New Spins on Old Techniques

Like the world of fashion, trends in papercrafting are always changing. One day it’s all about brads and buttons and the next it’s all about sparkles and shimmer!

Just because an artistic technique or aesthetic may no longer be “on trend” doesn’t mean that you can’t still use it. You just need to freshen it up!

To show you what we mean, we dug through our archives to find artwork created with some old-school techniques. We then asked our artists to create new artwork using these same techniques…with a modern-day spin!

They’ve come up with some amazing alterations to these techniques that will make your artwork amazing!

Old Technique:

Distressing the edges of your titles with ink. Remember when we did this for everything? Distress all the things! 🙂

New spins on old papercrafting techniques #ctmh #closetomyheart #learn #technique #scrapbooking #papercrafting

New Spin:

Instead of distressing your titles, try stamping them using the rock n’ roll technique. It keeps your edges clean, which is the new trend, but just like distressing, it gives your titles dimension and color variation.

New spins on old papercrafting techniques #ctmh #closetomyheart #learn #technique #scrapbooking #papercrafting

Old Technique:

Ripping and inking your edges, aka, making your artwork look like it’s 100 years old. And remember how burned edges were such a thing? Ripping and inking your edges with black ink mimicked that trend, which you can see on the card below.

New spins on old papercrafting techniques #ctmh #closetomyheart #learn #technique #scrapbooking #papercrafting

New Spin:

Instead of inking your ripped edges, try leaving your ripped edges un-inked and inking your clean edges instead, using a color other than black or brown! The key is subtlety! You can see we added some faint pink inking to the edges of the pink paper here. It helps to add some depth to the paper without screaming “I’m distressed!”

New spins on old papercrafting techniques #ctmh #closetomyheart #learn #technique #scrapbooking #papercrafting

Old Technique:

Stippled titles. Remember this one? You’d spell out your title with stickers, make a million little dots over the stickers with a marker, and then peel off your stickers to reveal your finished title.

New spins on old papercrafting techniques #ctmh #closetomyheart #learn #technique #scrapbooking #papercrafting

New Spin:

Watercolored titles. Instead of stippling over your stickers with a marker, paint over them with a wide paintbrush and some watercolor paint. We used this technique with a “hello” sticker from our Springtime Complements to create the title below.

New spins on old papercrafting techniques #ctmh #closetomyheart #learn #technique #scrapbooking #papercrafting

Pretty neat, right?

Just because papercrafting trends change doesn’t mean you need to throw out your bag of tricks. All you need to do is find a way to make your old tricks feel new again!

Which spin is your favorite? Tell us in the comments below!

3 Ideas for Scrapbook Cover Pages

Every scrapbook album needs a front cover page and a back cover page…but sometimes it’s hard to know how to summarize your album! After all, you only have two pages, one at the front and one at the back, to explain what the entire album holds!

If cover pages have you stumped, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! 😉 Here are three fail-proof ideas for creating amazing cover pages!

In Great Shape

3 Ideas for Scrapbook Cover Pages #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #cover #page #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ideas #inspiration

Attach a large shape to the center of your base page. Then position your title and photos over this shape. Even if you have multiple photos (we have five here!), your page will still feel like a cover page because the large shape in the background creates a central focus. Pretty neat trick, right? 🙂

Easy As 1-2-3!

3 Ideas for Scrapbook Cover Pages #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #cover #page #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ideas #inspiration

Simply attach three photos horizontally across the center of your page. Then add your title directly above or below these photos. Three is the key here! It’s a balanced number that draws the eye in.

Keep It Simple, Silly!

3 Ideas for Scrapbook Cover Pages #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #cover #page #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ideas #inspiration

When all else fails, find a photo that sums up your album, and center it on your page along with a prominent title.

3 Ideas for Scrapbook Cover Pages #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbooking #cover #page #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ideas #inspiration

One fun spin on this approach is to center your photo but then place the title on the left side of your page, either vertically or horizontally!

Overall, the secret to creating a strong cover page is to draw the eye in to a central point with your pictures and title. If you keep that in mind, then you’re off to a great start!

And while you’re working on your cover pages, be sure to grab some albums because they’re on a great sale! For the month of June, you can buy one album and then get a second one at half price!

What album are you currently working on? Tell us in the comments below! 🙂

What better way to wrap up National Scrapbooking Month than to give our readers a free scrapbook pattern? 🙂

Free scrapbook pattern for National Scrapbooking Month, courtesy of Close To My Heart! #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbook #pattern #scrapbooking #ideas #inspiration #free

This pattern originally debuted with our Moon Doggie papers, but we decided to pair it with our National Scrapbooking Month Live Beautifully paper packet and stamp set—and we love the finished look! It goes to show how scrapbook patterns are truly timeless.

Download Pattern

Download the pattern above, and then create your own layout. Though the photo sizes on this pattern are not standard, you could easily replace the 5 ½” x 8″ photo on the left page with a matted 5″ x 7″. For the 4″ x 2 ½” photos on the right page, it is easy to trim ½” off of a 4″ x 3″ to fit the space.

Remember, our Live Beautifully paper packet and stamp set are only available until the end of the month, so grab them while you can!

Heritage Scrapbooking with Live Beautifully

Heritage scrapbooking inspiration #ctmh #closetomyheart #livebeautifully #heritagescrapbooking #genealogy #familyhistory #scrapbooking

At the heart of scrapbooking is the idea of preserving memories and telling stories in a meaningful way that will last. Scrapbooks are a great way to preserve your family’s history and be artistic at the same time.

Our Live Beautifully paper packet, which is only available this month as part of National Scrapbooking Month, features vintage-inspired designs that are perfect for heritage scrapbooking.

Heritage scrapbooking inspiration #ctmh #closetomyheart #livebeautifully #heritagescrapbooking #genealogy #familyhistory #scrapbooking

The beautiful flowers on this page were trimmed right out of one of the Live Beautifully papers. To really make them pop, we curled up the edges and attached them using 3-D foam tape. They look like they’re blooming right off the page!

This page also shows how the All About the Gold Fundamentals make a great companion to your Live Beautifully papers. They are 12″ x 12″ clear overlays with gold foil designs; on this page we used the diagonal stripes design. These overlays work really well with the gold foil accents featured in the Live Beautifully paper packet.

Heritage scrapbooking inspiration #ctmh #closetomyheart #livebeautifully #heritagescrapbooking #genealogy #familyhistory #scrapbooking

And while we’re talking about gold, let’s not overlook gold glitter paper! We used it to mat our photos here, and we love the results! Gold glitter paper looks really elegant with sepia or black and white photos. We finished the page off with some gold foil accents from the Springtime Complements, including the title.

Which additional products do you like to use with the Live Beautifully paper packet for your heritage scrapbooking? Tell us in the comments below!

How Much Do You Know About Your Great Grandparents?

How Much Do You Know About Your Great Grandparents? #ctmh #closetomyheart #memorykeeping #scrapbooking #genealogy #familyhistory

This month is National Scrapbooking Month, and we want to take a moment to explain why memory keeping matters so deeply to us. In addition to the cathartic, empowering experience of creating something with your own two hands, scrapbooking allows you to fully preserve your memories: You can combine photos, stories, and mementos all in one place while creating artwork that is a reflection of you. These are the little things that represent your unique life, a life no one else lives or will ever live.

Did you know that it only takes three generations for your story to be lost? Think about it: Your children will remember some stories about you, and your grandchildren may remember a handful, but unless you have your memories preserved, you’ll be nothing more than a name, and maybe a face, to your great grandchildren and their posterity.

How Much Do You Know About Your Great Grandparents? #ctmh #closetomyheart #memorykeeping #scrapbooking #genealogy #familyhistory

We now live in a generation consumed with sharing the present moment through channels like Facebook and Instagram, and even more short-lived forms like Insta stories and Snapchat. They’re an easy and fast way to share photos, which sounds great, right? However, if you were to look back at your social media accounts 40 years from now (assuming they still exist!) do they truly capture your story? Will your great grandchildren have access to these accounts, and if so, will what they see fully capture the legacy of your life?

The art of writing down our stories, printing our photos, saving our mementos, and storing everything in albums seems to be a dying art, but this is still the best way to preserve our memories. It gives you something tangible that can literally be handed down from generation to generation, something that can be experienced in person.

How Much Do You Know About Your Great Grandparents? #ctmh #closetomyheart #memorykeeping #scrapbooking #genealogy #familyhistory

Also, your story isn’t the only one that can be lost. If no one else preserves your family’s stories, they will be lost as well. These are the stories of the people who mean the world to you, who fill your life with meaning and purpose.

We’re talking about the big stories here, the stories you yourself could never forget but others may not remember. When it comes to the small, beautiful, everyday moments, like the first word your child pronounces wrong or a kind act of service your spouse performs—these moments can be forgotten within months, weeks, even days unless you write them down, which is why we need to be diligent in our memory keeping. Time makes everything fade so fast.

Here is our plea to you, our readers. Please don’t let your stories be forgotten. When it comes down to it, it really doesn’t matter how exactly you preserve your memories, so long as you do it in a way that is meaningful to your posterity, easy for them to access, and will live far beyond your years.

How Much Do You Know About Your Great Grandparents? #ctmh #closetomyheart #memorykeeping #scrapbooking #genealogy #familyhistory

It’s okay if you’re not a great scrapbooker. It’s okay if the pages you create aren’t perfect. It’s okay to stick to pocket scrapbooking or pre-cut kits because that’s all you have time for. We’ve got news for you, folks: There’s no “right” way to scrapbook! What really matters is that we all remember how important it is to preserve our stories and photos, and that we each do something about it before it’s too late.

If you are willing to pledge that your memories and the memories of your family won’t be forgotten, please sign your name in the comments below and share this post on Facebook. Make a goal to spend even 10 minutes a day preserving your memories, or maybe 30 minutes a week! Do whatever you can, just don’t let your story and the stories of your family be forgotten. Together, we can help others rediscover memory keeping and the true importance of it to future generations.

Let’s do this! 🙂

11 Reasons Your Children Will Want to Have Baby Books

11 Reasons Your Children Will Want to Have Baby Books #babyscrapbook #babybook #baby #memories #crafting #scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart

In a day and age that makes taking and printing photos so easy, you would think that more and more parents would preserve these photos in books and scrapbooks. However, it seems that most photos nowadays don’t leave our computers or social media accounts—and at times, even our cameras!

The art of printing our family photos, writing down our stories, and placing them all together in the safe arms of an album seems to be a dying art—and it’s something that our kids are going to miss someday. When they want to see what they were like as babies and toddlers, the years they will remember very least, they will have nowhere to turn.

Here are 11 reasons why your children will want to have baby books:

1. They will know where to find photos of their childhood.

You may know where your favorite pictures of your babies are on your computer or on Facebook, but in 10 years will your kids know where to look? Not so much, unless they can grab their baby album off of the bookshelf.

2. A baby book is tangible evidence of your love.

When your kids go through the emotional highs and lows of the teenage years, the baby books you made for them will remind them—and you—that, despite what it might seem like at times, you love them with all your heart. 🙂

3. Your toddlers will love to look through their baby books.

Though you may think your kids won’t value their baby books until they are older, chances are they will actually love them as toddlers. Toddlers love to see pictures of themselves as babies; it’s part of a phase where they begin to discover their own identity. Also, baby books make some of the best bedtime stories!

4. They will love to look at their baby pictures when they have their own kids someday.

When your kids start to have kids of their own, it will be so much fun for them to look through their baby books and see how their traits and mannerisms were passed down to their own kids.

5. They will want to look through their siblings’ baby books.

Nothing bonds siblings together quite like looking through each other’s baby books. They will laugh at silly pictures of each other. And even though they may not have memories of their siblings because of age differences, they will get to see those memories through your eyes.

6. They will love to show relatives who come to visit their baby books.

Your in-laws or grandparents might live far away, but you can help them feel more connected to your children by showing them the baby books you’ve been working on when they are in town visiting—and once your kids are old enough, they will love to be the ones to pull out their baby books and talk your visitors through each page. 🙂

7. Life goes by lightning fast, and baby books make it easy to stroll down memory lane anytime they want.

Childhood flies by, so your kids will want to revisit their old memories. And if you’re a young mom, just trust us. You will want to revisit those baby pictures over and over again. Especially once puberty hits. 😉

8. You will forget the stories, even if you preserve the photos.

Though you may save all your photos in one way or another, the stories that go along with those photos will be lost unless you document them in a book. And moments from those sweet baby years are moments both you and your children will want to remember forever, even the small ones.

9. They will love to see your perspective.

You may think baby books are all about your babies, but they’re also a time capsule of you as a mom. As your babies grow into parents themselves, they will love to look back on your perspective as a new mother. Even seeing your handwriting will bring back good memories.

10. They will cherish their baby books more and more with time.

A baby book is something that increases in value with age. Just imagine how much that book will mean to your kids when they have grandkids and great grandkids! It’ll be a family treasure!

11. They will turn to their baby books in difficult times.

When life gets your kids down, they will turn to their baby books for comfort, to reminisce about the good old days, and to gain some perspective (though you may not see them doing this as teenagers because that would be so embarrassing! 🙂 )
