20 Pocket Scrapbooking Tips & Ideas

For a lot of us, September marks the beginning of one of the busier times of the year. The “-ber” months. With the start of a new and unique school year, followed by the most celebrated family centered seasonal time, including fall festivities, then Thanksgiving, and eventually Hanukah and Christmas, during which we try to cram as much jubilee as possible into our already busy lives—we all have so much going on, and it may feel like there is just no time to dedicate to preserving all of these fond, albeit sometimes somewhat hectic, memories.

What if we told you that scrapbooking can be fast, simple, and easy! It is a perfect time to discover, or rediscover, the simplicity of scrapbooking in pockets! By using Memory Protectors™ with multiple pockets, you can quickly catch up on your scrapbooking or just add photos, art, and journaling (and any other keepsake that you can fit into a pocket) to your albums.

From how to tell a story to the creating of the artwork that goes along with it, pocket scrapbooking is a memory keeping style all its own. If you are new to this style of scrapbooking or are simply looking for inspiration for your pages, we’ve compiled a list of artwork tips and ideas for you below!

Pocket Scrapbooking Tips & Ideas:

1. Fill no more than half your pockets on a page with non-photo elements.

2. Stick to a color palette, pulling color ideas from your photos.

3. Use Picture My Life™ pocket cards (designed to coordinate with each other in theme and color).

Pocket Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #picturemylife #pocketscrapbooking #ctmhtimber #memorykeeping #storytelling #scrapbooking

4. Design and make your own pocket cards from papers, Thin Cuts, stickers, and stamps. (This is a great way to use up some of your scraps, too!)

5. Fill pockets with other things, besides cards or photos (ticket stubs, loose Cricut® shapes, sequins, etc.).
Tip: We sealed the sequins pocket you see in our example so the sequins wouldn’t fall out.

6. Make a statement and split large titles or photos into multiple squares.
Tip: Consider printing a large 6 x 8 photo and split it up into several pockets!

7. Use the negative space of a Cricut® shape to create a pocket card. If the space is large enough, back it with a light color cardstock and use the space for journaling. If you are cutting several small shapes (like our 2019 below), back it with cardstock or any other paper that will add interest to your layout.

Pocket Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #picturemylife #pocketscrapbooking #memorykeeping #storytelling #scrapbooking

8. Add a sentiment to your photos by stamping directly on them
Tip: If your photo has any sort of finish on them, we recommend you use StazOn™ ink. If it is a truly matte photo, Archival Black is a good choice.

9. Don’t want to stamp on your photos but want a similar effect? Stamp directly onto the pocket Memory Protector™ with StazOn™ ink, instead.

10. Add embellishments to the outside of the Memory Protectors™.

11. Use Flip Flaps™! If you have too many photos or things that you want to work into a page but not enough pockets (or enough to fill whole other page) add these stick on pockets that flip up (or in any direction that you attach them) to reveal whatever is underneath!

12. Similarly, if you have too many photos for a traditional scrapbook layout, and don’t want to create another layout with all of the remaining photos, use pocket pages to display these.

Pocket Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #picturemylife #pocketscrapbooking #ctmhsummervibes #memorykeeping #storytelling #scrapbooking

13. If you have a piece of memorabilia to display that is too small for a pocket, mount it onto a piece of paper that will fit.

14. Create a window to the next page in your album by partially filling a pocket (use a smaller photo, half a pocket card, etc.).

15. Number your photos to give your page or layout a more narrative direction. Take this a step further by adding numbered journaling to a pocket card that corresponds with the numbered photos.

16. Create color visual triangles. This means to purposefully place the same color in three different places that, when connected, form a triangle.

17. Don’t have time, or care for, writing in full paragraphs? Use bullet journaling to keep track of the details of a memory!

18. If one of your pockets is holding a card that you want to remember to pull out when you revisit the page, add a tab along the edge of the card on the open side of the pocket.

19. Easily add some visual interest to your photos by trimming them down ¼” and mounting them on a piece of paper that fits the pockets exactly, creating a border around your photos.

20. Sometimes things don’t fit in pockets—like notes, journal pages, your grandma’s favorite clock—take photos of these things to include them in your stories.

21. We said 20, so this one is a bonus: plan ahead. If you know you will be going on a tropical vacation, or camping, or pumpkin picking—there are activities that you know for certain you will be participating in (playing on the beach, sitting around a camp fire, walking through a pumpkin patch, etc.). When you are scrapbooking with pockets, it’s easy to lay out some pages really quickly for these types of events without having the photos yet. Once you have them, add them. If you don’t like the way it’s laid out, rearrange! Easy-peasy!

5 Approaches to Pocket Scrapbooking

Today is the day, if you haven’t already, to discover the simplicity of scrapbooking in pockets! That’s right. Scrapbooking CAN be fast, simple, and easy. By using Memory Protectors™ with multiple pockets, you can quickly catch up on your scrapbooking or just add photos, art, journaling, and other keepsakes in this trendy blocked style to any of your albums. But where do we start?

Too often, we get so eager to try out a new memory keeping approach only to end up staring at the Memory Protectors™ and their empty pockets, not quite sure how to begin. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, we start without a plan and find that something about our completed pages just isn’t quite right. If you take a look below, you’ll see that we came up with different ideas to get you thinking about how to create a pocket page or layout, and to get you up to speed on this popular style of scrapbooking!

1. Start with a set of photos.

5 Approaches to Pocket Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhsomuchhappy #ctmhfeelslikehome #pocketscrapbooking #blockscrapbooking #freepattern #scrapbookpattern #picturemylife #pocketcards #everydaylifeWe all have stashes of photos, mainly on our electronic devices. Print out some of your favorites and give this approach a try. Once you’ve got your photos, choose a color scheme by pulling from the colors in your photos first and then, if you’d like, add one or two colors that coordinate. Lastly, choose accessories or embellishments for the finishing touches.

If you aren’t quite sure how many photos to use, consider the 50-50 rule where you fill 50% of your pockets with photos and the other 50% with patterned papers or pre-made pocket cards—ensuring a well-balanced page and layout.

2. Start with a color scheme.

5 Approaches to Pocket Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhsomuchhappy #ctmhfeelslikehome #pocketscrapbooking #blockscrapbooking #freepattern #scrapbookpattern #picturemylife #pocketcards #everydaylifeThis approach is very similar to the first, only the color scheme comes first and then the photos. When you have an album that you are wanting to add on to, the color scheme is often predetermined by what’s come before. In this example, we chose our colors first, then came up with the photos, and polished off the layout with some sequins as our accessory. If you don’t have enough, or any, photos that you’d like to use to match your color scheme, manipulate the colors in the photo. If you’re not savvy with photo editing software or want to keep things simple, print your photos in black and white.

As you’re deciding on what photos to use, keep in mind that you are not bound by the orientation or size of the pockets of your Memory Protectors™. In both of the examples that we’ve shown you so far, we cut a 6″ x 8″ photo in half and inserted the parts into two of the pockets. You can get really creative and do all sorts of things with pockets that you can’t quite get away with in a traditional layout. 😉

3. Start with a story.

5 Approaches to Pocket Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhsomuchhappy #ctmhfeelslikehome #pocketscrapbooking #blockscrapbooking #freepattern #scrapbookpattern #picturemylife #pocketcards #everydaylifeThis third method is for the storyteller. You start out with a memory or story and then find photos that accompany it. In this example, the story is about Grandma Joann and her garden. The reminiscence and words came first, then the photos, and lastly the embellishing accessories.

If a 12″ x 12″ album is too big to fit on your shelf, there’s also the 6″ x 8″, Everyday Life™, option. All of the ideas that we’re sharing today translate into any size of pocket scrapbooking.

4. Start with an event.

5 Approaches to Pocket Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhsomuchhappy #ctmhfeelslikehome #pocketscrapbooking #blockscrapbooking #freepattern #scrapbookpattern #picturemylife #pocketcards #everydaylifeOur last approach is to begin with an event, like a birthday party, vacation, holiday, family gathering, etc. Think about the story behind it and develop it. This is where the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when, why) come in handy. As you develop the story, write it down and choose photos that support it. Finally, add an accessory for embellishment.

5. Come up with a pattern.

If the ideas that we’ve shared so far are overwhelming, find a pocket layout that you like and break it down into a pattern for you to recreate and personalize (it’s pretty easy to do this with pockets). Here’s what the pattern of our very first example looks like:

5 Approaches to Pocket Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhsomuchhappy #ctmhfeelslikehome #pocketscrapbooking #blockscrapbooking #freepattern #scrapbookpattern #picturemylife #pocketcards #everydaylife

We used this very same pattern to create the layout in our second example. Did you notice? We rotated each of the pages 90 degrees counterclockwise and came up with this:

5 Approaches to Pocket Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhsomuchhappy #ctmhfeelslikehome #pocketscrapbooking #blockscrapbooking #freepattern #scrapbookpattern #picturemylife #pocketcards #everydaylife

(You can download this pattern, here.)

Flip a pattern, turn it on its side, switch the order of the pages—if you have the Memory Protectors™ to support your pocket idea, then go for it! One of the great things about pocket scrapbooking is that you can change the contents of the pockets around however many times you need to, making it a lot more forgiving than traditional scrapbooking.

All you need to be a successful pocket scrapper are the pocket Memory Protectors™, pre-made pocket cards, your photos, and a plan. Pair any of the ideas that we’ve shared with you today with our Picture My Life™ pocket cards and get caught up on your scrapbooking in a fast, simple, easy, AND trendy way!

**All of our Picture My Life™ pocket cards are 35% off, now and through the end of the month. It’s a great time to stock up!

Included in every one of our new suite paper packets will be two cut-apart sheets. One side will have a customary 12″x 12″ design while the other side will feature a variety of shapes and sentiments that coordinate with the specific paper collection it belongs to. As the name implies, you cut these shapes and sentiments apart with scissors and use them as titles and accent pieces for your pages and cards.

Also new to each paper collection is a coordinating set of Picture My Life™ cards. In the past, a new catalog came with two sets of Picture My Life™ cards whose color schemes would match two of the catalog’s paper suites. This time around, we are doing things a little bit differently. Instead of offering two sets of pocket cards in our new catalog, there are FOUR sets of Picture My Life™ cards. Each set corresponding to one of the paper collections not just in color but in theme as well. Including additional photos to your layouts and albums with our pocket Memory Protectors™ just got easier!

Embossing Folders

They’re baaack! We just can’t help playing with paper, and what a fun and easy way to do so with an embossing folder! Embossing folders make adding depth and texture to any of our papers a cinch! For your crafting arsenal, we have two new embossing folders, the Playful Scallops and Swiss Dot. Create some lasting impressions, as you get crafty with these new patterns!

Paper Pals

se1-stamps-paper-palsThere are a few new kids (and pets) in town and they’re all made out of paper! Say hello to the Paper Pal stamp and Thin Cuts! And, better yet, if you like them all, get the Paper Pal Bundle, including all four stamp + Thin Cuts sets, and save over 10%!

Stitched Frames and Quilt Shapes

Thin-Cuts-stitched-frames-and-quilt-shapes

The Stitched Square Frames and Stitched Rectangle Frames Thin Cuts are an easy way to mat photos, journaling, and anything else you want to highlight in your art. Each of the dies included in the sets cuts two shapes: one stitched frame piece and a ½” smaller inside shape with stitching around its border. The Stitched Quilt Shapes Thin Cuts were designed to add stitched patterns and cut solid shapes that nestle perfectly inside the frames for effortless paper quilting!

Watercolor Die-cuts

watercolor-die-cuts

The Feels Like Home watercolor die-cuts are floral designs that come printed on two 6″ x 6″ watercolor papers. Add color using your favorite watercolor paints or pencils and then punch them out to embellish your artwork. These die-cuts coordinate with the Feels Like Home collection but, as you can see, they are customizable to other color schemes and your liking!

Story by Stacy™ Stories I Love

The Stories I Love workshop kit provides a place to gather the photos that mean the most to you and document the stories that go along with them! The included instructional workbook explains how to explore the memories behind the photos you treasure and then write a detailed story to capture all of the elements of that moment!

My Acrylix® Word Search Highlights

We can’t wrap this list up without showcasing at least a couple standalone stamp sets. The My Acrylix® Word Search Highlights stamp set is one of the many in the Seasonal Expressions 1 catalog that will brighten someone’s day. With a fun word search hiding sentiments for all sorts of occasions, you can quickly and easily create a fun and meaningful card.

A Journaling Model for When You’re Lost for Words

The important thing about memory keeping is preserving our stories.

The Important Things #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhimportantthings #importantthings #everdaylife #minialbum #journaling #scrapbooking #theimportantbook #MargeretWiseBrown #family

With how easily accessible cameras are to us these days, we have been trained over the years to take photos of absolutely everything we experience. From an outing with friends last weekend to the coffee you picked up this morning, we are certain you have photos that you love but aren’t quite sure what to do with. You may have posted some of these on a social media channel and received a bazillion likes, but now that the moment is over you would like to preserve these memories somewhere more permanent. As one of our blog readers you know we’re going to suggest to you that scrapbooking is the answer. (And it is!) But, how do we scrapbook and journal about a cup of coffee?

Today we’re sharing a journaling style that allows us to talk about pretty much any topic under the sun that is based on The Important Book written by Margaret Wise Brown. In her book, the author dedicates a two-page spread to individual common, everyday things—like the sky, an apple, grass, and rain. On one page is an illustration of the subject and on the opposite page is a short passage describing it, starting and ending with what she considers is the most important attribute:

The important thing
about a spoon is
that you eat with it.
It’s like a little shovel,
You hold it in your hand,
You can put it in your mouth,
It isn’t flat,
It’s hollow,
And it spoons things up.
But the important thing
about a spoon is
that you eat with it.

Brown made talking about a spoon easy and interesting. If we apply the same principles used to describe this otherwise seemingly mundane subject in our journaling, the occasion will be rare, if at all, where we will be truly stuck with nothing to say.

So, how do we do it? We put together a handy worksheet to help us get started.

The Important Things #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhimportantthings #importantthings #everdaylife #minialbum #journaling #scrapbooking #theimportantbook #MargeretWiseBrown

(Download The Important Things worksheet PDF.)

First, what is your topic? Write it down. Then, write down as many words and thoughts as you can think of that describe this topic. Your words, your thoughts—this is your story. Next, from all of these things you just wrote down, what stands out to you as the most important? This attribute is how you will start and finish your journaling passage. Use all the other information and details to fill in the middle.

When you are first starting to use this journaling method, stick to the formula on our worksheet to avoid any problems or confusion. As you get more familiar with this way of journaling, then start changing some of the words up (but not the order!).

Here’s a scrapbook layout about our cup of Joe:The Important Things #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhimportantthings #importantthings #everdaylife #minialbum #journaling #scrapbooking #theimportantbook #MargeretWiseBrown #coffee

The first and last lines in the journaling are the same thought, “The important thing about coffee is how it creates small moments of joy.” All of the in between stuff is insightful into how our friend in the layout feels about coffee, however, there is no question as to why it means all of those things to her. She let’s us know what the important thing about coffee is as she starts to write about it and then circles back to remind us as she closes her remarks.

To help highlight the unique things that are important to you, we paired this journaling model with a 6″ x 8″ album and designed The Important Things Everyday Life™ workshop. (Getting a copy of The Important Book itself, though recommended, is completely optional.)

The Important Things #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhimportantthings #importantthings #everdaylife #minialbum #journaling #scrapbooking #theimportantbook #MargeretWiseBrown

Each of the eight layouts can feature something that is uniquely important to you, with a large open space on one page for your journaling and the facing page created to add photos illustrating whatever topic you choose to document.

Take a look at these other completed examples from The Important Things album and see how the important thing journaling style is applied to each subject.

3 Ways to Use Our White Pines Picture My Life™ Cards

December’s knocking! Around here that means hot cocoa sipping, gift giving, gingerbread house making, tree trimming, and Christmas caroling—all the Yuletide merriment that makes this the most wonderful time of the year.

We know these memories are precious, and we want to preserve every single one. That’s why we’ve made the Picture My Life™ White Pines scrapbooking program different from all the others—in addition to an array of adorable journaling and title cards, this collection also includes a card for each of the first 25 days of December! Today, we’re going to share with you three great ways to use these cards.

1. The 25 Pages of Christmas

Three ways to use our White Pines Picture My Life™ Cards this holiday season! #Christmas #PML #closetomyheart #ctmh

Create a pocket scrapbook page for each day leading up to Christmas! Our Picture My Life™ White Pines cards make it quick and easy to document each day because you can add your journaling, and then slide the cards and photos into place.

2. A Binder Ring Flipbook

Another idea to try out is creating a flipbook by hole punching the cards and sliding them onto a binder ring. In addition to using the cards for base pages, you can also use the 4″ x 3″ cards for matting photos, journaling, and creating tabs. The White Pines Complements make embellishing this little album quick and easy, and for a finishing touch, create a tassel out of Poppy thick twine to attach to the binder ring.

3. Christmas Home Decor

Three ways to use our White Pines Picture My Life™ cards this holiday season! #Christmas #PML #closetomyheart #ctmh
What should you do with your leftover cards? Use them to create beautiful home décor, of course! Frame a single card, or use the dated cards to invent your own advent calendar. Here, we’ve simply cut tree shapes from a few different cards and sewed them onto a piece of cardstock. We then “trimmed” our trees with a few dainty embellishments, like our red gems, bitty sparkles, and enamel stars!

There you have it: three ways to use the Picture My Life™ White Pines scrapbooking program to celebrate the joy of the holiday season!

Want to win these fun cards? 🙂 Then check out our Facebook and Instagram posts tomorrow to start participating in our Christmas Countdown Challenge.

How does it work? Well, during the first 25 days of December, we’ll be posting daily prompts on Instagram and Facebook inviting you to take your own photos and share them using the hashtag #ctmhcountdown. These prompts are designed to help you document each special moment as you prepare for Christmas Day!

Each week, we’ll draw a winner from those who have shared their photos on Instagram and send them their very own Picture My Life™ White Pines scrapbooking program! Then, on December 28, we’ll select five winners from those who have posted every day on either Instagram or Facebook. The prize for these five winners will be a My Legacy™ Cocoa Damask D-Ring album, a Picture My Life White Pines scrapbooking program, and a Memory Protectors™ variety pack!

Go to Instagram and Facebook tomorrow for your first prompt, and join us for the festivities!

Picture This: Hello, Life! Pocket Scrapbooking

It’s a simple fact of life—we’re BUSY! Regardless of what stage of life you may be in, there will always be bathrooms to clean, dinners to cook, outings to plan, people to visit, and just plain ol’ work to do. That’s why many busy bees love our Picture My Life™ scrapbooking programs for quick, trendy scrapbooking. And what’s the perfect stamp set to pair with all your pocket scrapbooking pages? The My Acrylix® Hello, Life!—Pocket Scrapbooking stamp set, of course!

Hello, Life! Pocket Scrapbooking CTMH

This stamp set, which is one of three stamp sets we’ve created to celebrate National Stamping Month, is perfect for Picture My Life because it pairs perfectly with every design and every season of life. The sentiments can be mixed and matched to create a whole slew of sayings, and you can easily customize your pocket cards or even create your own with the brushstroke, heart, or plus sign stamps. Take a look at what we mean on this precious page:

Hello, Life Pocket Scrapbooking Layout CTMH

Look at how these stamps really bring this page to life! A quick look at the recipe for this page will reveal that there is not one Picture My Life card used on this layout—only some White Daisy cardstock, a smidgeon of Paper Fundamentals, a few Picture My Life clear overlays, and the extraordinary stamp images from this set! Isn’t it amazing how a little stamping can add such texture and personality to a piece of simple White Daisy cardstock?

To create the “TODAY” card, our artist used White Daisy cardstock and the “TODAY” sentiment from this stamp set to create a unique look that coordinates with the girls’ clothing. And take a look at the plus sign card! A snippet of the Paper Fundamentals Whimsy pack and the “SO IN LOVE WITH TODAY” sentiment from this stamp set make the card almost as cute as the picture sitting next to it. Even the “LOVE THIS LIFE” card was made using a combination of stamp images and a clear Picture My Life overlay.

This page gives you a good idea of the possibilities you can achieve with this set, but just think of the ways it could contribute to ALL your crafting projects! Then think about combining this stamp set with the other Hello, Life! stamp sets! We’ve intentionally designed them to be compatible, so really, there’s nothing you can’t do with these little beauties. 🙂

This stamp set, as well as the other two Hello, Life! stamp sets, are only available until the end of the month, so grab them while you can! Also remember to share your Hello, Life! artwork by using the hashtag #ctmhhellolife and #ctmhnsm for National Stamping Month. You can also find more artwork inspiration by searching for these hashtags on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.
