DIY Christmas Ornament

If you’re looking to make some personalized ornaments for your Christmas tree this year, you’ve come to the right place! By combining a few photos with the Favor Box Thin Cuts (die), our Oh What Fun papers, and a couple embellishments, we were able to create a memorable (and sturdy!) paper ornament to hang on the tree.

To make a single box ornament:

1. Use your die-cutting machine and cut a base shape out of white cardstock with the Favor Box Thin Cuts.

DIY Paper Christmas Ornament #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhohwhatfun #ohwhatfun #diy #diypaperornament #paperornament #diychristmasornament #papercrafting #diychristmas #chrismtasornament

2. Cut 1¾” squares out of pattern paper to cover the sides of your box. Cut any photos you will be using to the same size. You will need a total of 6 squares, pattern paper and photos.

3. With adhesive, attach loose squares to the sides and bottom of your base before folding it into a box. (Do not attempt to attach the top piece at this time.)

DIY Paper Christmas Ornament #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhohwhatfun #ohwhatfun #diy #diypaperornament #paperornament #diychristmasornament #papercrafting #diychristmas #chrismtasornament

For the top paper, punch holes where the two outer holes are on the base. The easiest way to do this would be to lay the top flap of your base on top of the square pattern paper and punch out the holes.

4. Next, fold your base into a box. The video below will walk you through the process of assembling a favor box, from start to finish. For this ornament tutorial, disregard how the ribbon is attached in the video. We will be doing something a little bit different.

5. With your box folded, we are ready to add the ribbon. Because we will be covering the top of the box with another piece of paper, simply string the ribbon through the two outer holes and ignore the one in the middle.

DIY Paper Christmas Ornament #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhohwhatfun #ohwhatfun #diy #diypaperornament #paperornament #diychristmasornament #papercrafting #diychristmas #chrismtasornament

6. Once the ribbon is in, add the top paper to your box.

DIY Paper Christmas Ornament #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhohwhatfun #ohwhatfun #diy #diypaperornament #paperornament #diychristmasornament #papercrafting #diychristmas #chrismtasornament

Tie a knot at the top of your ribbon and you’re all done!

A single box makes a wonderful ornament on its own, but you can double your fun by stringing two boxes together! To make a double box ornament, follow all the steps above to assemble your bottom box, but before tying the ribbon together, you’ll want to assemble a second box, this time punching holes on the bottom flap of the base, too.

DIY Paper Christmas Ornament #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhohwhatfun #ohwhatfun #diy #diypaperornament #paperornament #diychristmasornament #papercrafting #diychristmas #chrismtasornament

The easiest way to do this is to punch the holes out before folding the base to the box shape. With the holes punched, fold your box up. Before closing the top, take the ribbon from your first box and string it through the holes you punched at the bottom of your second box and tie the ribbon inside. Finish the ornament top the same way as described in steps 5 and 6 above.

These ornaments are the perfect way to get crafty this season with the kids, grandkids, and friends! With the right photos and embellishments, these could quite possibly become a holiday favorite!

Treat Yourself to a Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience!

There are as many different approaches to memory keeping as there are memory keepers. We celebrate every approach and believe that whatever approach gets your stories told and your memories preserved is the best! For some that means pictures and pocket cards tucked into an Everyday Life™ album; for others it means putting together a pre-cut Cut Above® layout; for others, memory keeping also doubles as an artistic outlet incorporating different crafting techniques on a 12″ x 12″ paper canvas. Deluxe scrapbooking workshops provide this kind of creative experience for anyone who wants to add a little more “oomph” to the pages of their scrapbook.

Our Holiday Expressions idea book introduced the first two deluxe scrapbooking workshops, which featured the Boutique and ‘Tis the Season collection. Earlier this month we released a third workshop featuring the Hello Pumpkin papers used in decidedly non-Halloween artwork. Here, see for yourself:

A Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHHelloPumpkin #HelloPumpkin #scrapbooking #scrapbookingworkshop #papercraftingtechnique #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ThinCuts #diecuts

As you can see, this workshop guides you in the creation of two 2-page scrapbook layouts and two single-page scrapbook layouts, all in the 12″ x 12″ size. Each layout is made using a few papercrafting techniques, such as folding, angled cuts, and creative use of Thin Cuts dies to achieve unique effects. Take this scrapbook page, for example:

A Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHHelloPumpkin #HelloPumpkin #scrapbooking #scrapbookingworkshop #papercraftingtechnique #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ThinCuts #diecuts

There’s a lot happening on this page, but we’d like to draw your attention primarily to the circle and heart right in the center of the page. Here’s a quick look at the technique that went into creating this accent.

A Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHHelloPumpkin #HelloPumpkin #scrapbooking #scrapbookingworkshop #papercraftingtechnique #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ThinCuts #diecut #cuttlebug

Starting with a 2¾” square of Peach cardstock, we used the 2¼” stitched circle die to cut only half of a circle. The trick to only cutting half of a shape is all about how you feed the die through your machine. As you can see in the photo above, only part of the circle is sandwiched between the plates, resulting in a partial cut like this:

Thanks to our beautiful two-toned cardstock, when you fold back the cut part, you get a lightly contrasting color. We then layered this piece over a piece of Ballerina cardstock to add another shade and topped it off with the adorable heart sticker. Neat, right? And that technique is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to our deluxe scrapbooking. Take a closer look at the other layouts you’ll make as part of this workshop:

A Deluxe Scrapbooking Experience #CTMH #CloseToMyHeart #CTMHHelloPumpkin #HelloPumpkin #scrapbooking #scrapbookingworkshop #papercraftingtechnique #scrapbook #memorykeeping #ThinCuts #diecutshello-layoutmoments-layout

The helpful instructions that accompany the workshop show you how to replicate each technique, guiding you step-by-step through the creative process. If you’d like to try something new for your memory keeping, we invite you to check out the Hello Pumpkin Deluxe Scrapbooking Workshop, and see what deluxe scrapbooking is all about!

Halloween Slime Kits with Shaker Window!

We are so excited to have the talented Amy Robison as a guest blogger today! Not only is she a contributing artist for Silhouette, but is also somewhat of an expert at designing children’s themed parties, gifts, and crafts. Don’t take our word for it, see for yourself!

Halloween Slime Party #ctmh #closetomyheart #shakerwindow #ThinCuts #Halloween #HelloPumpkin #shakercard #diy #kidsparty #kidshalloween

Hey! Amy Robison here! I’m so excited to share a fun party I created this week with the Shaker Windows & Confetti Thin Cuts, loose sequins, and Hello Pumpkin collection. If you follow me on Instagram stories then you already know that I am obsessed with the shaker windows after trying them out this week. I want to use them on everything! I already have a million ideas for Christmas. I’m getting a little ahead of myself, so I’ll calm down and focus on the party I’m sharing today— a slime making party. If you’re like me, then you hate this slime craze that has been going on for a few years. (It’s the worst!) Who started this? haha! My kids still love it though, so I decided that I just have to embrace it occasionally. Plus, how perfect is it for a Halloween party?

Halloween Slime Party #ctmh #closetomyheart #shakerwindow #ThinCuts #Halloween #HelloPumpkin #shakercard #diy #kidsparty #kidshalloween

I started out by designing a few characters I could use with the shaker windows that would be festive for the holiday. I’m loving their simplicity and how they turned out. Once they were all designed, I added the shaker windows to each one. If you haven’t used the shaker windows before, I included a simple tutorial. They are a piece of cake and you’ll absolutely love them!

Shake Window Tutorial

Halloween Slime Party #ctmh #closetomyheart #shakerwindow #ThinCuts #Halloween #HelloPumpkin #shakercard #diy #kidsparty #kidshalloween

Step 1: Remove the outer foam ring leaving the middle square foam adhesive to use for other projects. (Such a genius design so all that empty space isn’t wasted.)

Step 2: Place the foam shaker window ring on your project. It is very sticky, so you know it will stay right where you put it!

Step 3: Fill with sequins, glitter, sprinkles or any other fun media. This loose sequins mix is so beautiful! I can’t get enough of it, and it’s available in gold too!

Halloween Slime Party #ctmh #closetomyheart #shakerwindow #ThinCuts #Halloween #HelloPumpkin #shakercard #diy #kidsparty #kidshalloween

Step 4: Remove the protective paper on the ring to reveal the adhesive.

Step 5: Peel the protective film off of the acetate circle. Use washy tape to help peel it off. This was a little tip I learned from the Close to my Heart creative team. Such a huge help!

Step 6: Place the acetate sheet on top. Press down to make sure everything is sealed in place.

Halloween Slime Party #ctmh #closetomyheart #shakerwindow #ThinCuts #Halloween #HelloPumpkin #shakercard #diy #kidsparty #kidshalloween

Step 7: Using the Shaker Window Thin Cuts, cut out the finishing border in your choice of coordinating paper.

Step 8: Glue the border on top to finish.

Step 9: I taped a sucker stick to the back so that I could place them in my kits. These would be cute in gift baskets, too, as a tag to the recipient.

Halloween Slime Party #ctmh #closetomyheart #shakerwindow #ThinCuts #Halloween #HelloPumpkin #shakercard #diy #kidsparty #kidshalloween

Once I finished all the shaker window characters, I gathered the supplies for the slime kits. I used the Hello Pumpkin collection to wrap and embellish the supplies and containers to make them look more cohesive and “pretty” everything up a bit.

Halloween Slime Party #ctmh #closetomyheart #shakerwindow #ThinCuts #Halloween #HelloPumpkin #shakercard #diy #kidsparty #kidshalloween

Each kit has everything needed to make slime including fun sequins to mix inside to make it extra special. I love making each guest feel important and special. My guests are usually small children and I love the look on their faces when they see what is waiting on the table just for them. It’s the best and keeps me doing all these crazy parties.

Have you used the shaker windows before? Hopefully I have sparked some ideas of fun new ways you can use them in your next project.

Thank you Amy for all of your creative ideas! Please show our new friend some love in the comments below!

Creating Interactive Cards with Thin Cuts!

Let’s get crafty and use those Thin Cuts we’ve been talking about all month long on some fun interactive cards!

Today we are going to walk through making this astronaut in orbit card, since it is the harder of the two to make. Once you’ve got that one down, making others like it will be a breeze!

Materials Needed:
Z4157 Stargazer Cardmaking Stamp + Thin Cuts
Z4006 Monstrous Halloween Stamp + Thin Cuts
X7229B Stargazer Paper Packet
1385 White Daisy Cardstock
Z3271 Archival Black Exclusive Inks™ Stamp Pad
Z2863 White Daisy Exclusive Inks™ Stamp Pad
Z2807 Willow Exclusive Inks™ Stamp Pad
Z4143 Stargazer Dots
Z3132 Watercolor Paints
Z3177 Paintbrush Set
Z3318 Thin Cuts—Basic Circles
Z2068 Ranger™ White Super Fine Embossing Powder
Z555 Craft Heater
Z2446 ShinHan™ Touch Twin™ Black Marker
Z2060 Thin 3-D Foam Tape
Z3342 Foam Dots
Die-cutting Machine
Washi Tape
Penny or Small Flat Button

Prepare and Cut.

To replicate our card exactly, you will need the following pieces:

  • 1 standard card base
  • 4″ x 5¼” Pacifica planets paper (Stargazer paper packet)
  • 4″ x ¼” Poppy striped paper (Stargazer paper packet)
  • Trimmed zip strips to use as accents (Stargazer paper packet)
  • Astronaut die cut from White Daisy cardstock, stamped with Archival Black ink, painted in watercolor (Stargazer Thin Cuts)
  • Aliens/monsters die cut from White Daisy cardstock, stamped with Willow ink, pupils colored over with black marker (Monstrous Halloween Thin Cuts)
Step 1. Cutting the circle.Making Interactive Cards #ctmh #closetomyheart #astroboy #astronaut #boy #space #stargazer #star #moon #aliens #diy #cards #interactive #moving #parts #birthday #mission #control

Place the 2½” circle die (the largest one in the set) ¾” from the top of the planets paper and centered, left to right. Attach it with washi tape to keep it in place as you run it through your die-cutting machine.

Step 2. Cutting the moon.

Once you’ve cut your first circle, use the inside circle to make the moon.

Making Interactive Cards #ctmh #closetomyheart #astroboy #astronaut #boy #space #stargazer #star #moon #aliens #diy #cards #interactive #moving #parts #birthday #mission #control

Flip the 2½” circle you just cut out over, to the side of the paper that looks like the surface of the moon. Attach the 2″ circle die to it with washi tape and run it through your die-cutting machine.

Step 3. Attaching the planets paper.

Making Interactive Cards #ctmh #closetomyheart #astroboy #astronaut #boy #space #stargazer #star #moon #aliens #diy #cards #interactive #moving #parts #birthday #mission #control

On the backside of your paper, add thin 3-D foam tape as shown here. You will need a small piece of foam tape near the circle to allow the movement later but make sure it isn’t too close to the circle or it will not work! Attach this piece to your card front.

Step 4. Adding the penny.

Making Interactive Cards #ctmh #closetomyheart #astroboy #astronaut #boy #space #stargazer #star #moon #aliens #diy #cards #interactive #moving #parts #birthday #mission #control

This step is pretty simple but also requires accuracy. With your card resting on a flat surface, gently tuck your penny (or flat button) behind the planets paper about half way. Be careful to not bump your card, the penny is not attached to anything at this point.

Step 5. Prepping the moon.

With your penny in place, it’s time to prepare the moon for attaching.

Making Interactive Cards #ctmh #closetomyheart #astroboy #astronaut #boy #space #stargazer #star #moon #aliens #diy #cards #interactive #moving #parts #birthday #mission #control

Flip your moon over to the planets side of the paper and add thin 3-D foam tape to the center only and attach it to the card. Don’t move the penny.

Step 6. Attaching the astronaut.

Remember our floating penny? Carefully attach a small foam dot to the center of it, between the two papers. Remove the adhesive from the top and attach the astronaut you’ve previously prepared.

Step 7. Embellish!

Add your sentiment, aliens, and all other embellishments to your card to finish it off!

With Thin Cuts dies on our minds all month long, let’s talk about two of our new comers from the Seasonal Expressions 1 catalog, the Party and Title Banners!

These new die sets are designed to cut the banner shapes you see here as well as score (without cutting!) where the dotted lines are for effortless and accurate folding. Adding a touch of three-dimensional flair to your cards and layouts just got easier!

Use the Party banners to create personalized headings and signs to commemorate any occasion. Take a look at how we incorporated them into these scrapbook pages, one with the straight banner and another with the curved one.

Just like the Party Banners, our Title Banners fold up for a dimensional look, too. With these banners, however, you can also layer multiple segments together to create a longer banner—sized to fit any personalized message!

Block Alphabet Thin Cuts Technique

Block Alphabet Thin Cuts Technique #ctmh #closetomyheart #block #alpha #alphabet #abc #thincuts #thin #cuts #die #diecuts #letters #card #diy #sentiment #hug #gimmesomesugar #give #me #some #sugar #pink #pastel #floral #girly #girl #sparkles #cricut #cuttlebug #fussycutting #technique #bashful #whimsy #fundamental #cardstock #washi #tape

Our Die-namite! sale is in full swing, so why not share yet another way to use our Thin Cuts!

For those of you stumbling across our blog for the first time, Thin Cuts are our special line of metal dies that you can use to cut paper shapes by running them through a die-cutting machine, like the Cricut Cuttlebug™. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and some even coordinate with specific stamp sets. You can create exact shapes, over and over again, without using scissors! And the only thing better than that is that they are on sale through the end of the month at 25% off individual sets and 30% off select bundles! (For a complete list of our Thin Cuts, click here.)

Now let’s talk about that super cute card sending everyone out there HUGS. We made the card above using our Block Alphabet Thin Cuts and a partial die-cutting technique. The step-by-step instructions below will guide you through the process of re-creating this card, or one like it with a sentiment of your choice!

Materials Needed:
X7228B Gimme Some Sugar Paper Packet
Z3350 Whimsy Fundamentals
X5941 Bashful Cardstock
1385 White Daisy Cardstock
Z3386 Thin Cuts—Block Alphabet
Z3274 Clear Sparkles
Z1263 Bitty Sparkles
Z4014 White & Gold Twine
Z3372 Adhesive Runner
Washi Tape
Die-cutting Machine

Prepare and Cut.

To replicate our card exactly, you will need the following pieces:

  • 1 standard card base
  • 2″ x 4¼” White Daisy cardstock
  • 2¾” x 4¼” light Bashful cardstock (our cardstock is 2-toned and we used the light side for this piece)
  • 3½” x 4¼” Bashful cardstock
  • 4¼” x 4¼” white flowers on Pixie paper from Gimme Some Sugar paper packet

Step 1. Planning your letter placement.

Block Alphabet Thin Cuts Technique #ctmh #closetomyheart #block #alpha #alphabet #abc #thincuts #thin #cuts #die #diecuts #letters #card #diy #sentiment #hug #gimmesomesugar #give #me #some #sugar #pink #pastel #floral #girly #girl #sparkles #cricut #cuttlebug #fussycutting #technique #bashful #whimsy #fundamental #cardstock #washi #tape

With a pencil, lightly draw a line 1″ from the right edge on all four cardstock pieces.

Step 2. Attaching the alphabet Thin Cuts.
Block Alphabet Thin Cuts Technique #ctmh #closetomyheart #block #alpha #alphabet #abc #thincuts #thin #cuts #die #diecuts #letters #card #diy #sentiment #hug #gimmesomesugar #give #me #some #sugar #pink #pastel #floral #girly #girl #sparkles #cricut #cuttlebug #fussycutting #technique #bashful #whimsy #fundamental #cardstock #washi #tape

Again, with a pencil, lightly mark 1 3/8″ from the top of the cardstock. Align the top of the alphabet Thin Cuts with this mark and the left edge slightly over the line you drew in step 1. You should be able to see the pencil line on the inner edge of the die. Once your dies are aligned, secure them with washi tape.

Tip: make sure your letters are in the correct order. The first letter should be on the shortest paper and the last letter on the longest.

Step 3. Partially cutting the letters.
Block Alphabet Thin Cuts Technique #ctmh #closetomyheart #block #alpha #alphabet #abc #thincuts #thin #cuts #die #diecuts #letters #card #diy #sentiment #hug #gimmesomesugar #give #me #some #sugar #pink #pastel #floral #girly #girl #sparkles #cricut #cuttlebug #fussycutting #technique #bashful #whimsy #fundamental #cardstock #washi #tape

As our preferred die-cutting machine, we used a Cricut Cuttlebug™ for this step. If your machine is something different, adjust as needed.

Layer a platform and a C-size plate and align the edges. Place the White Daisy cardstock on top of this combination so that the line you have drawn is about 1/8″ below the bottom of the plate. This will put the right half of the cardstock on the plate and leave the left half of the cardstock hanging off the plate. Adhere the piece in place with washi tape so it will not move when it’s run through the die-cutting machine. Anything below the plate will not cut through.

Layer a B-size plate on top and run the paper through your die-cutting machine. You should end up with a partially cut letter, still attached on the left.

Repeat this step with all of your letters.

Step 4. Trim off the excess.
Block Alphabet Thin Cuts Technique #ctmh #closetomyheart #block #alpha #alphabet #abc #thincuts #thin #cuts #die #diecuts #letters #card #diy #sentiment #hug #gimmesomesugar #give #me #some #sugar #pink #pastel #floral #girly #girl #sparkles #cricut #cuttlebug #fussycutting #technique #bashful #whimsy #fundamental #cardstock #washi #tape

To get a clean, straight edge, trim along the pencil line with a paper trimmer. DO NOT CUT ALL THE WAY THROUGH! Leave the part of the letters that are supposed to be attached uncut.

Tip: for the center line of the S, trim with scissors.

Step 5. Assemble your card!

Block Alphabet Thin Cuts Technique #ctmh #closetomyheart #block #alpha #alphabet #abc #thincuts #thin #cuts #die #diecuts #letters #card #diy #sentiment #hug #gimmesomesugar #give #me #some #sugar #pink #pastel #floral #girly #girl #sparkles #cricut #cuttlebug #fussycutting #technique #bashful #whimsy #fundamental #cardstock #washi #tape

Erase any remaining pencil lines and build your card. Attach your letters to the white flower Pixie paper starting one inch from the left with the S on the bottom, followed by the G, then U, and then the H.

Tip: embellish with twine before attaching this front to the card base.

That’s all, folks! Use this technique to make a standard-sized card with any custom sentiment, anything between 4 to 6 letters long, using our Block Alphabet Thin Cuts!

Even though we knew it was coming, as it does every year, spring is sneaking up on us fast! Technically it won’t be spring for another couple weeks, so there’s still time to pull out and sort through all of those brightly colored decorations. (Phew!)

And because spring is all about new beginnings, we have a few fun things in store for you to add to your stash! Just keep reading! 😉

First, we want to show you how to dress up a wreath you may already have with a fun pennant banner made using our Block Alphabet Thin Cuts dies (which are 25% off through the end of the month as part of our Die-namite! sale).

If you look closely, you’ll see that we layered each of our letters with silver foil. Using our Thin Cuts, we cut our sentiment out twice, once out of White Daisy cardstock and then again out of silver foil paper. The silver foil letters were cut in half and then attached to the White Daisy using an adhesive runner. Then, we attached the letters with thin 3-D foam tape onto individual pennants that would later form our banner. To make the pennants, we simply cut 1½” x 3¾” rectangles and dovetailed one of the ends.

Attach the pennants to white twine using a hot glue gun to spell out your words—one word per strand of twine. Make sure to leave enough twine on the ends to tie the banners to the wreath.

You can make a banner like this one for pretty much any occasion just by changing the sentiment. From welcoming a new season, to holidays, or birthdays—the Block Alphabet Thin Cuts give you the tools for spelling out whatever it is you want to celebrate in style!

And since we are talking seasonal décor, we have a special treat for those of you who’ve made it this far: two FREE printables for the upcoming Easter season.

Stacking Die-cuts In Your Favor

Thin Cuts come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Stars, hearts, circles, flowers, ovals, banners, tags, numbers, letters—just to name a few 😉 . Our goal this month is to remind you just how handy these tools can be in creating beautiful artwork that is versatile and, dare we say it—Die-namite!

All of our basic shapes Thin Cuts come in a set of four dies ranging in size, from 1″ to 2½”. In the page above we used our Basic Stars Thin Cuts to create something that literally pops off the page.

First we attached the largest stars to the page. You can use glue dots, thin 3-D foam tape, or both—which is what we did. Add the adhesive only to the center of the shape to keep it from going completely flat.

The smaller stars were stacked on top and then attached with a mini staple—not only functioning as an adhesive but as an added design element. You’ll notice that we only used three out of the four star sizes per stack. We found that doing more than three looked too bulky and didn’t visually work with our page. (If you remember from one of our previous posts, details in odd numbers look better than even!) Lastly, using nothing more than a finger, we lifted the corners up starting with the top layer.

Replicate this user-friendly technique with any of our basic shape Thin Cuts. If you want to achieve a similar effect with a Thin Cut that doesn’t come in a variety of sizes, follow the same steps and stack the same sized shapes on top of each other.

Using our basic banner Thin Cuts, we were able to create the incredibly fun page you see above. It came together quickly and easily, no fussy cutting required!

With Thin Cuts, you can see where to place the die on your photo to make sure you cut the shape exactly how you want it. The die is an outline of the shape it will cut. There’s no wondering if you’re going to accidentally trim someone or something important out of your photo. Place the die on your photo, check to make sure your subject displays how you want it to, and run the die and photo through your die-cutting machine to get a perfectly shaped photo.

This also lets you make sure you choose the right size shape for your photo. Basic shape Thin Cuts come in shapes like hearts, stars, circles, or ovals in four different sizes for a variety of options.

Here’s another darling example, this time using the basic hearts Thin Cuts. Using Thin Cuts on your photos is a simple, creative way to add visual interest to your layout. It’s fun to break out of the rectangle or square mold to give the photos you love a new look.

From scrapbook pages and cards to wall hangings and any other papercraft you can imagine up—the possibilities are endless when using Thin Cuts!

And if that’s not incentive enough, our Thin Cuts are on sale this month! Save 25% on individual sets of Thin Cuts, including some that we have brought out of retirement specifically for this sale, and 30% on select bundles! Check this Die-namite sale out, here.
