When it comes to scrapbooking, one of the biggest deterrents for people is feeling overwhelmed by their copious amounts of unorganized photos. If you have years of memories piled up in your phone’s photo gallery, or spread between multiple devices even, it’s easy to feel discouraged and to put off preserving these moments in a much more user-friendly format. The longer you wait to sort and organize your photos, the more memories you’ll collect, and the more overwhelming the task will get—so let’s not delay and start now. Let us show you how!

Follow the step-by-step outline we’ve created, below, as we walk you through how to efficiently organize your digital photos and get them into a scrapbook! This process may take some commitment, but the journey is worth it—especially when your memories are all in order and in an album where they can be relived and shared!

Step One: Consolidate Your Digital Photos

Upload all of your digital photos to one location—your computer. We recommend using a photo managing system, like Google Photos, Amazon Photos, or iCloud, to easily transfer photos from your phone and other devices onto your computer. Amazon Photos is free* for Amazon Prime members and iCloud is best for those with multiple Apple devices (it is included on iPhones, iPads, and Macs), where it automatically updates between the Apple devices. (*As of the date of this article, this information is correct but is subject to change without our knowledge.)

Step Two: Eliminate Unwanted Photos

Once all of your photos are in one place, go through and eliminate any that aren’t worth keeping: repeats, photos with a blurry finger covering half the lens, photos of your to-do lists, etc.

A few tips: Avoid future photo hoarding by cleansing your digital photo libraries every few weeks. (Set a reminder on your schedule if you have to!) On the same note, while it’s a good idea to get in the habit of deleting subpar photos soon after you take them, don’t consider every photo that isn’t “Instagram worthy” subpar. Pause before you hit delete and allow a photo to sit for a while—especially photos of yourself (we can be so harsh on ourselves!). You might be surprised at how much joy a picture can recall regardless of how unprofessional it may appear or how much you might have hated looking at yourself when you first snapped the photo.

Step Three: Organize Your Digital Photos

In your photo managing system, create folders for each year of photos you have. Then place the corresponding photos in these folders. Once you’ve sorted your photos by year, go into each folder and create subfolders. You can label and further sort your photos by month, event, vacation, etc.

Step Four: Back Up Your Digital Photos

Back up all the photos in your photo managing system onto an external hard drive and/or a safe permanent online cloud service. You may be using a safe online cloud storage solution to sort your photos. Just make sure you also have a backup!

Step Five: Create To-Print Folders

Once you have organized your photos in your photo managing system, you’re ready to start thinking about scrapbooking them—woohoo! Even though all the photos you have left are photos you have deemed worth keeping, you may not want to scrapbook all of them. A great way to figure out which photos you want to scrapbook is to copy and paste a given folder onto your desktop. (Copy and paste, don’t just drag. We don’t want to permanently delete photos in this step.) Go through and delete any photos from this folder you don’t want to print and put in an album. This is also a good time to edit any of the photos you’re going to print, if you want to take that extra step.

Step Six: Upload & Print Photos

Once you’ve gone through all the photos on your desktop folder, you’re ready to print! We recommend creating a table, like the one below, to track each folder’s progress. When you have printed your photos, you can delete the desktop folder you created (remember, you’ve already saved these photos elsewhere!).

Tip: Choose one day every month to do a print run. Some months you may be able to afford printing more photos than other months. Whatever the circumstance, try and get in the habit of printing your photos on the same day each month.

Step Seven: Organize Printed Photos

How to Organize Years of Photos without Getting Overwhelmed #photos #memories #easyorganization #memorykeeping #digitalphotos #printing #photoorganizer #pocketscrapbooking #album #family #love #friends #ctmh #closetomyheart #photocase #photobox #scrapbooking

Option 1: Use our photo organizer to sort and keep your printed photos.

You can organize your photos by date, person, event…whatever you want! Think about the album you want to create with the photos, and sort them into each case that way.

How to Organize Years of Photos without Getting Overwhelmed #photos #memories #easyorganization #memorykeeping #digitalphotos #printing #photoorganizer #pocketscrapbooking #album #family #love #friends #ctmh #closetomyheart #photocase #photobox #scrapbooking

The photo organizer comes with 16 removable snap-close cases that can each hold up to 100 4″ x 6″ photos, while the sturdy large exterior case snaps close and comes with a convenient handle for transport. There is plenty of room to get yourself organized!

Option 2: Create a work-in-progress album.

Use one of our D-ring albums and divided Memory Protectors™ to separate out all the photos you’ll want for an album. You can group like photos together so you know how to plan your layouts.

(Going this route may even help you decide whether pocket scrapbooking is the way to go rather than traditional scrapbook layouts!)

And that’s it! The next step is to start scrapbooking away! If the idea of making the scrapbook pages themselves overwhelms you, a great place to start is with our scrapbooking workshop kits. You can also talk to your Close To My Heart Maker (or find one online!) for additional guidance.

We hope this post helps empower you to start organizing your photos for scrapbooking. We know that when you take that leap of faith, you’ll find so much joy and satisfaction in preserving your family’s memories and stories.

Vision Boards: Organizing Your Creative Dreams

For even more vision board ideas, check out our recent Vision Boards 3 Ways blog post!

Typically when we decide it’s time to organize our lives, we think about things like paper stashes, overflowing closets, garages, or the plastic containers stacked precariously in the kitchen. But are all of these things really life? Sure, they play roles in our life, but they’re hopefully not what drives us to get up in the morning.

In the spirit of this month’s call to organization, we decided to tackle a project that’s a little more elusive than cupboards and drawers: organizing your creative intentions through a vision board!

So, what’s a vision board? It’s a place to display images, words, or objects that represent what you want to be and do with your life in one beautiful, central location. Our hope is that this fun project will help you design your vision for your art and your life, all while keeping your thoughts and actions organized enough to accomplish it.

Unknown

Your vision board can become your light at the end of the tunnel during creative blocks. It will keep you motivated to continue heading toward your personal creative oasis!

Now let’s dive into what you’ll need to do to create your vision board! As with all art projects on this blog, we encourage you to use this example as a jumping off point to inspire you in your own creative pursuits. With this project in particular it is especially important for you to take your own, individual spin.

  • Start by spending some time seriously considering what you want this vision board to accomplish. What do you need to remember most in your life? Find a few words or phrases that speak to where you are in life right now. Once you’ve decided what these are, use stamps, Cricut® cuts, Picture My Life™ cards, or simply your own handwriting to express them.
  • Include lists of your creative dreams and goals. Whether that includes a list of techniques you want to learn, albums you want to finish, places you want to visit, or dreams you have for your family, writing it down and reading it every day will help you make the choices necessary to bring it from your imagination into reality.
  • Always stay on the lookout for bits and pieces of your life to add to your vision board. Surrounding yourself with bits and pieces of what you love in this world will be your sunlight on cloudy days. One simple way to do this is through your regular crafting routine. Keep your eyes open for scraps of embellishments such as ribbon, washi tape, or Complements. Cut a little more Shimmer Trim than you ended up needing for your layout? Save it and recycle it for your vision board!
  • Remember that this board is an organization tool. When your to-do list looks as cute as this, you won’t be able to resist taking care of everything on it. Even weekly schedules take on a new light when you dress them up. It’s also a great place to include other items you need to attend to, such as invitations to weddings that you’re planning on making cards or gifts for.
  • Make sure the things you include on your vision board are what you’re naturally drawn to, not what you think you should be drawn to. Remember this process needs to be fun! Let your creativity get playful and choose things out of the ordinary. Dare to do things like stamp and emboss a photo or include random scraps of doodling. The most important thing is not to overthink it; just follow your creative heart!

There you have it: the beginner’s guide to streamlining your creative life. Although our craft rooms may never stay organized, at least our creative visions can stay on track. 😉

We’d love to see how your vision boards turn out! Share your photos of your new creations, or even of boards you’ve created already, on the Close To My Heart Facebook page.

Now go create your vision!

What’s hiding in YOUR bag?

“Who steals my purse steals trash; ‘tis something, nothing;”
—William Shakespeare

This month is officially dedicated to organization! With spring coming around the corner and the new incentive for the exciting March recruiting campaign, we felt discussing organization on the blog would be quite fitting. We’ll be sharing all sorts of innovative ideas this month on how to tame your messes and channel their power for good.

Whether we hide them away in basement closets or spread them across kitchen tables, messes are simply a fact of life. There isn’t a person out there who isn’t hiding some kind of mess.

Many of us even carry our messes around with us every day of our lives! This kind of mess can easily go unnoticed because it hides behind the façade of fancy purses and bags that convincingly mask the chaos lurking beneath.

But messes aren’t all bad. Just like everything in life, we believe there is something to be learned from them. So to kick off March with a bang, we went rummaging through Close To My Heart COO Brian Holman’s bag to see what we could find (and learn)!

With photographer in tow, we headed to his office, where he dumped the contents of his bag out on his desk for everyone to see. After seeing what was inside, all we have to say is if you think only women know how to pack a bag ready for anything, think again, folks.

Here’s what came tumbling out of Brian Holman’s bag:

  • 5 Great Value™ Blueberry Açai Energy Drink Mixes
  • 1 Great Value™ Pomegranate Lemonade Energy Drink Mix
  • 1 Aulani Hawaiian Sea Salt Lotion
  • 1 red pen
  • 1 black pen
  • 1 Walt Disney black pen, complete with a light on the top
  • 1 pair of headphones
  • 1 pair of earplugs
  • 1 ZEISS Pre-Moistened Lens Cleaning Wipe
  • 1 Kleenex® On-the-Go Pack
  • 1 stylus
  • 1 eye mask
  • 1 pack of batteries
  • 1 padfolio
  • 1 bag of toiletries (Band-Aids®, Advil®, antacid, etc.)
  • 1 Apple power adapter
  • 1 Amazon Kindle
  • 1 USB car charger
  • 1 Walmart receipt
  • 1 bottle of Germ-X® Pink Berry
  • 1 glasses case
  • 1 PowerPoint clicker
  • 1 pack of Tic Tac® Freshmints

After inspecting this bag that is basically a portable arsenal decked out to combat anything from low energy levels to infected hands, we’ve come to the conclusion that Brian Holman is a man who is both on the move and exceptionally prepared. “I can put any woman’s purse to shame,” touted Brian, while repacking his belongings.

So unfortunately we have to disagree with Shakespeare on this one: A purse is not nothing—it can tell you a lot more about a person than you may realize!

Think the contents of your purse are zanier than Brian’s? We’d love to see what’s lurking in your handbag. Grab your purse or bag and dump it (or just reach in and grab something random) and let us know what you find in a comment on this post!

We’ll randomly select three winners and announce them on Friday, March 6. What is the prize, you ask? Your very own small organizer! Just our little way of helping you get a jumpstart on organizing your one, spectacular life.

Let the games begin!
