How to Throw an Award-Winning Oscars Party!

It’s almost time for the biggest movie awards night of the year: the Academy Awards, AKA the Oscars! You love watching the red carpet arrivals (those dresses!), you love guessing who will win each award, and you love doing it all with friends and family. Why not throw an official Oscars party, then? We’ve got a lineup of great ideas to help make your party worthy of a standing ovation! How to throw an award-winning Oscars party. #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhgiveaway #paperaddict #party #oscars

A central component of every good party is GOOD FOOD! Cakes are great at pulling double duty, serving as edible centerpieces to your spread. Make your cake the star of the show with a few simple star toppers cut from glitter paper! And what could be a better treat for a night celebrating the best films of the year than popcorn? How to throw an award-winning Oscars party. #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhgiveaway #paperaddict #party #oscars

Little popcorn boxes make it much easier for everyone to munch throughout the night without passing around a bowl, and they make your guests feel like they’re at a movie theater. Dressing up your boxes so they look like tuxedos is an easy way to give your party a definite Oscars flair, and our Cricut® collections make them so easy to throw together. How to throw an award-winning Oscars party. #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhgiveaway #paperaddict #party #oscars

Rather than going the plastic cup and permanent marker route to keep track of everyone’s drinks, add some sparkle to your sodas and create these personalized name tags! These stars are super simple to make, but they’re just the kind of detail that will make your guests feel like VIPs.

Okay, now on to activities. We love these free printable Oscars bingo cards from The House That Lars Built. Come up with a fun prize to give the person who gets bingo first.

Also, since the celebrities get their photos taken all night long, we think another way to have fun with your guests is by having a photo shoot of your own! You may have spotted those adorable prop sticks in a vase, playing the role of a simple décor piece in that first photo, but they are also great way to make everyone less camera shy, AND they can be sent home with your guests as souvenirs from your fun night. You can even create your own Polaroid-style frame. This activity is sure to get everyone laughing, and by the end of the night, you’ll have tons of great photos to share!

To add to the drama of the evening, we want to give away some awards of our own! In the comments below, make three guesses, one for each of these categories: Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, and Actress in a Leading Role. Make sure to have your guesses in before February 28, because after the Oscars, we’ll go through all the comments to see who guessed right and select 30 winners as follows:

The first 15 people to correctly guess the winner of ONE of the categories will receive the beautiful Everyday Life™ album.

The first 10 people to correctly guess the winner of TWO categories will receive the Everyday Life album, the My Crush® Everyday Life pages, and the Everyday Life washi tape.

The first 5 people to correctly guess the winner of all THREE categories will get the Everyday Life prize package, including the album, the My Crush Everyday Life pages, the Everyday Life washi tape, both the 4″ x 3″ and the 4″ x 6″ Memory Protectors™, and the Picture My Life™ Live Your Day cards—which are no longer available for purchase!

Start making your decorations, and submit your guesses here on the blog! It’s sure to be a night to remember!

A Fun Way to “Spruce” Up Your Valentine’s Day Décor

As a crafter, you’re always looking for new projects and new ideas. With Valentine’s Day coming up, here’s one we’ve fallen head over heels for: a heart tree!Learn how to make this adorable heart tree for Valentine's Day! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #Valentines #decor #hearts

This would make a great accent piece for your living room, and if you made a few, you could make a really cute mantle display or centerpiece arrangement. These trees are super easy and affordable to make, especially since we’re going to show you how! We’ll even include some insider’s tips.

First, you’ll need to get a styrofoam tree (or trees!) and a bunch of ½” straight pins, which you can get from almost any craft store. Next, put your Cricut® to work cutting out hearts—a lot of them! ☺ We cut these hearts at 1 ½”. 2 sheets each of 4 colors of paper should be plenty to cover one tree.

Insider’s tip #1: You’ll want to turn the pressure up pretty high on your Cricut® machine when you cut the glitter paper.Learn how to make this adorable heart tree for Valentine's Day! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #Valentines #decor #hearts

After you’ve cut all your hearts, flip your first heart upside down. Using a straight pin, attach the heart to the bottom of the tree: The curved part of the heart should be in line with the bottom of the tree, and the pin should be placed near the point of the heart. Continue this technique to create a row of hearts on the bottom of the tree. Let the hearts overlap slightly. Next, add another row just above your first. Focus on filling the gaps between the hearts and covering the pinheads from the first row. You can either make each row its own color or alternate colors within rows—it’s totally up to you! When you get to the top of the tree, glue the tips of the hearts together to create a point.

Insider’s tip #2: If you plan on saving your tree to use year after year, use styrofoam glue instead of or in addition to the straight pins. The tree may take longer to finish, but it will be less delicate.

And that’s it—we told you it was easy! 🙂 Now you’re ready to welcome this holiday of caring and sharing into your home and heart, and with that . . .

Insider’s tip #3: Love what you’ve created!

New Year’s Eve Favors

2016 is right around the corner, which means it’s time to party–and we have the perfect party favors you can make for your guests! They’ll even complement the Kaleidoscope party décor we shared a couple of weeks ago. Pull out your Cricut® and Kaleidoscope paper packet for this one, and get ready to create these lil’ show-stoppers:Make your New Year's Eve party a "blast" with these poppers! #ctmh #CloseToMyHeart #party #NewYear's

These will be the life of the party even before they’re opened! First, pick your favorite Kaleidoscope paper design. Bright colors and festive designs make Kaleidoscope an easy choice for this type of project.

Next, cut your Cricut® shape out of your chosen paper using the Artiste cartridge. The Artiste cartridge also comes with a handy instructional booklet that will show you how to fold it into its 3D shape!

Last, bling it up! Add some sparkle with glitter paper, shimmer trim, and sparkly embellishments!

As fun as these popper-like favors look on the outside, you can make them even MORE fun by putting surprises inside before sealing them shut. When your guests are ready, they can rip open an end to find a special treat—maybe a few pieces of candy, a “fortune” for the new year, or even a little toy! Just like that, you’ve got a fun, unique gift everyone will enjoy!

To finish off your popper, we’ve got an extra fun idea— confetti! Pull out your triangle border punch, and cut out pieces of Kaleidoscope paper, glitter paper, cardstock, or all of the above! The hole in each end of the popper is big enough that you can insert the confetti even after assembling the popper.

Pop on over to our Kaleidoscope party décor post to finish off your party plans, and enjoy creating these paper poppers! 🙂

A Close To My Heart Christmas Party!

Here at Close To My Heart, we know that the Christmas season is a time for celebration! This week, we had our annual Christmas party here at the Home Office. It’s always such a pleasure to gather together as friends and coworkers, relax, and spread some Christmas cheer.Check out our Close To My Heart Christmas Party! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #Christmas #partyFirst came a lunch catered by Tucanos Brazilian Grill, and boy, was it tasty! We enjoyed our meal with Christmas music in the background and icicle-style lights above our heads.

After the food, we celebrated employee birthdays and longevity milestones. We applauded people who have been with us for five, ten, fifteen, and even twenty years! The loyalty of our employees to this company always fills us with gratitude.Check out our Close To My Heart Christmas Party! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #Christmas #partyBut the party wasn’t over. Next, Monica and Brian began drawing names and giving out fabulous prizes to the lucky winners! By the time they’d finished, dozens of gifts had been handed out, which certainly upped the merriment!Check out our Close To My Heart Christmas Party! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #Christmas #partyDoes everyone look happy or what? Deck the Halls with Papercrafting!

December is here, and you know what that means—it’s party season! Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or other special celebrations, you’re bound to host at least one festive event soon, and Close To My Heart wants to help make your party the cutest one on the block!

First let’s welcome in Christmas —or rather, let this Christmas banner welcome your guests in!Create decor for your Christmas or New Year's Eve party! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #party #decorFor this banner, layering is the name of the game. Chocolate cardstock letters behind their Cranberry counterparts create a shadowed look, and the holly leaves appear beautifully real thanks to two layers in different colors of cardstock.

For an adorable centerpiece, it’s amazing how well a wrapped box and some Cricut® ingenuity can “spruce” up some sprigs, eh? 🙂 Learn more about how to make those beautiful blossoms by watching this video:

Here’s one other tip to keep in mind when replicating this centerpiece: The holly berry branches are actually three pieces of cardstock. Cut two Chocolate branches, and cut off the berries. Then cut one Cranberry branch, and glue it in between the Chocolate branches sandwich style. With all this help, you’ll create a showstopper centerpiece that will have your guests “oohing” and “ahhhing!”

And of course no party is complete without some cupcakes! Our Cricut® Artiste collection includes all sorts of cupcake liners. Some glittery stars make great cupcake toppers and tie all of these pieces together. The stars were cut out of gold glitter paper with the help of our Cricut® Artbooking collection, and they really make this trio the perfect ensemble!

But even if your party isn’t for Christmas, we’ve got you covered! If you’re celebrating New Year’s Eve, a birthday, or something else entirely, then the Kaleidoscope paper packet is your new best friend!Create decor for your Christmas or New Year's Eve party! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #party #decorCreate decor for your Christmas or New Year's Eve party! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #party #decorThis banner is certain to brighten up any room it’s in (even on the coldest winter nights!), and it’s perfect for celebrations all year round. To get this look, attach strips of paper together (so they have the same pattern on each side), and stitch them in a long line with your sewing machine. Voila!

The party centerpiece here is just as spunky as the banner! In addition to being a great decoration, the decorated sticks could be used for super fun photos, party games, or favors.

And just as it added class to our Christmas pieces, our gold glitter paper is back! These liners have a non-glittery paper on the inside of the liners to keep the glitter on the outside! The cupcakes are topped off with spunky little tassels of cardstock, cut and glued around the tops of toothpicks. They look kind of like fireworks, and they’re just the thing to “spark” a conversation with your guests.

We know you’ll enjoy creating these beautiful pieces of artwork—and we know you’ll love the compliments that will follow, too! No matter what you’re celebrating in the coming weeks, may all your celebrations be merry and bright!

Dinner Is Served—In Style!

Maybe you volunteered for it because you enjoy making everybody comfortable. Maybe you were stuck with it because your dining room is actually big enough. For whatever reason, you’ve got it: Hostess Duty. The big dinner is already too close for comfort, and it’s only getting closer.

No fear! Whether you’re in charge of your family’s Thanksgiving gathering or another large dinner party, Close To My Heart will help you get prepared. We want you to be able to focus on the most important part of any party—the people! With that in mind, we’ve created printable thank you cards and conversation starter cards that will help you create wonderful memories as you gather around the table. Take a look at this Thanksgiving place setting:
Create beautiful Thanksgiving place settings! #closetomyheart #ctmh #thanksgiving #dinner #autumn #fall #gratitudeBeautiful, right? The thank you card and the conversation starter card add a personal touch to this elegant place setting. In this example, the thank you card was printed on kraft cardstock, trimmed out, matted on paper from the Urban paper packet, and topped off with a bow made from gold glitter paper—so simple!
And as you’ll notice at the bottom of the card, our printable thank you card includes a spot for you to type in your name or family name! This will make the cards personal yet ridiculously quick and easy to put together.

Now let’s take a closer look at the other piece of this place setting:
Create beautiful Thanksgiving place settings! #closetomyheart #ctmh #thanksgiving #dinner #autumn #fall #gratitudeConversation starter cards are a fun way to get people around the dinner table to put away their phones and enjoy the company right in front of them. We’ve created two different sets of conversation starters—one for children and one for adults. Simply print them out, cut them up, and attach them to a folded piece of paper as you see here. You could also cut them up and place them in a container to be passed around the table and have each person take their turn drawing a prompt.

Lend an autumn feel to your Thanksgiving place setting by attaching stamped images to your cards. This colorful leaf comes from the My Acrylix® Thankful Heart stamp set and has been colored with watercolor paints and attached the card with 3-D foam tape. Slightly curling the edges of the leaf upward makes it look ready to blow right off the card, doesn’t it?

Because we know you host special dinner parties throughout the year, we’ve designed both the thank you card and the conversation starters to work year-round—they’re not Thanksgiving-specific. Take a look at another place setting to see what we mean:
Create beautiful place settings for your next gathering! #closetomyheart #ctmh #dinner #dinnerparty #thankyou #gratitudeWhatever the reason is for holding your special dinner party, we hope you get to enjoy the food, people, and the feelings of gratitude. Your guests certainly will! And remember—snap some photos of those special memories!

Our very talented artist had several tricks up her sleeve, so as a special treat, let us reveal some of her secrets. 🙂

  • This piece features several Cricut® cut pieces: two haunted houses (one in Black and one in Whisper, for a haunting shadow effect), two fences, one crow, three strips of grass, one tag, one circle (transformed into a moon with some watercolors), and the letters for the spooky poem—these letters were cut out of the Sangria ombre paper and then backed with Black cardstock. You’ll find the sizes our artist used in the recipe list at the end of this post.
  • Nevermore Complements are used all over the project. Some, like the witch and the spooky tree, are used exactly as they come; others, like the black cat and one of the jack-o-lanterns, are slightly altered, having been trimmed out of larger pieces from the Complements.
  • The stars in the sky were stamped on using the My Acrylix® Charming Cascades stamp set.
  • And finally, that creepy door is a piece of Desert Sand B&T Duos™ paper from the Sangria paper packet. Our artist colored it with the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ Clay marker and hung a hand-lettered sign on it.

There—you now have several different décor ideas for all your spooky celebrations. Whether you choose just one or two to make or create them all, they are sure to make your party a smash! Happy crafting!

Smiles All Around: Summer Party Fun

DSCN3213

We’ve been talking a lot about travel this month—with two more travel posts still to come 🙂 —but when it comes to having fun, we know that there is plenty to be found when you stay close to home, too! Though it has been a full, busy summer here at Close To My Heart, we know how important it is to cut loose and party once in a while! Our annual summer party is always a great time to come together with our families and celebrate all the great things we’ve accomplished.

This year’s festivities took place at the Provo Beach Resort, where we enjoyed bowling, laser-tag, croquet, a ropes course, and tons of other fun activities.

As you can see from all the photos, this year’s summer party was full of smiles. We don’t know about you, but for all the great work that these people do day in and day out for Close To My Heart, we think that those smiles are well-deserved!

We truly cherish these moments to celebrate our relationships with family and friends. Close To My Heart is a company where every relationship matters, and our annual summer party was a great way to create the type of memories that matter most in life.

From Jeanette: A Case of the Convention Butterflies

It’s that time again. The time of year when Convention is so close I get butterflies! Everyone at Close To My Heart has been fluttering around the office preparing for our favorite event of the year. Whether it’s ordering t-shirts, designing posters, shooting videos, crafting Base & Bling necklaces, or writing awards scripts, it seems that every person in the building is busy creating to make this Convention the best one yet.

We snapped a few candid photos to give you a sneak peek of what’s been going on around these parts. Don’t worry; we didn’t reveal anything major; we are saving up the secrets to all our Convention surprises—big and small—until we are with you at the Disneyland® Hotel.

Logo Items

Logo items, anyone? If you ordered some, they’ll be arriving in your arms shortly!

This year I’m especially looking forward to the meet and greet opportunities of Convention. I feel so privileged to get to spend some time chatting with the contest winners about life, business, and all things paper and ink. I wonder who they will be!

Final Preparations

The Events team is hard at work putting together the final pieces needed to throw the greatest party of the year.

Being surrounded by your positive energy and enthusiasm is another reason why I look forward to attending Convention. When I see your lovely faces beaming up at me while I’m on stage, it makes me incredibly happy. I hope you realize you are the reason I do what I do.

Designer

Our artists and designers are hard at work putting the finishing touches on all things Convention.

But the meet and greet contest is only the beginning. Convention is always a never-ending flow of prizes, awards, and freebies that rain down in some way or another upon all in attendance, and this year they will be bigger than ever! Flights to the Brisbane Convention, free incentive trips, Instax cameras, and loads of new products—it’s Christmas in July! 🙂

Boxes

We’ve got loads of empty boxes just waiting to be packed with goodies to be shipped off to Anaheim in only a few short days.

And, of course, how could I not mention Disneyland itself? Basking in the California sunshine at the “happiest place on earth” is a guaranteed recipe for fun. Because this will be our last year celebrating Convention at Disneyland, things will feel a little bittersweet.

Here's a look behind the scenes at one of our recent video shoots.

Here’s a look behind the scenes of one of our recent video shoots.

I’ll miss this wondrous sunny paradise, but I’m excited to experience the adventures the new locales will bring in the years to come. Next year we’ll be back at the beautiful Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, but for now, I’ll soak Up 😉 every minute of Anaheim I can get.

Awards

The awards are about to be etched with the names of this year’s winners! So exciting!

If you haven’t already registered to attend Convention, know that today is the last day to do so! We would love for you to join us at the greatest party of the year. You can register here. If you’ve already registered, I’ll see you next month at Make It From Your Heart Convention 2015!

Sticky Boy's countdown chain

Of course, Sticky Boy has his own countdown for the big event. 29 days left!

We’re counting down the days. <3
