We updated the color wheel we shared with you last year to include this year’s new colors from our exclusive color palette!

Since we’re celebrating relationships today, we thought it would be fun (and practical) to talk about relationships between colors and what makes certain pairings work. We’ve summarized color theory principles from previous blog posts and compiled them, below, to have them conveniently available for review all in one place.

Once you’ve chosen basic colors using any one of these combination options, jump on the Close To My Heart color wheel and take your pick from the exclusive colors that fall into each category. If you’d like to learn more about any of the individual principles or would like to see more artwork examples, click on the provided links at the end of each section. Lastly, if you don’t have the time or would simply rather not read through color theory (we get it 😉 ), skip to the end of this post to see how we make using a full spectrum of color even easier!

Monochromatic and Analogous Colors:

Color Theory #ctmh #closetomyheart #monochromatic #analogous #color #colour #wheel #bashful #pixie #blossom #raspberry #combination #coordinating #coordinate #coordination #theory #pink #shades #variant #variation #pretty #prettyinpink #girl #girly #butterfly #heart #gold #accent #embellishment #complement #pearl

Monochromatic color designs make use of a single color that varies in lightness and saturation. Sometimes, a piece of artwork that we may think is monochromatic is actually following an analogous scheme, which is just a fancy way of saying that the featured colors are next to each other on the color wheel. One color is typically dominant while neighboring colors are used to enhance the design. (Monochromatic and Analogous Colors)

Complementary Colors:

Complementary colors are two colors opposite each other on the color wheel, such as Candy Apple and Clover (red and green), and Goldrush and Bluebird (orange and blue). If you notice, one side of the color wheel is made up of warm colors while the other is made up of cool colors. Complementary colors, since they are across from one another, will have one of each. They create a vibrant contrast, making each other pop without being jarring to the eye. (Complementary Colors and How to Use Them)

Split-Complementary Colors:

Split-complementary colors are pretty much what the name implies. When you are using two complementary colors, split one of them into its two adjacent colors on the wheel to end up with three colors that will visually work. Take red-orange and blue-green, for example. They are opposite each other on the color wheel and therefore complementary. Add a third color using the split-complementary scheme by splitting red-orange into two and use red and orange with the blue-green instead. (Using Split-complementary Colors)

Triadic Colors:

A triadic color scheme is a lot easier to understand than it may sound. Just like some of the other theories, triadic color combinations make use of three colors. This time, instead of being next to or opposite each other, triadic colors are three colors that are equally spaced around the color wheel, and when connected by lines create an equal sided triangle.Triadic Color Combinations #ctmh #closetomyheart #ctmhstargazer #stargazer #star #gazer #colortheory #color #theory #redyelloblue #red #yellow #blue #canary #cranberry #sapphire #scheme #combination #vivacious #bright #harmony #harmonious #balance #balanced

There are only four triadic color combinations on your basic color wheel:

  1. Red, Yellow, Blue
  2. Red-orange, Yellow-green, Blue-violet
  3. Orange, Green, Violet
  4. Yellow-orange, Blue-green, Red-violet.

(Triadic Color Combinations)

Double Complementary Colors:

In a double complementary scheme, we use a combination of four colors that, as the name implies, is made up of two complementary color pairs. (Remember, two colors are complementary if they are opposite each other on the color wheel.) To make it even easier, this kind of color combination is also known as rectangular colors because, when the four colors are connected on the color wheel, they form a rectangle. (Double Complementary Color Schemes)

After reading, reviewing, and applying these color principles it’s easy to see that making harmonious color combinations isn’t so hard. Keep that trusty color wheel close by and pick your colors with confidence!

We also know that color theory isn’t for everyone. If you fall into this category or would like to see pages and pages of artwork examples that we’ve come up with using these principles, then Love of Color is for you.

In it, breathtaking artwork illustrates how to create beautiful and perfectly balanced color combinations without any guesswork. Each spread in this book starts out with one exclusive color that is then combined with two, three, and four other exclusive colors, shown in beautifully crafted inspirational artwork.

This layout was created using one of the three Smoothie color combination options offered in Love of Color. In this example, Smoothie was paired with Ballerina, Eggplant, New England Ivy, and Heather. Smoothie is the dominant color and the others were used to create accents throughout.

Thank you for being our Valentine today and joining us through this celebration of color! We hope that you are always living your life in full color and that you are moved to do something creative today!

Sweet and Simple Class Valentines

In less than two weeks, our children will be off to school to swap valentines with their friends. As the crafty moms of these precocious little people, we immediately volunteer to make these sentiments of affection ourselves because, why not? And then you find out from your child’s teacher that he has 25 friends in his class. No problem, you’ve got this! DIY valentines don’t have to be complicated to be cute or clever.

Here are two ideas for quick and simple school valentines you can make yourself that your child will be happy to share:

School kids love new pencils—it’s a thing. There’s something special, a sense of pride even, when a child gets to use a pretty new pencil to do their schoolwork.

Embellish your pencils with a flag made from some of your pretty paper and, presto! All that’s left is for your child to sign the back of it.

If you’re set on a sweet valentine, pick your treat and add a tag.

Simple and Sweet School Valentines #ctmh #closetomyheart #simple #easy #school #valentine #day #pencils #hearts #flags #xo #tags #bee #mine #together #short #sweet

To make life easier, we used our Basic Tags Thin Cuts for this one. A few simple layers or a cute stamped sentiment will finish the job!

Celebrating Valentine’s Day is about sharing your affection for the people you care about, not about how long it took you to make their treat. As you prepare to make it a special day, keep your child’s class treats simple—simple enough for them to help with! They will enjoy being part of the process and you will be making memories worth a lifetime!

XOXO

A Fun Way to “Spruce” Up Your Valentine’s Day Décor

As a crafter, you’re always looking for new projects and new ideas. With Valentine’s Day coming up, here’s one we’ve fallen head over heels for: a heart tree!Learn how to make this adorable heart tree for Valentine's Day! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #Valentines #decor #hearts

This would make a great accent piece for your living room, and if you made a few, you could make a really cute mantle display or centerpiece arrangement. These trees are super easy and affordable to make, especially since we’re going to show you how! We’ll even include some insider’s tips.

First, you’ll need to get a styrofoam tree (or trees!) and a bunch of ½” straight pins, which you can get from almost any craft store. Next, put your Cricut® to work cutting out hearts—a lot of them! ☺ We cut these hearts at 1 ½”. 2 sheets each of 4 colors of paper should be plenty to cover one tree.

Insider’s tip #1: You’ll want to turn the pressure up pretty high on your Cricut® machine when you cut the glitter paper.Learn how to make this adorable heart tree for Valentine's Day! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #Valentines #decor #hearts

After you’ve cut all your hearts, flip your first heart upside down. Using a straight pin, attach the heart to the bottom of the tree: The curved part of the heart should be in line with the bottom of the tree, and the pin should be placed near the point of the heart. Continue this technique to create a row of hearts on the bottom of the tree. Let the hearts overlap slightly. Next, add another row just above your first. Focus on filling the gaps between the hearts and covering the pinheads from the first row. You can either make each row its own color or alternate colors within rows—it’s totally up to you! When you get to the top of the tree, glue the tips of the hearts together to create a point.

Insider’s tip #2: If you plan on saving your tree to use year after year, use styrofoam glue instead of or in addition to the straight pins. The tree may take longer to finish, but it will be less delicate.

And that’s it—we told you it was easy! 🙂 Now you’re ready to welcome this holiday of caring and sharing into your home and heart, and with that . . .

Insider’s tip #3: Love what you’ve created!

You’ll Love This Valentine’s Day Advent Calendar!

The timeless love sonnet by Elizabeth Barrett Browning has inspired countless thousands of people to “count the ways” they love one another for over a century now. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we’ve come up with an irresistibly cute project to help you count the days! Take a look:Create this fun Valentine's Day Advent Calendar! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #Valentines #calendar #countdown #Vday #ValentinesDay

Didn’t we tell you it was the cutest? 🙂 And it’s amazingly simple, too. Starting with our Designed Décor Red Magnetic Chalkboard, we added a big heart cut from the Charlotte paper packet. Next, we cut 14 adorable envelopes from a variety of cardstocks and glitter papers with our Cricut® Artiste collection. Have a look:Create this fun Valentine's Day Advent Calendar! #CloseToMyHeart #ctmh #Valentines #calendar #countdown #Vday #ValentinesDay

After cutting them out, you’ll need to fold your envelopes. Use a bone folder to get deep creases so the flaps will stay in place—no adhesive required! Then attach a set of hook & loop dots to each envelope. These Velcro-like dots make opening and closing the envelopes a cinch!

Now for the fun part: decorating and filling the envelopes! We attached a heart to every envelope and attached a number on top. Feel free to embellish your envelopes to your “heart’s” content!

What will you put in your envelopes? A note with something you love about your significant other? A little piece of candy? A picture of a favorite memory? An act of love you’d like to complete that day? Whatever you choose, it’ll get you and everyone else at your house even more excited for the big day!

Make your own heart-filled advent calendar, so you can count the ways AND the days this Valentine’s!

(Paper) Heart Attack!

We’ve definitely caught the love bug here at the corporate office, but can you blame us? First of all, the weather here in Utah has been absolutely beautiful, with sunny skies and warm breezes almost every day this month! Second, Valentine’s Day, the day devoted purely to celebrating hearts (something we’re very fond of at this company), is less than a day away.

Our hearts are especially full this season with love for our dear Consultants, the lifeblood of our company, so we decided to channel this affectionate energy into a little project from the heart. We revved up our Cricut® machines and got to cutting oodles of hearts from some of our favorite papers. Then we crafted a banner, made a card, picked up some balloons, grabbed our Lagoon hearts washi tape, and hit the road for a little field trip to a special someone’s house: Presidential Director Michelle Brooks. We had so much fun sneaking around her lawn, planting hearts, and then hiding behind her house to wait for her to arrive home. When Michelle pulled into the driveway, she sat in her car for a while, just staring in disbelief at the field of hearts littering her lawn. Finally, she got out, and we ran from our hiding spots to greet her!Her adorable daughter arrived home from preschool shortly after on a bus that had a cute heart decoration of its own. It was so special to have both her and Michelle’s husband, Greg, included in the celebration.
If all of our dreams came true, we would heart attack every last one of you! But since that will always only be a crazy dream of ours, we’re asking each of you to be our hands to spread the love on our behalf. So if you’ve been looking for a way to show your love like we were, try heart attacking someone! (Just make sure you do it with paper.) Showing love with paper hearts is something that’s always in season. Plus, it’s a foolproof method for boosting happiness. It’s so easy—all you need is love! And a little paper, of course. But aren’t they kind of the same thing? 😉Happy Valentine’s Day! XOXO
