Get Creative with Mini Albums!

It’s easy to think that memory keeping needs to be done in a straight, chronological line, scrapbooking your photos as they happen … hopefully, but you can share your photos in many other fun and creative ways. That’s what makes the Story by Stacy™ product line so special. As it’s name suggests, these products invite us to explore the stories behind the photos we take to uncover the details that make them personal and interesting. Story by Stacy™ products encourage us to consider taking a different approach, one that focuses on your unique memories of the subject or topic of your album.

Getting Creative with Mini Albums #ctmh #closetomyheart #CTMHStorybyStacy #minialbum #scrapbooking #storyideas #memorykeeping #storytelling

A few weeks ago we shared a handful of ways you can use Story by Stacy™ workshop kits for the holidays. If you missed that blog post, check it out here. Because this month’s special features these amazing kits at a discount, we have a few more ideas for how you can document one-of-a-kind stories in the mini album format with Story Starter. Keep in mind, we’re showing you how to do this with Story Starter, but you could plug these ideas into any scrapbooking format. So many possibilities!

Idea #1: Where I StandGetting Creative with Mini Albums #ctmh #closetomyheart #CTMHStorybyStacy #minialbum #scrapbooking #storyideas #memorykeeping #storytelling

In this mini album, the storyteller has documented some of the places she’s been, but with a fun twist. All of these photos show shoes and the place where she’s standing. The ground you’ve walked on is also part of our journey. These kinds of photos could be taken anywhere, and in this Story Starter album, sharing the memories and stories about her shoes and where she is gives it an unusual AND intriguing perspective. This is an easy one to take photos for since it could be anywhere—standing at work, in front of your house, on a vacation—literally any place that you go. These types of stories showcase your experiences in a new way, and it reminds you of the places you’ve lived, worked, or traveled.

Idea #2: Happy PlacesGetting Creative with Mini Albums #ctmh #closetomyheart #CTMHStorybyStacy #minialbum #scrapbooking #storyideas #memorykeeping #storytelling

This Story Starter album is full of photos and memories of places that make this storyteller happy. For her, it’s the beach. Each photo is paired with a memory about what makes these places special, and pops of color are added with the bright colors of the Hello Pumpkin Complements and accents of Sapphire and Mint cardstock to match the photos. This is another fun topic because happy places are unique to you! Think about where you feel like your best self—happy, whole, and content. That’s the perfect subject for a happy place themed album.Getting Creative with Mini Albums #ctmh #closetomyheart #CTMHStorybyStacy #minialbum #scrapbooking #storyideas #memorykeeping #storytellingYou could create an entire series of Story Starters just to document the places that make you happy. Or, consider ways you can include other people in this kind of storytelling. You could do a Story Starter album with your family members, highlighting the places that each person loves with a photo and their own stories about that place.

Idea #3: HometownGetting Creative with Mini Albums #ctmh #closetomyheart #CTMHStorybyStacy #minialbum #scrapbooking #storyideas #memorykeeping #storytelling

Another place you will definitely have stories about is your hometown. A mini album like Story Starter is a great canvas for capturing the things that you love about where you’re from, and the writing process will help you document detailed memories about that particular place. Did you notice what’s on our album cover, “(208)”? It’s an area code! Even the area code is something that’s unique to just that one place. Maybe your hometown is famous for something or has a nickname? As you write your memories and gather photos, think about the community, the landmarks, and even the people. How are those things a part of who you are?Getting Creative with Mini Albums #ctmh #closetomyheart #CTMHStorybyStacy #minialbum #scrapbooking #storyideas #memorykeeping #storytelling
The Story Starter format is also a fun place to try including different kinds of small photos. With the 4″ x 4″ size, you could use small instant photo prints, like we’ve done here, to illustrate your memories.

Feeling inspired to create yet? Just in case you need a few more ideas, take a look at the list below and the examples from Stacy Julian, on her blog.

  • My Playlist
    • Music often plays a part in our favorite moments. Think about your favorite songs and write down why you love them. Then use a photo to illustrate the moment. If you don’t have a photo to pair with the musical memory, try including pictures in other ways. You could take a photo of the album cover or the artist. How you listen to music is also part of the experience. Is it on your phone? A record? A casette tape or CD? You could include those kinds of pictures and stories as well.
  • Memories about Movies/TV Shows
    • Are there shows you like to watch on a weekend? Any movies you never get tired of seeing? Just like how the music we listen to tells us something about the time and place we live in, so do the movies and shows we watch. You can probably easily list some of your top faves, but have you ever thought about WHY you like them? Use the Story Starter writing process to think about the memories you associate with the movies you love.
  • A Day (or Week) in the Life
    • Approach this kind of topic in a new way with Story Starter. Start by first going through the writing portion. Take some time to think about what a day or a week looks like for you. What are the highlights? What are your habits or routines? Do any particular sounds, tastes, or feelings come to mind? Then group those memories together and find (or take) photos to represent them.

Check out these blog posts from Stacy Julian, the Stacy behind Story by Stacy™ products. She used Story Starter albums to tell some fun stories about herself and other memories. Click the links below to learn more about each of these topics.

Treat Yourself to a Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience!

There are as many different approaches to memory keeping as there are memory keepers. We celebrate every approach and believe that whatever approach gets your stories told and your memories preserved is the best! For some that means pictures and pocket cards tucked into an Everyday Life™ album; for others it means putting together a pre-cut Cut Above® layout; for others, memory keeping also doubles as an artistic outlet incorporating different crafting techniques on a 12″ x 12″ paper canvas. Deluxe scrapbooking workshops provide this kind of creative experience for anyone who wants to add a little more “oomph” to the pages of their scrapbook.

Our Holiday Expressions idea book introduced the first two deluxe scrapbooking workshops, which featured the Boutique and ‘Tis the Season collection. Earlier this month we released a third workshop featuring the Hello Pumpkin papers used in decidedly non-Halloween artwork. Here, see for yourself:

A Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHHelloPumpkin #HelloPumpkin #scrapbooking #scrapbookingworkshop #papercraftingtechnique #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ThinCuts #diecuts

As you can see, this workshop guides you in the creation of two 2-page scrapbook layouts and two single-page scrapbook layouts, all in the 12″ x 12″ size. Each layout is made using a few papercrafting techniques, such as folding, angled cuts, and creative use of Thin Cuts dies to achieve unique effects. Take this scrapbook page, for example:

A Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHHelloPumpkin #HelloPumpkin #scrapbooking #scrapbookingworkshop #papercraftingtechnique #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ThinCuts #diecuts

There’s a lot happening on this page, but we’d like to draw your attention primarily to the circle and heart right in the center of the page. Here’s a quick look at the technique that went into creating this accent.

A Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHHelloPumpkin #HelloPumpkin #scrapbooking #scrapbookingworkshop #papercraftingtechnique #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ThinCuts #diecut #cuttlebug

Starting with a 2¾” square of Peach cardstock, we used the 2¼” stitched circle die to cut only half of a circle. The trick to only cutting half of a shape is all about how you feed the die through your machine. As you can see in the photo above, only part of the circle is sandwiched between the plates, resulting in a partial cut like this:

Thanks to our beautiful two-toned cardstock, when you fold back the cut part, you get a lightly contrasting color. We then layered this piece over a piece of Ballerina cardstock to add another shade and topped it off with the adorable heart sticker. Neat, right? And that technique is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to our deluxe scrapbooking. Take a closer look at the other layouts you’ll make as part of this workshop:

A Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHHelloPumpkin #HelloPumpkin #scrapbooking #scrapbookingworkshop #papercraftingtechnique #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ThinCuts #diecutshello-layoutmoments-layout

The helpful instructions that accompany the workshop show you how to replicate each technique, guiding you step-by-step through the creative process. If you’d like to try something new for your memory keeping, we invite you to check out the Hello Pumpkin Deluxe Scrapbooking Workshop, and see what deluxe scrapbooking is all about!

FREE More Magical Scrapbook Pattern!

Free Scrapbook Pattern #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHMoreMagical #MoreMagical #freepattern #freescrapbookpattern #scrapbooking #free #download #scrapbooklayout #magical #adventure #dreamscometrue

Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary day, we give you a fairy tale that looks like a free scrapbook pattern!

Free Scrapbook Pattern #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHMoreMagical #MoreMagical #freepattern #freescrapbookpattern #scrapbooking #free #download #scrapbooklayout #magical #adventure #dreamscometrue

This timeless pattern made its original debut years ago with our You Rock collection. Without the need of any pixie dust, the instructions have been revamped so they can be used with any papers and for any occasion!

We created a truly enchanting spread by pairing this pattern with the More Magical paper packet, coordinating cardstock, and stamp set. Our current More Magical workshop kit makes 4 coordinating two-page layouts to preserve all of your magical adventures. Download the pattern and cutting diagrams below and use them to make a fifth coordinating layout to add to your album!

Download Pattern

As usual, we encourage you to make this, and any, pattern your own by being flexible with its parts. Take a close look at our completed layout for some examples. Instead of using a small photo at the top of 2D, we filled the space with a stamp. Then, we added another 4 x 4 photo to the layout by splitting it down the middle and attaching half of it on each page to complete the row of photos across the top.

And don’t forget about those pocket cards that are part of the paper packet! Use them whole, cut up, or even torn to incorporate additional patterns, sentiments, and accents. Adding a pocket card with a lighter design to a page made up of darker patterns is also an easy way to create space for stamping.

No matter where your happiest place on earth is, take advantage of the bright patterns and motifs available in the More Magical collection and use them to preserve all of your fairy tale adventures. Remember, this collection is only available through the end of the month while supplies last, so make sure to grab yours while you still can!

What Is Your Scrapbooking Style?

Scrapbooking Styles #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbookingstyles #pocketscrapbooking #embellishment #millennialstyle #millennial #grid #traditionalscrapbooking #ctmhdocumented #ctmhcentralpark #memories #memorykeeping #scrapbooking #scrapbookLet’s face it—we don’t all approach scrapbooking in the same way. From the way we take our pictures, to the way we talk about them, we each have our own personal flair and style of doing things. While some of us may prefer pocket scrapbooking to a traditional 12″ x 12″ layout, others may favor heavy embellishments and lots of extra trimmings—or both, or none of the above. The point is, it doesn’t really matter what your style is so long as it’s functional for you and you are getting your scrapping on.

We’ve got three examples for you today of the same story, using the exact same pictures and journaling on each, and even using the same paper collection and embellishments to show you that no matter what your preferences are, there is a method of scrapbooking out there that is right for you, and we have the tools to help you realize your vision! There really are so many other ways to preserve your memories, too, so if none of these apply to you, reach out to your Close To My Heart Consultant for even more ideas. (If you don’t have a Consultant, find one in your area by clicking on Find a Consultant under the What We Do tab on our website, here.)

Let’s start things off by taking a closer look at what a “traditional” scrapbooking page may look like.

Scrapbooking Styles #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbookingstyles #pocketscrapbooking #embellishment #millennialstyle #millennial #grid #traditionalscrapbooking #ctmhdocumented #ctmhcentralpark #memories #memorykeeping #scrapbooking #scrapbook

One secret to this style of scrapbooking is starting with a pattern! Our patterns are easy to follow, thanks to paper cutting diagrams and exact measurements for paper and photo placement. Once you’ve got your page designed, whether you created it from scratch or used a pattern, it’s up to you to add your personal touches in the details.

One of the hallmarks of this style of scrapbooking is the detail work! There are a lot of embellishments and small details on this page subtly hidden in plain sight.

Bitty Sparkles were added to the center of flower stickers, other stickers were laid behind and on top of photos, papers are layered, the photos are slightly overlapping, a beautiful wood word accents the title while adding weight and texture to the page, and splatters of paint add character throughout—just to name a few 🙂 .

If you still like the idea of a 12″ x 12″ page but aren’t as interested in all the extra flourishes, take a look at this second variation.

Scrapbooking Styles #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbookingstyles #pocketscrapbooking #embellishment #millennialstyle #millennial #grid #traditionalscrapbooking #ctmhdocumented #ctmhcentralpark #memories #memorykeeping #scrapbooking #scrapbook

This page follows a cleaner and simpler approach compared to the first, and still offers the same information. The photos are the same as is the journaling.

We still added some embellishments, including a different wood title, which stands alone in this example, but everything conforms with the cleaner “millennial” style that we’ve talked about in a previous post (Millennial-style Scrapbooking).

Our photos are once again square, but this time they are evenly spaced and arranged in a grid along with the journaling, which is also formatted in a square (very user friendly for all of those social media photos!). Other than the paper used to mat the white cardstock and journaling, there is very little use of additional patterns. The result is yet another beautiful page in a very different style.

Finally, we can’t talk about scrapbooking methods without talking about pockets. Our third example shows what this layout would look like in a pocket scrapbooker’s album. Rather than a single 12″ x 12″ empty canvas, with pocket scrapbooking you have as many blank canvases as you have pockets! You can get as creative and embellishment-heavy as you’d like, or keep things simple and fill most of your pockets with photos and readymade pocket cards with little to no embellishment.Scrapbooking Styles #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbookingstyles #pocketscrapbooking #embellishment #millennialstyle #millennial #grid #traditionalscrapbooking #ctmhdocumented #ctmhcentralpark #memories #memorykeeping #scrapbooking #scrapbookOur example is a bit more embellished than the average pocket scrapbooking page. Instead of using Picture My Life™ pocket cards, each pocket card is made from regular size patterned paper trimmed down to fit the pockets. Making your own pocket cards, or embellishing existing ones, is one place where you can add your personal touches to your scrapbooking.

Scrapbooking Styles #ctmh #closetomyheart #scrapbookingstyles #pocketscrapbooking #embellishment #millennialstyle #millennial #grid #traditionalscrapbooking #ctmhdocumented #ctmhcentralpark #memories #memorykeeping #scrapbooking #scrapbook #journaling #journalling

Another place to showcase your personality is in your journaling. Instead of typing them up, create a more intimate setting for your memories by spelling them out in your own handwriting.

If you’re short on time and still want to scrapbook (which everyone should 😉 ) pocket scrapbooking also gives you the flexibility to add your photos first and fill in the empty pockets later. There’s less pressure to complete one page at a time as there is with the more “traditional” approaches.

Whatever your scrapbooking style is, we’re here to support it! Experiment with any or all of our examples above or come up with your own. In the comments below, we’d love to hear what has (and hasn’t) worked for you as you work on preserving your memories!

Millennial-style Scrapbooking

There are many, many ways you can preserve your story in a scrapbook and how we do that has changed over time. What hasn’t changed is how much we like remembering our story. People enjoy looking back, sometimes with nostalgia, other times just as a reminder of where they’ve been. People also like sharing their memories, talking about their experiences and the things that have shaped them.

We get lots of questions about how to encourage a younger generation to take up this mantle and preserve their story by creating something that will last like a scrapbook, and today we are showing you some examples of scrapbooking from a Millennial point of view. Anyone can scrapbook this way. The principles featured in this style of scrapbooking can appeal to all memory keepers, but we are specifically focusing on style aspects that Millennials gravitate toward.

1. Create intentional white space.

Millenial-style Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #millenial #scrapbooking #millenialmemorykeeping #memorykeeping #storytelling #preservingmemories #simplicity #whitespace #minimalism #minimalist #minimalistic #happyplace

Are you familiar with the term minimalism? It’s actually an idea that’s been around for quite a while, but today, minimalism is a trend that resonates with many Millennials. It focuses on eliminating clutter and avoiding excess and distractions. People apply this idea to spending, décor, design, fashion, and more. When thinking about minimalism and memory keeping, focus on clearing the clutter by intentionally leaving lots of white space, like you see in the page above. This page is primarily White Daisy cardstock, but you don’t get lost in the white space. Adding a thin Linen cardstock border on the top and bottom of the page helps to ground your eye and pulls you in to the center.

2. Use only one or two photos.

Millenial-style Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #millenial #scrapbooking #millenialmemorykeeping #memorykeeping #storytelling #preservingmemories #simplicity #whitespace #minimalism #minimalist #minimalistic #happyplace

With minimalism in mind, a single photo is the focus of this page. It’s easy to get lost in the thousands of photos on our phones or computers, but you don’t have to scrapbook all of them. That’s probably not even possible, but you can pick your favorites. Start with scrapbooking one or two photos that are truly meaningful to you and tell other people something about who you are and what you enjoy. Even just one photo on a page can tell a story in a creative, yet clean and uncomplicated way. The neutral color scheme keeps the spotlight on the photo. Just add a few embellishments and a couple stamped images to round out this look.

3. Focus on the story.

Millenial-style Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #millenial #scrapbooking #millenialmemorykeeping #memorykeeping #storytelling #preservingmemories #simplicity #whitespace #minimalism #minimalist #minimalistic #andthen #journaling

We don’t always remember details about our lives, even from the most important moments. Details from events like family vacations, weddings, or even day-to-day life can get lost. Scrapbooking gives us a place to record them, so we can remember the little things that made them special later. Instead of thinking about your page as one that’s primarily photos, why not think about your page as one that’s primarily words?

Millenial-style Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #millenial #scrapbooking #millenialmemorykeeping #memorykeeping #storytelling #preservingmemories #simplicity #whitespace #minimalism #minimalist #minimalistic #andthen #journaling

Describing the story can be the point of your page. Scrapbooking allows you to be reflective, to be grateful, and to document change. Those are ideas that matter to Millennials, and they often are thinking about ways to reflect and document their lives on social media or through other venues like a gratitude journal. These are all ways to tell your story. What makes scrapbooking unique is that it is preserved and available to continue to share and learn from over time. You can do this, plus exercise your creativity, through memory keeping.

Millenial-style Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #millenial #scrapbooking #millenialmemorykeeping #memorykeeping #storytelling #preservingmemories #simplicity #whitespace #minimalism #minimalist #minimalistic #andthen #journaling #journalling #journal

This page also incorporates elements from the minimalist perspective, using lots of white space and just one photo to complement the real treasure, the words. Keep in mind, your photos don’t have to have faces in them. It could be the perspective of your feet hanging out the window, like you see on this page, or maybe it’s the food you ate or the places you visited. Photos don’t have to be just of people. It can be whatever best illustrates the words on your page.

Millenial-style Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #millenial #scrapbooking #millenialmemorykeeping #memorykeeping #storytelling #preservingmemories #simplicity #whitespace #minimalism #minimalist #minimalistic #carwindow #feet #andthen

4. Make something simple, yet Instagram-worthy.

Millenial-style Scrapbooking #ctmh #closetomyheart #millenial #scrapbooking #millenialmemorykeeping #memorykeeping #storytelling #preservingmemories #simplicity #whitespace #minimalism #minimalist #minimalistic #pocketscrapbooking #picturemylife #ctmhpicturemylife #love #outdoors

Millennials, and many of the rest of us, are already sharing their story on social media. These photos deserve a home, but it’s equally important to Millennials to be creating in ways that are Instagram-worthy. This means that what they make should be easy to share and aesthetically pleasing with a touch of simplicity.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Leonardo da Vinci

The beauty found in simplicity is something even Leonardo da Vinci recognized as important, and it continues to resonate with Millennials. Using an Everyday Life™ format can mimic the popular look of photo books, and these albums can be just as simple to create. Even in a smaller size, this type of scrapbooking can still emphasize white space with photos, similar to a photo book. Photos could be square, making it easy to scrapbook things directly from places like Instagram. Millennials are already sharing their story on social media, but it is so easy, and affordable, to take those stories and photos and slip them into an Everyday Life™ album. With little extra effort, you can preserve your memories in a simple, sophisticated way.

Scrapbooks come in all shapes and sizes. They allow us to creatively express who we are, the time we live in, and the things that matter to us. You don’t have to be a Millennial to appreciate the trendy looks in the artwork you see in this post. Like da Vinci’s thoughts about simplicity, some of these ideas have been around a very, very long time. Millennials just happen to be the ones taking inspiration from them today, and that can encourage us all to both try something new in our memory keeping and help others to tell their story in whatever way speaks to them. So next time you pull our your scrapbooking supplies, think about how you can add some extra white space, focus on the story, or keep simplicity in mind as you create beautiful pages for your memories, and as always, we hope you share those memories with others.

25 Scrapbooking Hacks

We talked to the pros in our art studio and came up with a list of easy, yet very effective, tips and tricks to take your scrapbooking artwork from good to great! (A few of these tips were shared in previous blog posts, but a lot of them are new. We’ve put them all together for you to have as a resource in one great list!)

Ready to step up your scrapbooking game? Take a look!

1. Try attaching embellishments with mini staples. Mini staples can give your page a different feel without any extra work.

2. Use a ruler and pencil to draw in journaling lines. Write your journaling and then either erase the lines or go over them with a black journaling pen.

3. To change up the look of your title, cut letters from patterned paper or even the background of extra photos using Block Alphabet Thin Cuts.

4. Place embellishments in odd numbers on your layouts. Odd numbers are visually more appealing.

5. Cut shimmer trim into smaller strips by lightly attaching it to your paper trimmer. This will keep it in place while you trim, giving you a nice straight cut. Plus, it pulls off easily when you’re done!

6. Stamp outline shapes on patterned paper. Then, you don’t have to color the shapes in yourself.

7. Don’t be afraid to mix and match the patterned paper from several paper collections to have more options for your layouts. We spy three different paper collections on this page. Can you find them all, too?

8. Missing a photo for your layout? You can put wax paper under a Complement sticker that might go over a photo. This lets you finish assembling your layout and add the missing photo later.

9. Stamp words with alphabet stamp sets to create personalized backgrounds.

10. Before you throw your paper scraps away, see if you have pieces that you can use to cut small shapes like circles, squares, or rectangles. Even these little pieces can be used for layering, backgrounds, or as journaling strips. You can even tear the edges to use as washi tape.

11. When adding paint splatters after your page is put together, make sure to mask the layout and photos with scratch paper.

12. Didn’t get your title perfectly straight? Use a small tool like a Cricut® spatula to gently move something already attached to your page.

13. Bend up the edges of layers to add dimension. This could be a simple banner or photo mat, just to give an extra touch of depth.

14. When sewing on your layouts, avoid putting adhesive where you plan to sew. The adhesive will get stuck on the needle. Use adhesive to attach paper in the center and then sew the edges like we did below.

15. Experiment with a ⅛” photo mat on your layouts. This gives you slight definition around your photo without distracting from other elements on your page.

16. Trim Complements from the 6″ x 6″ sheet and lay them on your artwork to preview their placement before attaching them. It’s much easier to find the perfect spot and see how they will look on your page.

17. When layering several patterned papers, staple them together first, then cover with a photo. This will keep your layers arranged how you’d like them while you are gluing down your page. Here is an example. A small staple holds the three layers in place behind the photo.

18. Before attaching your paper, embellishments, and photos, lay everything out on your page and snap a quick photo with your phone. This gives you something to reference as you attach each piece, making sure you get it exactly how you want it.

19. Use the smallest possible My Acrylix® block when stamping on a layout. A smaller block can help you avoid rocking your stamp back and forth and ending up with a wobbly image.

20. Mix patterned paper with small, medium, and large patterns. Here you can see how we used a tiny floral pattern combined with the medium-sized triangle pattern, and finally the large polka dots.

21. Move the paper not the scissors when hand trimming embellishments, stamped images, and other shapes.

22. If a color feels too bright for a layout, use vellum to tone it down. We added a small strip of vellum, sewn over the Charcoal cardstock, to create a softer edge.

23. Hold on to extra Thin Cuts or Cricut® shapes to use for other projects. You never know when an extra tag, banner, or circle could come in handy while you’re crafting!

24. Need a different color or patterned paper for your layout? Remember your pocket cards! Pocket cards from paper packets or from Picture My Life™ cards can be trimmed and used as accents or titles.

25. Use tweezers, a piercing tool, or even the tip of your micro-tip scissors to help you gently place small embellishments like bitty sparkles.
