Tips for Mixing Patterned Paper

In honor of National Scrapbooking Month, we’re sharing some exclusive scrapbooking tips from our Art Studio right here on the blog! Last week we shared tips for balancing the colors on your scrapbook pages.

Today we’re going to share some tips with you for mixing patterned papers together using, of course, our Happy Times paper packet, which is available for this month only.

Here are the two pages we’ll be comparing—a sort of before and after, if you will:

Learn how to mix patterned scrapbook papers like the experts! #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #nsm #scrapbookingtips

First, let’s start with the page on the left that looks a bit like an overrun garden:

Learn how to mix patterned scrapbook papers like the experts! #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #nsm #scrapbookingtips

In the spirit of this floral fiasco, here are some whoopsie daisies (get it, daisies? 😀 ) that make this page a little bit chaotic:

Whoopsie Daisy #1: Using all of your favorite patterns at once.

Yes, these papers are beautiful, but when you use them all together on one page, your eyes don’t know where to look! You want to set a beautiful backdrop for your photos, but in this example, the photo gets lost amid a bunch of theatrics.

Whoopsie Daisy #2: Choosing only patterned papers that perfectly match.

Don’t be afraid to mix it up a little! Remember, your color scheme doesn’t have to perfectly coordinate—the individual components just have to go together.

Okay, now let’s step away from the floral fiasco and look at a more calm, harmonious, page:

Learn how to mix patterned scrapbook papers like the experts! #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #nsm #scrapbookingtips

You can really see and feel the difference, huh? Isn’t it amazing how we respond to patterns? This page has definitely transformed into something more sophisticated and balanced, so let’s talk about how it’s blossomed:

Blossom #1: Choosing one pattern to be the hero.

On this page, the floral pattern is the hero. Every other paper supports this one pattern. Here’s a good rule of thumb: Choose one bold pattern, one or two medium patterns that support the bold pattern (pretty mellow patterns), and then choose papers with very subtle patterns or solid cardstock to round off your page. Here, the wooden pattern is our medium pattern and the mint paper is our very subtle pattern.

Blossom #2: Choosing patterns that aren’t too matchy matchy.

Remember, your papers don’t have to match perfectly, they just have to go! The mint color is perfect because it still goes with the hero paper, but it’s not the main color in the hero paper so it adds variety.

We hope you found these tips to be helpful. Stay tuned for more scrapbooking tips this month on the blog!

More Mixing and Matching Magic

Last week we shared a few pieces of artwork that showed you how nicely different paper packets work together, along with tips for how to mix them. Well, we’re at it again—this time with a lovely home décor piece that is both eye-catchingly elegant and sweetly simple:

Make this beautiful paper banner for your home. #ctmh #closetomyheart #papercrafting #diyhomedecor #paperbanner #diybanner

Can you name all the paper packets used here? Zoe certainly makes a standout performance, but the sharp-eyed among you will also be able to pick out the rich hues from Sangria and the soft patterns from Georgie. We’ve also mixed in some Eggplant and Juniper cardstock  for good measure. The end result is a paper garland that you can keep up year round.

Make this beautiful paper banner for your home. #ctmh #closetomyheart #papercrafting #diyhomedecor #paperbanner #diybanner

All of the yo-yo flower shapes were cut using the Cricut® Artiste collection and are simple to assemble following the instructions in the assembly booklet that comes with the collection. The flowers were then attached to a single piece of sturdy wrapping paper either directly or using 3-D foam tape to create the garland shape. After embellishing with a few playful sequins for that little bit of bling, the banner was hung inside a well-loved frame using Whisper thick twine.

Whether you’re just trying to use up the last papers from a favorite paper packet or exploring bold color combinations of your own creation, there are lots of ways to combine different paper packets to create beautiful artwork!

We’ve loved hearing your input on how you mix paper packets. Tell us in the comments which paper packets you’re going to try mixing next!

(Paper) Heart Attack!

We’ve definitely caught the love bug here at the corporate office, but can you blame us? First of all, the weather here in Utah has been absolutely beautiful, with sunny skies and warm breezes almost every day this month! Second, Valentine’s Day, the day devoted purely to celebrating hearts (something we’re very fond of at this company), is less than a day away.

Our hearts are especially full this season with love for our dear Consultants, the lifeblood of our company, so we decided to channel this affectionate energy into a little project from the heart. We revved up our Cricut® machines and got to cutting oodles of hearts from some of our favorite papers. Then we crafted a banner, made a card, picked up some balloons, grabbed our Lagoon hearts washi tape, and hit the road for a little field trip to a special someone’s house: Presidential Director Michelle Brooks. We had so much fun sneaking around her lawn, planting hearts, and then hiding behind her house to wait for her to arrive home. When Michelle pulled into the driveway, she sat in her car for a while, just staring in disbelief at the field of hearts littering her lawn. Finally, she got out, and we ran from our hiding spots to greet her!Her adorable daughter arrived home from preschool shortly after on a bus that had a cute heart decoration of its own. It was so special to have both her and Michelle’s husband, Greg, included in the celebration.
If all of our dreams came true, we would heart attack every last one of you! But since that will always only be a crazy dream of ours, we’re asking each of you to be our hands to spread the love on our behalf. So if you’ve been looking for a way to show your love like we were, try heart attacking someone! (Just make sure you do it with paper.) Showing love with paper hearts is something that’s always in season. Plus, it’s a foolproof method for boosting happiness. It’s so easy—all you need is love! And a little paper, of course. But aren’t they kind of the same thing? 😉Happy Valentine’s Day! XOXO

Brilliant Birthdays: A Chance for the Kids to Shine

Ah, childhood birthdays. The stuff dreams are made of! Aside from the fatigued cheek muscles you exercised to make every last photo your best, your life was pretty good when birthdays were strictly about cake, ice cream, and presents.

And of course, you want the same joys for your kids. When it comes to birthdays, we, too, take too many pictures and want to get the decorations just right. We love them so much that we’re going to devote the entire month of January to the topic, and you are cordially invited to the celebration!

We adore birthdays for the fun opportunities they bring to dream up, create, and share exciting decorations and favors. We’ll be chatting about all that good stuff later in the month.

Today, however, we want to focus on a very unique opportunity a birthday lends a parent. A birthday is an excellent time to account for the changes that have accrued in your child’s life over those past 365 days. Here are some creative ideas on using birthdays to preserve the memory of your little ones while they are still little.

Confetti Wishes Birthday Page

Can you think of a better paper fit for the birthdays you’ll celebrate this year than the festive Confetti Wishes paper packet? This paper packet is spot on for such celebrations and will coordinate with your photos perfectly.

This page uses some of our favorite Picture My Life™ cards in creative ways. The mini album in the top right corner is cleverly concealed until you take a closer look—isn’t that cool?

Birthday Page Mini Album

Have your child respond to the prompts on these Picture My Life cards in their own handwriting, then turn them into your scrapbooked artwork. What a keepsake for the both of you in years to come!

Birthday Page Mini Album

Birthday Page Mini Album

Use stamps, washi tape, and other embellishments to ornament the pages of your mini album. Use pieces that will help tell the story of your child’s year and current favorites. You could use their favorite colors, stamp sentiments that fit them just right, or even tidbits of their school projects.

Confetti Wishes Birthday Page

Did you notice that not all the other cards on the page are from the Picture My Life line? That’s right, folks: many of these are handmade 3″ x 4″ cards, done with the simple punch of a corner rounder and decorated to contribute to the theme of the page. If you love the idea of creating your own Picture My Life cards, there are also dozens of adorable design options you can cut using the Cricut® Artfully Sent cartridge.

Here are some more ideas for documenting your child’s birthday with a little extra depth and personality:

• Have each guest at your child’s birthday party write a short note or memory about your child. Include these notes in a pocket on your child’s birthday page or use them to make a Picture My Life page.
• Have your child write a list of the presents they were given. Include a photo of your child with their presents as well as the thank-you cards they’ll be sending out.
• Create an extra birthday party invitation to include in your scrapbook.
• Take pictures of the cake, the food, and the decorations at your child’s birthday party. It may not seem like it now, but in a few years they will love looking back to remember the party theme!

Years from now, you and your kids will look back with delight at the memories you made and captured together. In the meantime, enjoy a slice of cake and pat yourself on the back for a job well done!

Personalized Packaging

A wise Grinch once observed that the greatest gifts come outside of packages, boxes, and bags—and that’s the truth! The best gifts you give are your time and your love, neither of which can be caught and wrapped. But a tangible gift is an attempt at expressing your feelings, and once you’ve put your heart into planning, saving for, and preparing special presents, you want to make sure they draw the attention of the intended recipients. You need something unique and heartfelt for the special people in your life. How do you achieve that? Pull out your stamps and inks, of course! What better presentation can there be than one of handmade love?

Wrapping

To take your packaging from bland to becoming:

  • Stamp it. Add elegance to your brown paper-wrapped gifts with a few stamps! Dancing images on a neutral surface will give wrapping color and class. This advent bag was decorated with the My Acrylix® Magical Days stamp set in Topiary, Cranberry, and White Daisy inks. You can even add stamping to plain tissue paper for a colorful addition.
  • Put a bow on it. Bows from the store are a dime a dozen—and they look it, too! So get creative with yours. Back your washi tape with paper and then shape it into a bow. With the help of a little Liquid Glass, the entire piece stays put. Or, for a bolder look, loop some Cranberry striped twill ribbon into a plump bow to top off your gift.
  • Tag it. Tags are not an afterthought—they’re your chance at saying it just how you mean it. Don’t depend on a store-bought sentiment to do the trick. Cut a fitting tag from the Cricut® Art Philosophy or Artiste collection, then stamp it with a fitting heartfelt sentiment. Add hand drawn borders for a cozy touch.
  • Transform it. A box shape is what they expect, so step away from traditional and draw some attention. Small gifts are especially conducive to unique packaging. A My Creations™ muslin drawstring bag makes an excellent home for smaller items, and it is 100% ready for decoration. You can stamp on the bag without the ink running, and your sentiments will stand out nicely on the neutral background. It’s unpretentious and very attractive. (Such a good combination should go down in history.) Another great option: the triangle box! Cut one from the Cricut® Artiste cartridge, then add golden embossed stamping for a truly unique presentation.

The wrapping you use shouldn’t come from a store; let the wrapping you use mean a little bit more! We wish you a very merry time playing with your favorite Close To My Heart products to create new and charming ways to present your treasures.
