marker. Though technically not a “TriBlend” marker, since it only has two nibs, this marker contains a colorless alcohol-based ink and is intended to be used as a blender with other alcohol-based color markers. What we’ve discovered is our use is that this marker works well to lift and lighten other colors. Our artists love to use it to create sheens or light reflections on things like balloons, sunglasses, or fruit.

One of the perks of blending different shades of one color in alcohol inks is that creating shadows has never been easier!

6. This tip applies to all coloring projects, not just ones using TriBlend™ markers! Before you begin coloring, consider your “light source.” If you are hoping to achieve a more dimensional look by coloring your images with shadows, you will need to decide where the fictional “light” is coming from to determine where the darker, shaded areas of our images will be. Where the “light” hits your images, these areas will be lighter.

7. Once you know where your “light” is coming from, you can begin shading your image. Start with the lightest shades and gradually work out to the darkest shades. Blend these different shades by going over the intersections with the lighter shade. Also, remember to shade while the ink is wet. Break larger images into sections in order to blend while the ink is still wet. If you color all of the lighter areas first, by the time you get to the next shade your first one will be dry.

10 Tips and Ideas for Using TriBlend™ Markers #markers #coloring #color #closetomyheart #ctmh #triblend #blend #colors

8. If you want to create an actual shadow behind an image, the lightest Brown Grey blend marker is the way to go! Color outside the lines of a stamped image, only along the parts where a shadow would fall. Consider your light source to figure out where that should be. this shadow outline will create a dimensional effect, as if your picture were propped on foam tape even though it’s not!

TriBlend™ markers can be used for so much more than just coloring a stamped image!

9. Alcohol markers are a great tool for coloring embellishments! They dry very well on non-porous surfaces, like those of gems and acrylic shapes. (Revisit this post from a few weeks ago to see more!)

10 Tips and Ideas for Using TriBlend™ Markers #markers #coloring #color #closetomyheart #ctmh #triblend #blend #colors

10. Use TriBlend™ markers to color the white core of a ripped piece of cardstock or paper, create a “wash” behind titles and sentiments, freestyle additional design elements for your projects, or even use them with a stencil!

To create a wash with your marker, it’s easiest to hold your marker horizontally to the paper and use the side of the nib rather than the tip. Also, be aware that alcohol-markers will stain any stencil that you color through. These stains will not ruin your stencil, they will simply make it more colorful!

We truly love creating with these markers, and hope you do, too! Get creative as you color your art, and experiment with the different shades each of the TriBlend™ markers has to offer.

To help you do that, we’ve put together the following color reference chart:

Download and print a free blank chart, here (here for AU/NZ), and add the three shades of each available marker color to its corresponding rectangle. (You’ll notice that the downloadable chart is two pages long, and that is because we’ve added to our color options since this top chart was created!) We’ve also added the True Black marker to the list, although it doesn’t have different shade options, in order to have all the color options available for reference in one place.

**Make your chart last longer by printing it on cardstock rather than regular printer paper, and keep it handy as you’re making color and shade choices for your artwork.**

Thanks for joining us on this colorful journey today! In the comments below, let us know how you’re using these markers and what you love about them!

Color Match Embellishments by Coloring Them In!

Color Match Embellishments #crafting #embellish #glitter #accent #adhesivebacked #color #diy #markers #wood #acrylic #plastic #cork

When creativity strikes, it can do so in a full spectrum of colors! Our exclusive colors can be found in Exclusive Inks™ stamp pads and re-inkers, shimmer brushes, embellishments, and so much more. With these products, you can achieve effortless color coordination in all of your crafting.

Sometimes, however, the embellishments that we want to use in our artwork are only available in neutral colors, such as white, wood, or cork. The good news is that you can get crafty with your embellishments as well and color them to meet your color needs!

First things first, we absolutely love all of our embellishments and the colors that they come in. We wouldn’t have them any other way, and they serve us so well in lots of art projects, as you have witnessed in the many artwork examples shown on this blog, our catalogs, and our other social media outlets. The idea today is to show you just another amazing facet to these already incredible little embellishments that can make all the difference!

Color Match Embellishments #crafting #embellish #glitter #accent #adhesivebacked #color #diy #markers #wood #acrylic #plastic #cork

(Featured above: Clear Sparkles, Bright Pink Shades TriBlend™ Marker, Dazzle Liquid Pearls™, Hibiscus Stickles™ Glitter Glue, Wild Berry Exclusive Inks™ Stamp Pad, White Pearls, Gold Yellow TriBlend™ Marker, Bisque Liquid Pearls™, Platinum Stickles™ Glitter Glue, Sundance Exclusive Inks™ Stamp Pad, Silver Glitter Gems, Dull Green TriBlend™ Marker, Sage Liquid Pearls™, Cool Mint Stickles™ Glitter Glue, Avocado Exclusive Inks™ Stamp Pad, white dots, Aqua Blue TriBlend™ Marker, Robin’s Egg Liquid Pearls™, Waterfall Stickles™ Glitter Glue, Lagoon Exclusive Inks™ Stamp Pad)

A lot of the color that we’ve added to our example embellishments can be added directly from the tool to the embellishment. For example, markers, shimmer brushes, and glitter glues, all have tips fine enough that can dispense the color right onto your choice of embellishment. When you are coloring with these sorts of tools, we encourage you to color the embellishment before adding it to your project. If it is adhesive-backed, color it while it is still on the backing sheet that it came on. For embellishments that are not adhesive-backed, use a small amount of adhesive on the back and attach it lightly to a piece of scratch paper. This way, you can color the embellishment to just the right color you want without worrying about making stray marks on your project. You can then place the newly colored embellishment after you’ve achieved the color or effect you were hoping for.

Porous surfaces, such as wood or cork, will absorb a lot of the colors—gels, glues, and embossing powder are the exceptions—whereas the color media will sit on nonporous surfaces found on embellishments like dots and gems. Regardless of the embellishment you may be garnishing, always remember to allow the color to dry in order to avoid any unwanted transfer (onto yourself or other parts of your project).

We will leave you with one final tip. If you are wanting to color match an embellishment with one of our exclusive colors, our Exclusive Inks™ are your answer! Depending on the embellishment, you may want to either use one of our stamp pads or re-inkers. If you are adding color to clear sparkles (see our Wild Berry Exclusive Inks™ example in the first set of embellishments, above), use a sponge or dauber with your ink pad. Ink the sponge, then gently dab the embellishment until the desired color is achieved. For embellishments that may require more detail, a re-inker paired with a waterbrush allows great control and precision. Place a drop of re-inker onto an all-purpose mat (or another nonporous surface that can act as your palette). Lift the ink with the brush to add color to your embellishments in a more controlled manner.

If you have any questions on any of these ideas that we shared, please let us know in the comments below and we’ll get back to you as quickly as we can!

There’s no limit to the creative ways you can add a pop of color to your artwork!

Making sure everything has a place is so important. When things are put away and organized, it lets your mind relax, allowing your mental and physical space to be creative. Just having a room that is organized can help you be more creative while crafting (and who doesn’t want that!).

Tools, ribbon, ink pads, markers, and embellishments can all have the perfect home with the Workspace Wonder system. Do you have stacks of 12″ x 12″ cardstock that need to be put away? Stacked Workspace Wonder paper trays will help with exactly that. Top them off with a large tray and a marker stack or tool cubby for additional organization space.

Keeping your craft room organized can also be a huge time-saver, making your time more efficient. What happens when you can’t find that one ink pad or marker you need to finish a project? You spend time frantically searching your craft room, and sometimes even the rest of your house. Keeping supplies like ink pads organized with Workspace Wonder is easy! You can use stamp pad stacks on the carousel base and top. One swivel, and you have exactly what you need, no frustrating search required.

Marker Shading 101

Our final stamping technique in honor of National Stamping Month is a perennial favorite: how to bring your stamped images to life using marker shading! Today’s post will show you how to get multiple color shades from a single marker.

Step One: stamp your image. If you’re not sure what ink to use, see our tips at the end of this post.

Marker Shading Technique Step 1 #ctmh #closetomyheart #diy #markers #markershading #markertechnique #flower #floral

Step Two: color your image using ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers. These markers are alcohol based, which makes them ideal for blending.

Marker Shading Technique Step 2 #ctmh #closetomyheart #diy #markers #markershading #markertechnique #flower #floral

Step Three: decide where the “light” is coming from. To create a three-dimensional effect, which is what we’re trying to achieve by shading, you must determine where the light and shadows will be. Using the colorless blender, lighten the areas of your image where the light touches it.

Marker Shading Technique Step 3 #ctmh #closetomyheart #diy #markers #markershading #markertechnique #flower #floral #highlight

Step Four: Re-color shaded areas. Using the same color markers, go over the shaded areas again to darken them.

Marker Shading Technique Step 4 #ctmh #closetomyheart #diy #markers #markershading #markertechnique #flower #floral

That’s it! Easy-peasy, right?! You can use this technique directly on a scrapbook page, a card base, or to create an original 3-D accent piece like we did with this card.

INK TIPS: The very first thing we have to do, before picking out colors or anything of the sort, is to consider if we are using the correct ink for our stamping. Which is the correct ink? Isn’t black just black? Well, it depends on your stamping surface and what you will use to color in the image. Here’s a quick breakdown for you. Our Black Exclusive Inks™ is best used for images that you will stamp in solid black. Then there’s the Archival Black Exclusive Inks™. We like to use this ink especially in our scrapbooks because it’s colorfast and truly archival. You can add color to Archival Black ink with watercolors or alcohol-based markers, even, but you must make sure it is completely dry before you do so or your image will bleed. Black Memento™ ink is a favorite because it dries quicker than Archival Black and it doesn’t bleed when you add color. We’ve also learned, however, that the Memento™ ink does not work well on vellum paper and Archival Black does. The last one of the bunch that deserves a quick mention is the StazOn™ ink. StazOn™ works well with non-porous surfaces, such as glass, metals, ceramics, etc.

All of the stamped images on today’s post were done with Archival Black ink.

Fall Décor in a Snap with Nevermore

Those of you who’ve already gotten your hands on our Nevermore paper packet probably have grand plans for fall and Halloween-themed layouts. Well, here’s another idea for you to try out 🙂 :

Nevermore Fall Banner

This fun, festive banner comes together quickly and easily with a little help from our Cricut® Artbooking and Artistry collections and, of course, the Nevermore paper packet.

What a great project to do with young children or grandchildren. They would love to watch the Cricut® cut out the leaves (because it’s even exciting for us adults to watch!), and then they could help slide the leaves onto the thread. If you don’t have any small children around, this would also be a relaxing project to work on while enjoying a little “me” time watching your favorite Julia Roberts movie and sipping some warm apple cider.

And did you notice the stamped leaves our artist colored in with the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers? With the help of last week’s post about using these markers with our stamps, you could easily do this at home. The My Acrylix® Thankful Heart stamp set supplied the leaf images, which add such character to the banner. You could even add different stamps or embellishments to match other elements of your home décor.

There are so many works of art you can create with the Nevermore paper packet. Share you own Nevermore artwork by using the hashtag #ctmhnevermore, or search for this hashtag on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest for more artwork inspiration from the Close To My Heart community.

Stamping Technique: Marker Coloring

Remember the marker chart from last week that showed you how to create our exclusive colors by blending ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers? Well, today we’re going to show you beautiful artwork that uses these formulas to fill in stamps! AND we’re going to teach you some tricks for how to do this!

Using this month’s featured paper packets, Zoe and Nevermore, our artist made these 3 adorable autumn cards:

Autumn Cards

Aren’t they cute? Using the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers to fill in stamped images is a great way to add rich, vibrant color to your artwork. Before we dive in to the specific techniques used in these cards, let’s talk about ink and paper. When filling in a stamped image with these alcohol-based markers, the ink you use to stamp your image really matters. If you stamp with a water-based ink, your image will most likely bleed and become less distinct as you color over it with the markers. We recommend using our Archival Black Exclusive Inks™ pad or other inks like the Black StazOn™ ink pad or the Tuxedo Black Memento™ ink pad.

Whatever ink you use, be sure that your ink dries completely before you use the markers. On this artwork, our artist used a craft heater to make sure the stamped images were completely dry before she grabbed her markers. We also recommend using White Daisy cardstock when blending the markers to create our exclusive colors.

So Thankful

After stamping (and drying!) the outline of these blossoms, our artist followed the marker chart to create Pomegranate, Eggplant, Sunset, and Saffron petals. As you’ll remember from our previous post, the order of the layered colors is very important, so make sure to follow the marker chart. We love how she alternated Saffron and Sunset on the largest flower! With the help of the chart, she also created Fern and Sweet Leaf leaves. Notice how the Eggplant cardstock on the base of the card matches the Eggplant blossom and pulls the card together.

Autumn Harvest

On this card, our artist used a really cool technique to get the shading on the leaf. She began by following the instructions for creating Sweet Leaf: First she colored the stamp with the Sap Green marker and then with the Pastel Green marker. To create Sweet Leaf you have to repeat these steps, so she colored it again with Sap Green, but then only colored half of the leaf with the Pastel Green, creating that ombré effect. How cool is that?

Happy Halloween

For the final card, our artist dressed this little monster up in Gypsy, Thistle, and Pear, created again by blending our markers. And don’t you just love those rosy cheeks? After coloring the face using the Barley Beige marker, the artist used the fine tip of the Light Orange marker to lightly add a few dots close together in a circle shape. She then immediately colored over the cheek a few times with Barley Beige large tip to blend the cheek in. The result—a very cute, blushing vampire.

And there you have it! A few tricks you can use when filling in your stamps with the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers. Coloring Time!

Have you ever wondered how to create our exclusive colors with the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers? Well wonder no more, because we’re about to show you how!

After some experimentation, one of our amazing artists has identified winning marker combinations that faithfully replicate the colors in our exclusive color palette. We’ve used her findings to create this marker chart that shows which marker colors to mix to create our exclusive colors.

Marker ChartPretty neat, right? Now just imagine how nicely your coloring is going to coordinate with our cardstock, Fundamentals, and B&T Duos™ in your artwork! Okay, okay, let’s dive into the details of how we created this chart so you can do it at home. Here are instructions for filling out your own marker chart:

  1. Print off the marker chart. (Use this version if you prefer “colour” to “color” 🙂 )
  2. Using our 1″ Circle Punch, punch out a circle for each color of cardstock on the chart. Attach these circles to the chart.
  3. On White Daisy cardstock, shade an area with the first marker color listed for a particular circle. Use the large tip of the marker. Then, with the ink still wet on the cardstock, shade the area with the second marker color.
  4. Some of the colors also require shading with the blender marker, additional markers, or multiple applications of specific colors. Just be sure that the ink from the previous application is still wet when applying your next color.
  5. Use our 1″ Circle Punch to punch out a circle from your marker shading, and attach it to the right of the corresponding cardstock circle.
  6. Complete steps 3 through 5 for all colors on the chart.
  7. Hang the chart in your crafting space for future reference.
  8. Do your happy dance!

Marker Chart How To

As you create this marker chart, here are a few important things to know:

  • The order in which you layer the marker colors is VERY important. Start with the first marker color, and then add the second marker color on top of the wet ink for the best results.
  • The color of the paper will affect the marker color combinations. We tested our color combinations on White Daisy cardstock.
  • Results may vary with how hard or light you press on the marker.
  • Blending markers can create a streaky texture. We love this because it makes the artwork look handmade rather than printed, so embrace the unique textures you create!

Tonight, grab your favorite beverage, some chocolate, and your printed marker chart—then slip away to your crafting space for an hour or so. It’s time to treat yourself to some well-deserved crafting time, and creating this marker chart is the perfect activity to wind down after a long day. Enjoy!
