Split Stamping Technique

In honor of National Stamping Month, we thought it’d be fun to share with you some stamping techniques on the blog—because no crafter can ever have too many stamping tricks up her sleeve, right? 😉

Today’s post is going to teach you what we call the Split Stamping technique.

This technique is exactly what it sounds like: You split your stamp image. There are a few different ways to do this.

One of the easiest ways is to stamp an image onto a piece of cardstock and then cut it into pieces, like the elephant below.

Split stamping technique #closetomyheart #ctmh #stamping #techniques #clear #stamps #card

Cutting up an image and reassembling it on your artwork is a unique way to draw more attention to your stamping.

Another way you can “split” your stamp is with masking. Not sure what we mean by “masking”? Masking is when you cover up part of your stamp or paper before stamping an image. Split stamping technique #closetomyheart #ctmh #stamping #techniques #clear #stamps #card

Here, we attached a strip of cardstock across the center of our card with just a little bit of adhesive so it wouldn’t slide around. Next, we stamped our flowers along the top and bottom of the card, overlapping them slightly with the strip. We then carefully peeled off the cardstock strip, removed any leftover adhesive with our Rub & Remove™ eraser, painted our flowers, and then stamped our sentiment.

For a more advanced spin on this technique, try incorporating the piece of cardstock you use for the masking!

Split stamping technique #closetomyheart #ctmh #stamping #techniques #clear #stamps #card

For this card, we cut both pieces of White Daisy cardstock, attached the smaller piece to the center of the larger piece with a little bit of adhesive, and then stamped our flowers over both pieces. Next, we carefully separated the smaller piece of cardstock from the larger one, painted our flowers, and popped the piece up on Bashful cardstock with 3-D foam tape. To add even more dimension, we also stamped some of the blossoms on scrap paper, painted them, trimmed them out, and then attached them over the matching blossoms with 3-D foam tape.

What do you think of the Split Stamping technique? Tell us in the comments below! And be sure to follow the blog all month long to see even more stamping techniques! 🙂

Paper for All Seasons

Our brand new Holiday Expressions idea book has now been live for almost two weeks, and we’re thrilled you finally get to see all the beautiful seasonal papers we’ve worked so hard on getting just right. 🙂 Part of making sure our papers are absolutely perfect includes balancing themed patterns with non-themed patterns so you have as much versatility as possible when you sit down to create.

Take this artwork, for example. It uses our Jeepers Creepers paper packet, which is Halloween themed, but you would never guess that it came from a Halloween paper packet, right?

Looking to save money on scrapbooking paper? Then choose Close To My Heart! Our patterns are so versatile that you can use them year round, meaning no paper will ever go to waste! #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhjeeperscreepers #halloweenscrapbooking

The fun lightening bolts are just the pattern for pairing with this spunky little girl. They’d also be adorable with pictures of a little boy.

Now how about this one? Does it remind you of Halloween?

Looking to save money on scrapbooking paper? Then choose Close To My Heart! Our patterns are so versatile that you can use them year round, meaning no paper will ever go to waste! #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhjeeperscreepers #halloweenscrapbooking

Who would have thought that this paper packet could be paired with spring photos? And yet it totally works! We paired some ribbon from our Whimsy ribbon pack with the purple Jeepers Creepers paper to give it a feminine touch.

Switching seasons, Jeepers Creepers also has colors that are perfect for your fall photos, like these family pictures:

Putting the “Shower” in Baby Shower

April showers bring May flowers—and though April may be winding down, some “showers” happen all year round. We’re talking about baby showers of course! What better way to celebrate the promise of new life than with a shower-themed baby shower? This post is just bursting with great artwork ideas for making your next shower a truly inspirational one.

Every good party starts with a stellar invitation. There’s nothing quite like getting fun snail mail, especially if it’s a handmade invitation!

Throw a shower-themed baby shower! #ctmh #closetomyheart #babyshowerideas #showertheme #rain #clouds #springtime #babies #pregnancy

The umbrella and cloud shapes you see are all courtesy of the amazing Cricut® Artistry collection—but the invitation is just the beginning! We used many of the same shapes to make perfectly coordinating decorations that we know you are just going to love:

There are so many fun elements of this party to talk about, but let’s start with the banner. Donning cute mini umbrellas and bright springtime colors, our “Oh Baby” banner helps set the stage for showering the mother-to-be. Above the table, we created a cloud of balloons with paper raindrops streaming down. Take a closer look:

These 3-D shapes are simple to create with your Cricut® machine and create such a unique backdrop. We used a similar technique in this video showing how to make a sweet baby mobile. They’ll be the talk of the party!

Of course we want the food to play into our theme, which is why we went with these white, fluffy cupcakes. And the cloud-embellished paper straws behind add some fun to our jars of lemonade.

A “cloud” of fresh baby’s breath fits right in, and we just had to embellish with these delicate little butterflies.

When the festivities are over, send your guests home with a raincheck—oh, we mean a party favor! A colorful paper pouch filled with goodies or gifts is just the thing. We chose a pattern from one of our newest paper packets, Calypso, which will be available starting May 1!

We know there must be lots of other great ways to tie in the rain shower theme to a baby shower—or to other parties, too! Let the comments pour in! 😉

Banner In a Jar

We’ve got a riddle for you: How is spring like papercrafting?

Give up?

Both make the world a brighter and more colorful place! And today’s project idea is a fun way to spread the joy of papercrafting. It’s an adorable “banner in a jar” kit:Create this easy "banner in a jar"—it's the perfect go-to gift! #ctmh #closetomyheart #banner #papercrafting #ctmhPenelope #homedecor #decorations #holiday #diygift

It all starts with a simple jar. Naturally we topped it off with a colorful piece of paper from the Penelope paper packet and a length of white & gold ribbon, but the real charm comes from what’s inside!Create this easy "banner in a jar"—it's the perfect go-to gift! #ctmh #closetomyheart #banner #papercrafting #ctmhPenelope #homedecor #decorations #holiday #diygift

Just take a look at that! Here’s what we’ve included:

  • Bright and cheery Penelope papers cut into pennant shapes using the CricutÂŽ Artbooking cartridge
  • Letters spelling “Happy Spring,” which were cut from Pixie cardstock using the CricutÂŽ Artistry cartridge
  • Penelope Complements
  • Playful Puffies
  • Bitty Sparkles
  • Thistle extra thick twine

Pre-cutting the pennant shapes and the letters means that the recipient of this gift just has to attach the letters to the pennant pieces, thread them onto the twine, and embellish! In just a few minutes they will end up with a fun banner like this one:Create this easy "banner in a jar"—it's the perfect go-to gift! #ctmh #closetomyheart #banner #papercrafting #ctmhPenelope #homedecor #decorations #holiday #diygift

Not pictured: the bright smile on the proud crafter’s face!

Who do you know that could use a little ray of sunshine in the form of an easy-to-assemble papercrafting project? Start stuffing those jars—just be sure to leave a little room for a note of encouragement, love, or appreciation to go along with it!

3 Creative Techniques to Spice Up Your Journaling

In the scrapbooking world, we spend a lot of time talking about the papers, the stamps, and the embellishments that go into making a layout great. Journaling is often an afterthought, a quiet feature scribbled in the margins. But isn’t journaling just as much a part of the story? We think so!

To give journaling the attention it deserves, we switched things up and put it in the spotlight for a change. Our clever artists came up with three breathtaking techniques for spicing up your journaling—the indispensable, storytelling counterpart to any successful layout.

1. Mark It Up
Unknown-14
We all knew the Marvy® Uchida® LePen™ journaling pen was a hero, but this layout takes its powers to new heights. And when you partner this pen with its trusty sidekicks, the ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers, the look becomes a genuine work of art.

Unknown-13
To achieve this artistic look, plan to put as much effort into designing the placement of the words as you do the placement of the photos and papers. Highlight some phrases in bright colors and occasionally change up the font to keep things visually interesting.

Unknown-12
Remember, the most beautiful thing about this kind of journaling is the warmth of your own handwriting! Embrace imperfections and let the markers draw where they may.

2. Say It with Stamps
Unknown copy
Have you ever thought of stamp sentiments as their own form of journaling? Well, they are! So why not try combining the two? Using sentiments along with your regular journaling blocks gives your words an extra punch of color and spunk. It also adds to the hodgepodge look that scrapbooking is all about.Unknown-9
Including stamps in your journaling will also weave it into the flow of the rest of the layout. With this technique, journaling will be an awkward outsider no more and words everywhere will rejoice.

3. Bursts of Blurbs
Unknown-11
Let your journaling float around the page inside bubbles of stamps! Find a stamp set that can accommodate journaling and fill up its stamped images with little blurbs that serve as commentators on your layout. It’s a simple and easy way to add embellishment and journaling all at once.Unknown-10
Journaling is a land that is widely unexplored in the scrapbooking world, so go forth and make some discoveries! Try out one of these techniques and see where the path leads you.

Illustrious Invitations: Inked to Impress

Spring always brings a rush of new joys! It seems that love, weddings, flowers, sunshine, and even babies come pouring into our hearts all at once during this season. It’s a beautiful and welcome renewal after a cold, dormant winter.

With so many beautiful things blossoming all around us, it only makes sense to celebrate. Whether that’s through a bridal shower, a baby shower, a birthday party, a wedding reception, or simply an afternoon of crafting, we believe that everyone has something to celebrate this time of year.

And what’s a celebration without an invitation? Why, a very lonely celebration of course. You know what they say: the invitation sets the tone for the party! So we mined the Seasonal Expressions 2 idea book for invitation stamp sets just right for ringing in spring. Marvel at the jewels we discovered!

C1612 My AcrylixÂŽ Shower Flowers

The flowers in this stamp set are to the Blossom paper packet as sunshine is to blue skies—they were made for each other! Use them in tandem to create an invitation that will have your guests rushing to your party so quickly they’ll blow the blossoms on the trees clean off!

B1478 My AcrylixÂŽ Ice-Cold Summer

The icy sparkles crystallized on these lemon slices look good enough to eat! We love the bright colors and shapes from this stamp set that make the invitation a party in itself. Can you imagine how happy you’d feel if this splash of life arrived in your mailbox?

If making your own invitations feels a little intimidating, just think of it as an alternative form of cardmaking! With one stamp set, you can create a collection of invitations that will make each of your guests feel special and appreciated—a little act of kindness that is well worth your creative efforts.

So open up the windows of your home (and heart) to spring! Let the fragrances, light, and even the occasional rain shower into your life. Breathe it all in. Even if your party is a long way off, today is always worth celebrating!

Seamless Spring Stamping

There’s something unmistakable in the air this time of year. Besides the stuff that tickles the sinuses, the stuff that tickles the artistic soul is in full bloom. When you’re ready to relieve that tickle, pick up your Seasonal Expressions 2 idea book to see the crisp, new spring stamp sets bursting out all over!

One of our favorite flowering sets holds a place in our hearts not just because it’s adorable, but also because it’s incredibly utilitarian. The Botanical Backgrounds stamp set, found on page 16 of Seasonal Expressions 2, is your secret to seamless stamping.

You & I Layout

The springy designs of this set are made to be stamped in succession without any evidence of overlap. Applied to pages and cards, these stamps turn blank cardstock into patterned paper, straight off the press.

Botanical Backgrounds stamp set

How does it work? First, ink your stamp with an Archival Black Exclusive Inks™ pad. Press it to your cardstock, allowing the edges of the stamp to overlap onto your protected surface.

Re-ink your stamp and place it under the first impression, making sure to align the designs. Once you pull away you’ll see how your second stamp took over exactly where the first left off. Cool, no?

Botanical Backgrounds stamp

Continue to stamp your cardstock to your liking, re-inking your stamp with every repetition.

When you’ve finished stamping the pattern outline, pull out your ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ markers to splash some color onto those pretty petals.

Botanical Backgrounds stamp

Ahh, the thrill of spring! To order your own Botanical Backgrounds stamp set, contact your Independent Consultant to get started on your own seasonal sensations.

Or, for a chance to WIN the set, along with other great products we used to make this fabulous layout (a total retail value of $75), head on over to the Canadian Scrapbooker™ blog and leave a comment on our giveaway there.
